As I tweeted last night, an interesting end to 2009: Karl Rove is divorced, Rush Limbaugh has been rushed to the hospital and now we learn that Rick Warren's church may be going under. Is Warren channeling Oral Roberts in the urgent plea for cash? Is Saddleback going down?

Did the Gays Keep Rove Married?
We now learn that the man who pushed antigay marriage amendments to help Bush get elected has finalized his divorce. And let's not forget about his gay father (he was not Karl Rove's biological father but a stepfather whom Rove called his adopted father) whose rights he worked against and who is now deceased. Since the argument against marriage for gays and lesbians is that it somehow affects traditional heterosexual marriage, all over Twitter and on blogs people are joking that it must have been the gays who destroyed Rove's marriage.
But actually, gays probably prolonged Rove's marriage. People who are married for 24 years don't just wake up one day and decide it's over. The break-up is usually years in the making and they often put it off because of how it might affect others -- or themselves -- for the time being. It was hypocritical enough that Rove had a gay father whom he claimed to love and yet was pushing a cynical re-election strategy for George W. Bush that was all about demonizing gays by claiming they were destroying marriage. Rove quietly went out to Palm Springs when his father died, trying to keep it all on the down low and had been circumspect when discussing his father to reporters. To then go on and get divorced while in the thick of defending "traditional marriage" -- and any time during the Bush administration -- would have certainly only underscored that and brought a lot of attention.
So, interestingly, the Roves divorced after Bush was out of office, and after Rove had established himself as a pundit, granted a quickie Texas "amicable" divorce during the low-attention holiday time. I don't think it's a stretch to say it's quite likely gay marriage -- and that fact that Rove fought against it -- is what kept the Roves together longer than they may have stayed together otherwise.

Interview: Will Phillips, Grade School Hero

Will Phillips, a ten year-old Arkansas boy, became a hero to many when he refused to say the Pledge of Allegiance in class because LGBT are not afforded "liberty and justice for all."
I interviewed Will and his mother, Laura Phillips, on the show this week. And of course, Will was given our Archangel of the Year Award in our annual Angels and Gassies.
Interview: HRC's Solmonese Looks Back & Ahead
Below is my interview with Joe Solmonese, president of the Human Rights Campaign, from earlier in the week. We discussed a report to the HRC board by Solmonese in which he described the "significant strides" on LGBT rights in 2009. I agree with him: There were huge gains on marriage in the states, thanks to local activists.
But at the outset of the interview, when I asked Solmonese about the gains to which he was referring, it was telling that he began talking about President Obama and Congress. The HRC outlook on 2009 seems to be that just because Obama was elected and took office -- rather than John McCain and Sarah Palin -- and is light years better than George W. Bush, we have won something big. I think that's a pretty low standard by which to judge a president or anyone else. Did Obama keep his promises and move quickly on our rights? Did he live up to the self-described term of "fierce advocate?" Is there a passion from him on our issues? Most activists would say it would be laughable to answer "yes" to any of those questions.
Grass roots activists have pointed to the inaction of the administration, and much of the mainstream media, from Time and Newsweek to ABC and CNN, has covered it as well, looking specifically at the issues and at the injustice that is still very much with us. I noted to Solmonese that usually it is HRC that is in the mainstream but here is the mainstream agreeing with the grass roots/net roots while HRC seems to be out of touch. Solmonese did note that on issues like DADT tell and DOMA, when it came to court cases, the administration is problematic -- I would say this administration has been downright hostile, for example, defying a court order to give a lesbian federal worker her rights -- and on this he admitted the administration doesn't listen to HRC's advice. I'll say.
Newsweek recently predicted that in 2010 Obama would do "nada on gay rights." But Joe Solmonese thinks it will be a good year, that Obama will pull through and that we will see the Employment Non-Discrimination Act passed and DADT repealed. Listen in.

Angel and Gassie Audio Statuettes
The Archangel of the the Year Award on the show today went to 10-year-old Arkansas student Will Phillips who would not stand up and say the Pledge of Allegiance because "liberty and justice" still doesn't apply to LGBT people. Here is the audio statuette.
And the Biggest Gassie Award went to none other than Glenn Beck. It's a great one, listen in. Our producer David Guggenheim did a great job with these this year as always. We gave out dozens of awards and audio statuettes.
Angels and Gassies of 2009
It's time once again for our annual Angel of the Year Awards, and our Gassie Awards -- Gasbags, Monsters, Liars, Hypocrites and Total Freaks from Hell.
We'll be taking your nominations throughout today's show on the phones, and we've already taken a lot from Facebook and Twitter, but feel free to keep posting. Who gets an award this year and who is the Greatest Angel? The Biggest Gassie? We're handing out the sometimes very noisy audio statuettes all afternoon, so join us, 2-6 ET. And we've still got lots of books to give out in our Holiday Book Bonanza!
Listen to The Michelangelo Signorile Show weekdays live from 2-6 pm ET on Sirius XM's OutQ: Sirius 109, XM 98 and on the Sirius XM iPhone app. Not a subscriber? Not a problem! Interview: Mark Kleinschmidt, Openly Gay Mayor
I've been meaning to post this audio for a couple of weeks, finally getting around to it. This is my interview with Mark Kleinschmidt from early December, the newly elected first openly gay mayor of Chapel Hill, NC. We had an enjoyable conversation that I hoped opened a window for people nationally on how things are changing in North Carolina.

3:30pm EST - Last week, Carl Siciliano, the Executive Director of The Ali Forney Center, wrote a post on Joe My God, talking about the trauma and torment many LGBT teens have gone through and still experience. 4:30pm EST - In November, we brought to your attention Will Philips, the fifth grader from Arkansas, who decided that he wouldn't say the Pledge Of Allegiance because he didn't feel the closing line, "With liberty and justice for all," was accurate when it came to the rights of the LGBT community. Last week, we were able to sit and finally talk with Will and his mother Laura about his bold move, and we will play that interview for you this afternoon.

Saturday Back Talk
Some listener survey comments I read on the show this week. If you're a listener to the show and you have not taken the survey please do so by scrolling dow nad clicking through on the right. Thanks!
Chicamauga, GA (Sirius)
Michael is too closed minded. He is so extreme I can only listen for a short period most of the time. I do like hearing both sides, but there is only one side with this host. Gay listeners don't have a lot of options to get news or hear talk about subjects that are important to us and not all of us are left-wing radicals. Almost all of my gay friends are like thinking.
Richmond VA (XM)
I first tuned into OutQ out of curiosity, but found excellent political discussion. Mike is great! DeCaro always has interesting things to say. You don't have to be gay to enjoy OutQ!
Bridgeport, IL (XM)
I am a totally straight truck driver, but I do have a stepson who is gay, living in west Hollywood. I know more about what is going on with the LGBT than he does.I think at times you are a little hard headed on some isusses ,but so am I. Over all I do like the show.
Bobcaygeon, OT Canada (XM)
Michelangelo: someone accused you of being biased a few weeks back (listener comment) and I had to laugh. It;s through your discerning and fact based explanations that I become aware of what the actions and reasonings of the right wing ARE! You take real time in presenting their views (all insane of course) and stances and explain their positions fully. Biased?? You always present in reasonable terms what they are saying and doing - fairly - and THEN you demolish them! I just love your show, sitting here in my cabin in the woods, snow blanketed, fire going, dogs napping and my solar powered Michaelangelo. Thanks for your wonderful work and for being outrageous.
Greenville, TN (Sirius)
Michelangelo is great!
Hamden, CT (XM)
I appreciate all the preparation that goes into making such a show possible. You really do your homework! (As a teacher, I appreciate it!) I really enjoy your interviews especially with people I've never had the opportunity to see/hear before. Thank you for all your hard work!
Jefferson, WI (XM)
I am so happy that I found this show. It makes me happy, upset, and I laugh and cry. I am now aware of things that effect our community and am so motivated. Thank you so much for having such a wonderful show that i will continue to listen to.
Frederick, MD (Sirius)
Coming out this past year, listening to your show, reading yours and other authors' books, and other challenges to my former way I lived my life---I'm now a Democrat, liberal and challenging these Republican "gas bags"! If you can get more of these gas bags on your show, and challenge them directly (as in that whack job preacher you interviewed a couple of months ago), I would enjoy that as a listener.
Gulfport, MS (XM)
LOVE OUTQ. I'm not lesbian or bi but to me sexual preference is not important or a prerequisite for a brain or good taste! I support LGBT issues and i think your show is great--a native NY'er i have grown up w/GLBT people in my community and OUTQ is AWESOME!
Jackson, MS (Sirius)
We try so hard to keep up with Human Rights issues at our house. It can be a little difficult to stay current with important issues tucked away here in Mississippi. Your show helps fill in some of those gaps for us. I too listen everyday at work with my headphones on so the uber-conservative folks that I work for aren't "offended". When I get home often topics that you have covered are what are discussed with our children at dinner. And really being informative AND entertaining helps my afternoons go by much faster.

Today's Show: First Uganda, Now Rwanda
3:30pm EST: The past few weeks, we've heard a lot of news coming out of Uganda regarding what many have deemed the "Kill The Gays Bill." We've spoken about the people who have been the influences of these ideas and the lack of responsibility they have taken when it comes to speaking out against them. And now there is word that another African nation, Rwanda, is seriously considering similar legislation that we see in Uganda. Joining me this afternoon is Jim Burroway, editor of Box Turtle Bulletin, who over the past week, has been compiling the coveragetheir site has done since February regarding these two countries.

Today's Show: Washington DC Marriage Bill
3:30pm EST: Earlier this week, the DC City Council passed a bill legalizing same sex marriage in Washington DC. According to Michael Crawford, co-chair of DC for Marriage, "This is a milestone for the LGBT movement for a number of important reasons. First, the overwhelming vote proves we can win legislatively. Second, D.C. will be the first majority-minority jurisdiction to legalize marriage. And, third, D.C. will be the first place below the Mason-Dixon Line to end discrimination against same-sex couples and their families." He joins us this afternoon to talk more about the success of the bill to this point and the obstacles it still has to go through, including a law suit by Bishop Harry Jackson and to get through the United States Congress.

Today's Show: Gay Man in the Senate?
4:30pm EST: At the beginning of this year, we saw a lot of controversy surround the vacated Senate seat by President Obama. While Roland Burris had successfully occupied the seat over the past year with much speculation and accusations as to how got it, news from Illinois is he will not be running for another term. In September, Jacob Meister, a Chicago attorney and openly gay man, announced his candidacy for the Senate. He's considered a long-shot, though without an incumbent running anything can happen. He joins us this afternoon to talk about what his plans are if he wins the Illinois US Senate seat.

Bil Browning, editor-in-chief of The Bilerico Project, join us this afternoon to talk about his decision to have Ronald Gold as a contributor, why he allowed "'No' To The Notion Of Transgender" as Gold's first post and why it has been taken off since and dropped Gold as a contributor.

Today's Show: Portland Mayor Sam Adams
3:30pm EST: On Saturday, Houston became the largest city in the U.S. to elect an openly gay mayor, Annise Parker. Until now, the largest city to have an openly gay mayor is Portland, Oregon, which elected Sam Adams in November of 2008. In his first year, however, the national LGBT community didn't get a chance to know Sam Adams, as much of his time was consumed: Soon after taking office this year, Adams found himself embroiled in a scandal after he admitted to a relationship he'd previously denied with an 18-year old male intern who worked at the Oregon state legislature. There were calls for his resignation, and there were also many activists, locally and nationally, standing behind him. A recall effort failed to gather enough signatures. Sam Adams has moved on to the important issues facing Portland.
In his first national interview since the failure of the recall effort, Sam Adams joins us to talk about the events he's confronted and what the future brings.

Today's Show: Reacting To Anti-Trans Bias
3:30pm EST: Last week, Ronald Gold, one of the five original founders and the first media director of the National Gay & Lesbian Task Force, wrote a opinion piece that on Bilerico.com (which has been taken down due to much criticism) titled, "'No' To The Notion Of Transgender, "and which drew responses calling it ugly, vicious transphobic hate speech. Joining me to talk about her reaction, Autumn Sandeen, a transgender activist, who also wrote a reaction on Pam's House Blend.

Now, to have this happen under Obama is really depressing” said Gregg Gonsalves, long time AIDS activist, who joins us this afternoon to talk about President Obama's programs to fight AIDS and how it doesn't compare to Former-President Bush's fight.

Saturday Back Talk
These are some of the listener survey comments I read on the show this week. We had a lot of fun reading these, with lots of people calling in -- particularly regarding Cedric in Wyoming (people said that no matter how much his views bothered them we should not ban him from calling in) and to explain how it is that they listen to the entire four hours of the show each weekday! If you're a listener to the show and haven't taken the survey please do so by scrolling down and clicking through on the right. Thanks!
Port St. Lucie, Fl (Sirius)
Love the show Mike. I listen everyday for the entire 4 hours. PLEASE stop taking calls from Cedric in Wyoming. As a black gay man, he is one of those cowards in the black gay community that is afraid to come out to anyone. He really makes me sick!!
North Hollywood, CA (XM)
I am a fifty year old lesbian who is so happy to have found OutQ radio 2 years ago. I have always wanted a gay show like Michelangelo's to keep me informed on gay issues in America and the world. I also make sure to talk to as many people as I can when you bring out a topic that needs to be brought to the attention of everyone. Thank you for the information. Uganda is the topic that has my attention at the moment. Can we say Holocaust?
Hattiesburg, MS (XM)
I listen to your show almost every day. I really love the show and the guests you have on. Your point of view can be a little overpowering sometimes but I can see your point. As an openly gay man in Mississippi, ( I came out when I was 12 with no problems, thank goodness) I have never had to hide my sexuality, but the part I love the most is I work for a VERRRYYYY Christian man that is extremely right wing, and I listen to your show on his XM radio. If he only knew what I was listening to on his radio. It makes me laugh every day. But I also listen to you in my car.
Georgetown, DE (XM)
I think Signorile is a genius at analyzing GLTBQ issues. He is incisive in catching the nuances that sometimes fall through the cracks in regular reporting or commentary. He has a sense of humor, which adds to the attractiveness of his presentation. I also like the fact that he is gracious to his callers and guests, yet does not let them off the hook when it comes to commenting on the issues. He holds people accountable and doesn't suffer fools or bullshit gladly. I strongly disagree with the listener who called him a demagogue, although he does have the charisma that is often associated with demagogues. The difference is, he has a heart and mind and isn't afraid to use them.
Ferndale, MI (XM)
I love your show. This year, I started working for an org called the Michigan Project for Informed Public Policy. We are a coalition of over 100 Michigan mental health/social science experts that provide education on the psychological experiences of LGBT people to the media, legislators, school districts, etc. We hope to shape affirmative public policy in Michigan (and we did in Kalamazoo!). As a newbie to the in-and-outs of LGBT public policy, your show has really been source of support and information. Thanks for all that you do.
Hermann, MO (Sirius)
There are times when your opinions and behavior frustrate me to the point of wanting to throw something and I have been very uncomfortable talking with you on the air, however, your knowledge of LGBT issues (or BLTG as some JoeMyGod "commenters" identify as) is astounding. You have to understand that for some gays in remote and rural areas, your show, and shows like it are the ONLY exposure we have to others in the gay community. Now here's the thing you need to know: Recently, my lab partner caught me listening to the show and now insists that we tune you in each and every afternoon that we are working together. She is a straight, married woman who absolutely loves the show and it has caused us to have some rather frank, interesting, and supportive conversations regarding the gay rights movement.
Edmonton, AB Canada (Sirius)
I am a fairly new listener to OutQ. I really enjoy your show, it is very informative regarding your political situation and LGBT civil rights issues. I am involved LGBT issues in Alberta and Canada and was the Campaign manager for a close friend who is a Gay man when he ran as a Liberal Candidate in the last Provincial Election here. Keep up the fight, great work!

Today's Show: 'Draft Dick Cheney 2012'
4:30pm EST: The organization - "Draft Dick Cheney 2012" – recently launched, and unveiled their new Web site. And one of the guys heading it up is none other than a former Log Cabin Republicans leader, political director Christopher Barron. Their aim: To convince the former vice president to seek the Republican presidential nomination in the next race for the White House. But there may be a major roadblock to the group's pitch - Cheney himself -- and why a gay guy would want someone from the Bush administration back in office, let alone Darth Vader himself, is anyone's guess. Barron joins us this afternoon to talk about it.

This is my full interview (clip below) on the show yesterday with Jarrett Barrios of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation regarding the widespread criticism of the group in its handling of the Adam Lambert/ABC controversy, which had GLAAD sending out statement after statement trying to counter reports that it backed ABC in banning Lambert from several shows.
Barrios came into the studio to sit down with me and sincerely wanted to clear the air. He accepted responsibility for what happened and admitted that the group's first update after ABC banned Lambert from two more shows was problematic, attributing it to a lack of clarity. But I still believe the explanations given weren't adequate -- and judging from the callers to the show afterward, many people agree -- and that GLAAD is still not taking a forceful stand. Nor do I believe, as I told Barrios, that the decision by The View to book Lambert for a taped segment Thursday was a "partial victory," as he called it, since he's still banned from shows they had dumped him from.
Overall I think GLAAD has a long way to go in explaining what happened here and also its larger mission. It is compromised by the fact that it takes money from ABC --something else we discussed -- and that it just doesn't seem to be at the forefront of controversies and defamation, more so focused on giving out awards and patting media on the back.
Missing Bush?
Has it really come to this? Long-time AIDS activist Gregg Gonsalves tells the New York Times, regarding President Obama's response to HIV/AIDS: “I’m holding my nose as I say this, but I miss George W Bush. On AIDS, he really stepped up. He did a tremendous thing. Now, to have this happen under Obama is really depressing.”
The article describes the dismal response by this administration to the epidemic and lays part of the blame at the feet of Rahm Emanuel's brother:
AIDS advocates complained bitterly that they had been betrayed and that the Bush administration’s best legacy was being gutted — and they blame a doctor and budget adviser who is also the brother of the White House chief of staff, Rahm Emanuel.
