Saturday Back Talk

Listener survey comments I read on the show this week are posted below. If you are a listener to the show and haven't taken the survey, please do so by scrolling down and clicking through on the right. Thanks!

Topeka, KS (XM)
You are often an ass. Today was a good example as you discussed Janet Napolitano's sexuality. I turned the station because you completely failed to acknowledge that prominent women deal with the lesbian label in a way single prominent men do not and have to contend with constant rumors and direct questions about their sexuality. Often when callers disagree with you, you fail to accept their perspectives and spin the analysis as though the caller comes around to your way of thinking...because of course you are always right. Your affect is also annoying. All this said, I listen as long as I can stomach you on my long commute, because you are gay and I want to support gays and lesbians.

Queens, NY (Sirius)
Michelangelo - I love that you are balanced and thoughtful in your discussions - even when you have a strong opinion. Your show is very easy to listen to, and the news coverage (both in your show and at the hour) is different than can be found anywhere else.

Evanston, IL (Sirius)
Love your show, but you have the most self-indulgent show introduction I've ever heard. It's kind of annoying.

Vancouver, BC Canada (XM)
You guys have put together a cracker of a show! I wish we had someone like you to do what you do in the great white north!!

Glendale, AZ (XM)
I like listening to the interviews. Michelangelo asks the guest thoughtful questions and treats them with respect. Hey, straights listen to the show too.

New York, NY (Sirius)

I love this show although I have to turn it off when I get scared. I applaud Michelangelo's courage to keep going, when I can't take it anymore.

Loyalton, CA (Sirius)

I am a single mother by choice of a 6 year old boy of mixed ethnicity. I choose not to have a television in my house so he doesn't get the mainstream media messages of homophobia or ethnocentrism. We listen to Michelangelo in the car on weekend trips into town for groceries, and he always has stuff to offer. (We had a wonderful conversation Saturday about Stu, the mayor, and his manner of dress before a group of children.) :) I listen to Jon Stewart via the web when he has episodes posted, and i listen to Rachel Maddow. I listen to you in order to help me digest and think about different issues. I live in the middle of a very conservative religious area in NE California mountains, and am starting a PFLAG chapter...wish me luck!

Meridian, CT (XM)
I do appreciate knowing when the show is a taped version, I would love to call in but then realize,," oh this isn't live". Hearing the taped show is good..it gives me a chance to re listen..and some times I hear some thing I missed.

Edmonton, AB Canada (XM)

I like your show BUT I find you ramble on and on and on about the subject till I get exasperated, then I change the channel. I LOVE how you interact with your callers ssooo polite it's wonderful. Don't take so much time off. This week I got to listen to 4 days of reruns. Sorry, that is tooo much.

Lexington, KY (XM)
Michelangelo! Listening to your insightful and entertaining commentary is a highlight of my day. I've been outraged more often lately as you've pointed out instances of myopic, racist, paranoid fear mongering taking place at town hall meetings- case in point, that awful woman who yelled out "Heil Hitler!' to a Jewish man as he was being interviewed in Las Vegas. It was all I could do to restrain myself from calling every Papa John's in the Vegas area to deliver twenty pizzas to her house, but instead took to facebook, where there are loads of other people who are just as outraged by this woman. People like her deserve to be called out by name, and forced to justify their actions instead of settling comfortably back into the mob- good for you for not letting her off the hook!

Los Angeles, CA (Sirius)
More issues related to the African-American Gay community. It would be nice to hear topics specific to African-American Gays. To often your topics relating to these issues are more related to how they may affect the White Gay community or the Gay community as a whole.

Topeka, KS (Sirius)
Great show. I'd rather hear M report and give opinion about the news than any other news reporting entity. I most appreciate the fact that there is no hiding the political orientation--no extremists claiming to be moderates, etc. I appreciate the fairness and the criticism for all sides, no matter if M is aligned with them usually or not.

Wilton Manors, FL (Sirius)
When you talk, please get to the point quicker. You sometimes seem to repeat the same points over and over before you get to the point of your discussion. I can't tell if you do it as time filler or just can't gather your words so you circle like a plane waiting to land at O'Hare airport.

Lakeland, FL (Sirius)
Just love you Mike, if not for you, the kool-aid man would get me through my ears.

Harrisonburg, VA (Sirius)
I like it best when you focus on issues of relevance to the LGBTQ community, and least when you spend a lot of time on issues that have nothing to do with our community (like the renaming of the Sears building - what a waste of time!) I live in a city where there's very little gay life - a small community here and I'm starving for news analysis related to our issues I subscribed to Sirius SOLELY so I could have access to OutQ radio - and specifically so I could hear YOU. I get substantive information about my community and your brilliant analysis - when you stay focused on issues relevant to our community.

Coventry, RI (Sirius)
I can only say good things about you and your show. You keep us all informed with what's happening in the GLBT community, which is more than i can say for almost any news station out there. Listening to your show has really helped in motivating me to get out there and actively fight for our rights as human beings. I live in Rhode Island and I have made my voice heard for gay marriage to be legalized in the only state in New England that doesn't recognize it, thanks to you. Love you, Love your show! Just do what you do.

Naim, which helped pave the way to freedom to marry inter racially.

R.I.P. Ted Kennedy

Senator Kennedy inspired us to think big, to live up to this country's ideals and to fight for equality every day. He was a man of enormous wealth and privilege who decided to dedicate his life to fighting for others, using his name, intellect and his talents in order to serve the public.

He battled the right-wing vigorously during the 80s in trying to get funding for AIDS/HIV research and basic care, in the face of a negligent government in the grip of religious extremists. He championed LGBT civil rights early on, and whether it was hate crimes laws or marriage, he was always out front in the Senate and in political life, showing leadership and bringing others along. I'm enormously grateful to him for helping to bring our issues into the mainstream and taking the ridicule and attacks from the far right over the years -- almost daily, from hate radio to the Internet -- because he took a courageous stand. Thank you, Senator.

Why I Am Marching on Washington

I have talked about the idea of a march on Washington since the day after the election, as I explain in this Advocate column. But I didn't initially support this march, the National Equality March to take place October 10-11. That all changed, particularly after the DOMA brief, but also after listening to Cleve Jones when he came on the show for a full hour in which he took calls from across the country. The clincher though was the cocktail party commemorating Stonewall 40, put together to do damage control, as I note in the column:

Last June, amid growing criticism of President Obama’s foot-dragging on LGBT rights and after the despicably homophobic Defense of Marriage Act brief, the White House hosted a cocktail party to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Stonewall. It was nice for us to see a president commemorating the Stonewall riots for the first time. But it was an even better event for Obama himself, a great photo op, in the midst of the outcry, showing gay people -- dubbed by the media as LGBT “leaders” -- applauding him.

Leaders? The crowd included an overwhelming number of Democratic Party hacks and donors, Beltway social climbers, careerists (specifically, former gay group heads now looking for jobs), PR flacks, lobbyists, sycophants, and assorted sellouts. The fabulously superficial -- including a fashion editor who sits front and center at every New York fashion show -- were there too. And everyone was enthralled by the event, clapping uproariously for the president. Many of those present had raised lots of money for Obama and for the Democratic Party—or gave generously themselves -- and probably worked for 20 years to see the day when they could have cocktails and hors d’oeuvres in the White House, using the good china no less!

That really had me realizing we all needed to go, but as I said, I'd been thinking about a march early on:

It’s not that I was ever really opposed to the idea of a march. To the contrary, as listeners to my Sirius/XM radio show know, I’ve been talking about marching on Washington ever since the morning after Election Day. For me, it’s been a matter of historical precedent: The black civil rights movement wisely took advantage of a window of opportunity in 1963, when Democrats controlled both the White House and Congress. Republicans could no longer be blamed for the lack of civil rights protections, and marchers knew that media attention would put pressure on the Democrats and shame them into action.

We have that same window of opportunity today.

But that’s not to say I was immediately sold on this march.

Read the whole column to see my reasoning, and let me know your thoughts. Hope you'll be there!

UPDATE: Charles Perez didn't answer the phone when we called at the confirmed time for the interview -- on both his landline and his cell --though we'd spoken to him earlier several times and had confirmed the interview.
UPDATE II: Apparently Perez was called into court and didn't have our studio line; a judge issued a restraining order against his former partner. We will reschedule for Monday.

Today's Show: The Modernizers

3:30ET: I will be joined by, Gavin Weightman Author of , THE INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTIONARIES: The Making of the Modern World 1776-1914.

Obama Tries to Deaden the Pain

President Obama has a new approach on the Defense of Marriage Act, having learned the hard way that the previous one was offensive and outrageous. Yesterday the White House released a statement from the president, on the same day that new papers were filed in the DOMA case in which the Justice Department filed the now infamous DOMA brief back in June. This time, the papers made clear that DOMA is "discriminatory" and that the administration wants it repealed, even though government lawyers claim they must uphold it, bound by the Constitution.

As I said on the show, it was a brilliant move of the White House to also release a statement from the president that he wants to repeal DOMA, even though he's saying nothing new and he is continuing to refuse to say when he'll do it, and it's clearly no time soon. The strategy threw the media off, with some outlets actually focusing on Obama's call for repeal rather than the fact that the administration is still defending DOMA in court.

Bottom line: It's good that the administration is at least thinking about how its defense of a heinous law will play out, and is trying to deaden our pain while slitting our wrists. But please don't take it as anything more than that. Obama is taking the easiest path -- some Christian righters even think he wants the court to undo it so he doesn't have to spend any capital -- and the one that is least brave. Our protests have gotten through and the administration is worried about what we -- and others -- may think about the president's promises and his commitment to civil rights. But the White House is not worried enough to actually move on the repeal of DOMA now.

Challenging Clinton at Netroots Nation

Last night at Bill Clinton's speech at Netroots Nation, blogger and activist Lane Hudson stood up and interrupted Clinton, forcing the former president to discuss Don't Ask, Don't Tell and the Defense of Marriage Act.

Lane was sitting with me, and we'd discussed a possible question to ask Clinton if there was were going to be questions, but when it became clear there were not going to be questions, Lane decided he simply had to stand up and speak out. He gave me a heads up so I could get my camera ready but I didn't have time, as the right moment came and he had to do it. Anyway, I'm so proud of him - activism at it's finest (And no, this was not like the town hall mob, who are just trying to shut down discussion: Lane was trying advance discussion by directing the president to a relevant topic, and he did). His point was to get Clinton to talk about what President Obama should do on these issues. Of course, Clinton got defensive because he brought us both laws, so it more so became about what he did rather than what Obama should do. Still he came out forcefully against DADT though, calling for its repeal, and came pretty close to that on DOMA.
Go and read Lane's piece on HuffPost about it. There were people who were pissed off, in the room and online, but this was in the spirit of what NN is supposed to be about. And honestly, it made Clinton's speech better, got him off script, get him fired up (and giving some great observations on the current political dramas) and not just doing legacy building. All around a good night -- a worth the interminable speeches leading up to Clinton's.

UPDATE: Here is the video from C-Span.

Saturday Back Talk

These are some of the listener survey comments I read on the show this week. If you're a listener to the show and have not taken the survey please do so by scrolling down and clicking through on the right. Thanks!

Peabody, MA (Sirius)
I was the one who thought that "They Keep Voting" was Hilary Rosen and not Ann Coulter. If I may, I would like to suggest two new sound effects to add to your repertoire. One would be the Patti LaPone: "Who the HELL do you think you are?!!" and another would be the Larry Kramer: Why are you laughing?!!"

Gainsville, GA (Sirius)

I love listening to Michelangelo & reading his articles... he has a great voice!

Mason City, IA (XM)
You need to quantify who "People" are when you use the term in statements like "People are saying...." I want to know you aren't pulling things out of your ass.

Bristol, CT (XM)
What do you mean by "please don't drink the kool aide?" If it's a drug reference, you should drop the line.

Joshua Tree, CA (Sirius)
Michael, I really love your show and think that your entire team does a wonderful job of keeping us entertained and informed. Now for some mild criticism. I think that too often you tend to speak over those that you disagree with. I think that if you were to let them spew their crap, you would be letting them dig themselves into an hole. Let them ramble on, and in most cases, it will only give you more ammunition to tear their arguments apart.

Orlando, FL (Sirius)
I enjoy the coverage of news stories & events, but find the listener call-ins very frustrating. Mr. Signorile regularly interrupts the callers (and sometimes even his guests) when they are speaking if he thinks he knows what they are trying to say or what they will say next. This behavior is rude and disrupts the flow of the interaction. I understand that some callers go off on a tangent, but that's not always the case.....sometimes Mr. Signorile shouts his perceived 'summary' of the caller's opinion over them (and quite often he's wrong). On the days he is very fired up I simply change the channel rather than listen to him cut off every caller.

Nashville, TN (Sirius)
1ST: I think Cedric and Edric should both sit down for a BEER :-) talk it out guys... learn something from Thursday's worldwide teachable moment!

2ND: The clips of the week are GENIUS! Maybe I'm a little biased because I'm a music producer and audio editor... and I am always curious how those clips are pulled together. But, I also think the music behind the clips set a great tone for the moments being spotlighted.. ESPECIALLY when there are dramatic breaks and build-ups in the dance music.. or use of the song from the 'CHEERS' theme.. I think they are great. AND finally. It would be a shame to put so much work into the clips.. but then only hear them ONCE a week. The best thing about the Friday show is that I get to hear the clips a few times. I wish they were available for download somewhere. Please consider that.

Mobile, AL (XM)
I love the clips of the week----some things are worth listening to more than once!

Fort Lauderdale, FL (Sirius)

I love the Clips of the Week remix! The producers do an amazing job reviewing the important sound bites and compiling them to music. It regularly incites dialog, laughter and some "WTF moments" with my partner and me. It's great to listen to before happy hour or a dinner party as it reminds us of the political and GLBT hot topics of the past week. Keep up the great work!

Columbus, OH (Sirius)
I love, LOVE the show. Only thing I would request: I wish the weekly headlines(?) would be.. done differently. It can get annoying, and is sometimes even difficult to hear the headlines. Great show!

Longview, TX (XM)
I enjoy the insightful & informative analysis of current events on the show. Every time I listen to the show, I learn something new! My one [small] criticism is regarding Michelangelo's continual negative comments regarding the south (as in the southern US states). I am a southerner born & bred, and find that he regularly puts the south and us southern "rednecks" down. Just a small comment / criticism on a small issue that hit home for me. Thanks and keep up the great work.

Modesto, CA (Sirius)
Started on a road trip 2 days ago back to CA from TX, in a car that has Sirius Radio. I have listened to your show every day I have been driving, and enjoyed all of it, even called in once the first day :). Keep up the great show and the work you do. I will be signing up for Sirius Radio because of your show :).

Orlando, FL (Sirius)
I define myself as a gay conservative, which makes for mixed perspective on today's headlines. I tend to follow more conservative views when it comes to politics, but I do not define myself as a Republican due to the party being broken. I do not define myself as a Democrat as I see them as being completely out of touch with reality. I listen to the show, but I would not consider myself a fan. I listen to the show to better educate myself on how others view current topics. I probably agree with about 1 out of every 10 things that Michelangelo says, but this is America and we are all entitled to our own opinions.

Royal Palm Beach, FL (Sirius)
When you are doing phone interviews, I can hear someone talking on the phone behind you through your mic Michelangelo, not while you are talking but when the caller is talking. Does Sirius have you in a damn closet or something? Please have that guy mumbling in the back ground move away from your microphone.

Omaha, NE (Sirius)
I must fight the gay advocates of gay marriage or I will lose my job, my apartment, and my friends to the consequences. Should the government sanction my butt sex? Without basic rights I think we have more pressing matters to address.

Glenn Greenwald on G.E., Olbermann and O'Reilly

I had Glenn Greenwald on the show again today to discuss the story about Keith Olbermann and G.E. which he has covered all week (and which I had covered as well, particularly since much of the media has not), after the New York Times revealed that G.E. had confirmed cutting a deal with News Corp to silence both Olbermann and Bill O'Reilly in their ongoing feud. Glenn wrote about this here and here, and he came on the show earlier in the week.

Today he came back on the show today to follow-up on details that came out later in the week, and talk about his own correspondence with Olbermann in which Olbermann said that everything Glenn wrote was accurate. This was in complete contradiction to what Olbermann told his viewers -- and the Times -- when he said there was "no deal," attacking the Times reporter in the process, which was a low blow. Several other liberal bloggers have weighed in, including Jason Linkins on Huffington Post, who wrote a hard-hitting piece.

Glenn and I discussed the Linkins piece, as well as the criticism coming from some readers and fans of Olbermann who think Olbermann is being attacked unfairly and also believe this story gives fodder to the right and shouldn't be discussed. One reason why I have spent so much time on it is that few media organizations and commentators covered it, because most have their own interests to protect (such as anyone else at MSNBC) or perhaps have similar conflicts regarding corporate ownership. Below is an audio clip of my full interview with Glenn Greenwald from today.

Today's Show: Is Olbermann telling the whole truth?

4:30ET: Glenn Greenwald of Salon.com, will join me to discuss the Olbermann, G.E. controversy.

UH Coach Suspended for "F" Bomb

We talked a lot about this on Friday on the show, with the consensus being that the guy should be fired for having used the word "faggot" three times derogatorily: University of Hawaii coach Greg McMackin has now been suspended for 30 days without pay: given a 7 percent pay cut to his $1.1 million salary; and will make a PSA with the LGBT group. Some of the money saved will go toward paying an intern to work at the LGBT group. Now we'll see what the Western Athletic Conference does in terms of a reprimand.

I'm glad he's losing some money but wonder if you all think he got off easy or if this is how he would be treated if he made a slur against any other group. We'll get into it on the show.

UPDATE: McMackin breaks down crying in yet another apology. LGBT groups say they're satisfied with the punishment.

Horror in Tel Aviv

Every time I read about this my eyes tear up and then I get furious. This attack on teens, kids struggling with their sexual orientation, is just the latest example of the horrific impact of religious condemnations of homosexuality. Though they are seeking the gunman still, I don't think we'll be surprised to learn it's a radical religious extremist making a threat against an entire minority group by brazenly entering a gay center. It parallels the attack on Dr. George Tiller in this country, killed by a religious extremist because he performed late term abortions -- and the effect was to send a chill through the medical community and successfully shut down the clinic. That's why I don't think what happened in Tel Aviv, frighteningly, is far off from what can happen here (And don't forget a man went into a Nashville church little over a year ago looking for liberals and gays to kill, murdering several people.) We'll discuss this on the show and take your calls and thoughts.

Saturday Back Talk

Some of the listener survey comments I read on the show this week. Please take the survey if you are a listener to the show and haven't yet taken it. Scroll down and click through on the right. Thanks!

Barhamsville, VA (XM)
Interesting show, but highly hypocritical. Everything you accuse your opposition of saying you turn around and say: you know. Stop saying you know. Back up some of your thoughts with facts. Finally, why do you always blame the Police first?

Santa Ana, CA (XM)
When I first started listening, I couldn't stand Michelangelo's show, I used to call it the Michelangelo "Bitcharelli" Show. But, after listening closely to the content, I became hooked. Now it seems that Michelangelo is my main source for current events. Plus, his guest interviews are usually pretty compelling. Keep it up!!

N.Hollywood, CA (Sirius)
I really dislike the Friday "sometimes dumb" playback. It is an utter waste of time and energy. It is disturbing, disjointed and annoying.

Springfield, MO (XM)
Well I knew you were informative, educational, witty and put on a great show. What I didn't know is how effing hot you are. You re a total babe!!! I love the show and i hate to criticize any part of it because of all the hard work that goes into it but for me the lackluster part of the show is the medley you do of the newsclips of the week.now give me a book damn it!!!

Hermann, MO (Sirius)
I generally like the show. The discussion topics are relevant and timely. I think Michelangelo is extremely intelligent and well versed in political events. My one and only complaint, which I have stated before with no follow up from the show, is that in the 2 or 3 times I have called in, Michelangelo seemed dismissive and uninterested in actually partaking in dialogue with me. I am therefore disinclined to call in any time in the future.

Mt. Joy, PA (XM)
Mr. Signorile, you restore pride and dignity in being gay. Any subject that you tackle is done in good taste and what I would like my straight friends to listen to -- to indeed make us equals for once. You do throw in a smart-assed barb in there every once in a while which in moderation is good taste and grandly funny w/o making being gay extremely cheap, as conservatives come to expect.

Warner Robins, GA (XM)
I love the show but I wanted to express my thoughts on one of the callers. Because of a certain caller from Wyoming who has a first name that is similar to mine I have been too embarrassed to call the show myself. The reason for this is because I don't want to be confused with that other caller with a similar name. While I share a few minor details with that caller, I am a black male with some conservative views. I think of the caller "Cedric" as an annoying train wreck of hostility, anger, self loathing and arrogance. When I listen to him go on a rant blaming everyone but the man in the mirror for the troubles of the world that he appears to not be willing to help change, I want to sometimes scream.

Now my comments are not meant to attack the person but if we ever were to meet face to face (god help me) and have a conversation I would find myself thinking as a fellow black gay man that this Cedric person is a true sellout leaning toward being an ignorant "uncle tom" for the gay community. His calls to the show are laughable and I appreciate Michelangelo giving him the opportunity to speak and make an ass of himself. This show is more "fair and balanced" than the TV network that "Cedric" probably drools over every night. He does have a good point or two but he needs to get a clue and open his mind more. He is a poor representative of the black gay community. Yes I said it! A black gay man raised in Florida and living in Georgia.

Yes,my name is Edric, like "Cedric" but without the first "C"

Miramichi, NB Canada (XM)
I hate the re-runs. Don't get me wrong, you deserve a break and/or a day off, but instead of re-hashing a previous show, why not bring in a GUEST host for the day? Sorry for raging but at the end of the day, I along with other Sirius/XM subscribers are paying the bills with our subscriptions.

Peabody, MA (Sirius)
I am a long-time listener to the show and now work from home and enjoy the ability to have your show on while I work at the computer. I'm puzzled by all the hubbub about your so-called pregnant pauses...I never even notice them.

Michelangelo, earlier today I saw "Outrage." I was quite impressed. I found it to be quite provocative and riveting.

At the moment I have no constructive criticism of your show. I love it the way it is. We have exchanged emails in the past re your funny sound effects (which I love). Remember, I was the one who thought that "They Keep Voting" was Hilary Rosen and not Ann Coulter. If I may, I would like to suggest two new sound effects to add to your repertoire. One would be the Patti LuPone: "Who the HELL do you think you are?!!" and another would be the Larry Kramer: Why are you laughing?!

David Mixner on Prop 8

Several groups in California, and nationally, are now advising that gay and lesbian Californians wait until 2012 to put up a ballot measure repealing Proposition 8 rather than doing so in 2010, as many activists had expected.

The long-time gay activist, author and political strategist David Mixner came on the show this week and we talked about that, among other things. He made a strong case for not waiting on mounting a repeal to Prop 8.
