I went on CNN last night (the clip is at the bottom of this post) and tried to sound the alarm that we're getting bad signals from the White House and Defense Department. We're seeing contradictions both in what President Obama implied in his State of the Union address on "don't ask, don't tell" and in what Joint Chiefs Chairman Admiral Mullen has expressed in the past with regard to how repeal would take place.
Many thought that President Obama's pledge in the SOTU to "this year" work with the military and the Congress to repeal DADT meant that it would actually be repealed this year. But as is too often the case with this administration on LGBT rights, taking the president at what seemed like his word is expecting too much. Obama had built in his wiggle room to stretch this out for years: "this year" he would "work with Congress and our military to finally repeal," he said, which I guess the White House would say is different from working to repeal this year.
Indeed, now we see further evidence that this pledge is yet another stalling tactic from the president. In an AP story and in a a blog post on The Hill we see more details about an announcement on DADT that will come from Secretary Gates and Admiral Mullen in Senate hearings on Tuesday -- an announcement many got excited about, including many in the media who hyped it -- and it looks like they'll be telling us how they're going to drag this out. I could be wrong, and perhaps there will be details that counter what we're hearing. Well know on Tuesday. But so far it looks troubling.
Apparently they will announce another study, a "special investigation," which could take years to complete -- though we've had study after study showing there would be no problem with "unit cohesion" -- and which could focus on straight and gay men showering together and other lurid and sensational issues, which will no doubt be used by the right to scare the public and deflate those polls showing overwhelming support for repeal. It's 1993 all over again.
Meanwhile, according to the AP report, there isn't likely to be a vote in Congress this year -- something spineless Democrats would no doubt be very happy about -- since Congress would have to wait for the new DOD study, which again, could take years. That could even mean putting this off until Obama's certainly-not-assured second term. This is a direct contradiction to what Barney Frank and others have said, in describing a plan to make DADT repeal an amendment to the Defense Authorization Bill voted on in 2010.
It's also a direct contradiction to what Admiral Mullen has expressed, viewing the Pentagon as needing to follow Congress's lead on this and not the other way around. At West Point in May of 2008 Mullen expressed the view "that Congress, and not the military, is responsible for [DADT]." In his Senate confirmation hearings in 2007, Mullen said, "I really think it is for the American people to come forward, really through this body, to both debate that policy and make changes, if that's appropriate." He went on to say, "I'd love to have Congress make its own decisions" with respect to considering repeal. But now Mullen is on board with having the Pentagon lead, with yet another lengthy study, apparently before Congress acts.
This is nothing but more stalling, more foot-dragging by President Obama while men and women will continue to be discharged from the military based on their sexual orientation. It also means that, if ENDA is dead, as some suggest, that LGBT people are getting nothing in 2010.

Saturday Back Talk
Listener survey comments I read on this week's show. If you're a listener and haven't taken the survey please do so by scrolling down on the right and clicking through. Thanks!
Alameda, CA (XM)
Love the show. It is smart, does not dumb down - great job.
Sandwich, MA (XM)
Please stop the Obama-bashing. We need this president. Give him time. Our alternative is no alternative at all.
Queens, NY (Sirius)
Love, love, love how you aggressively refuse to let people equivocate and fudge their way past anti-gay comments and acts. Continue to give them all the hell they deserve. I say this because you often 'go there' and confront people in ways that are uncomfortable to the hateful and electric to listeners. You often say what I wish I would say if I were not afraid of losing my job. Thanks from the bottom of my heart!
Asheboro, NC (Sirius)
I love your show and it keeps me sane! I would like if you spoke more on the Uniting American Families Act(UAFA) bill. Bi-nationals(a gay couple where one is not American or has residency for long)are completely ignored by the media, and even more ignored by the GLBT community. Thanks for the show and for all that you d For me and my partner, you're a light in the darkness that has become a good part of our life.
Hermann, MO (Sirius)
The debate on how you all pronounce the word huge (uge) and human (uman) has become a running joke and I am very amused! I actually lol every time you forget and say "uge". Perhaps consider saying, "really, really big" instead?
Birmingham, AL (XM)
I really enjoy the show --here is one thing that drives me crazy! Listener comments! I want to start bashing my radio in if I hear one more person complain about your voice or silent pauses! I may run my car into a light pole if i hear it again! I would rather hear you an hour long segment on which starbucks around you makes a better latte!
Chicago, IL (Sirius)
Compared to the other OutQ programs you say very little about yourself personally. I realize your show is also a lot more serious than the others as well. Although I enjoy it very much, I sometimes find it so depressing that there are so many idiots out there doing so many stupid things. I occasionally need to escape to the Broadway channel to cheer up. How does this all affect you personally? Are you able leave this at the station when your show is over or is it difficult to let go..especially when there is a very contentious issue being discussed?
Irvine, CA (Sirius)
I really enjoy the show and listen whenever possible. I like that some background is presented for the subjects and that questions are then posed to the listeners. Both sides of issues are explored and I really like the format.
Newark, OH (Sirius)
I sometimes wonder if the Transgender issues get "swept under the rug," but today I called in to ask about transgender parents in the gender survey and was informed you would not be taking calls for that segment. I was very pleased that you raised the question that I wanted to ask. I am very curious though if you had intended to ask the question or if my message got to you. Either way it was covered very well. I would like to hear more about trans issues on future shows. Over all I give you an A and you get a gold star next to your name on the bulletin board.
Alexandria, VA (XM)
Your show is one of the few that makes me think and isn't just mindless entertainment. How about doing a show about us older, single gay men and what is happening to us as we age. Are there active retirement communities just for gays? What happens if we need assisted living or, horror of horrors, a nursing home? What kind of discrimination, if any, would we face?
Boston, MA (XM)
Enjoy Michelangelo's insight and discussion about issues that affect the rights of all people. I think "gay" rights are human rights, are the rights of us all.
Baja California, Mexico (Sirius)
I really enjoy your show most of the time and the issues raised. Thanks for being out there. We pick you up via Sirius while in Baja California, Mexico, where we are two of the few foreign lesbians in our small town. It’s lonely out here, so OutQ helps a lot.

Today's Show: Obama's "Second Class Citzens"
4:30pm EST - Last October, once again, President Obama promised he would repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and during his presidential campaign, he expressed, "America is ready to get rid of the Don't Ask, Don't Tell policy. Yet there is no indication things are moving along. That is the case on a number of LGBT issues, and it has had Richard Socarides, special assistant to President Bill Clinton and senior White House adviser on gay rights from 1997 to 1999, criticizing Obama throughout 2009. Writing once again on "don't ask, Don't Tell" specifically, he says Obama treats gays like "second class citizens in today's Wall Street Journal: Ask Obama About Don't Ask, Don't Tell: Gay voters are growing impatient for equality. He'll join us to discuss it.

Saturday Back Talk
Listener survey comments I read on the show this week. If you're a listener to the show and haven't taken the survey, please do so by scrolling down on the right and clicking through. Thanks!
Albany, NY (XM)
I discovered you while watching the documentary Outrage. I agree with your recent comments about GLAAD's failure to nominate this great documentary about the hypocrisy of closeted politicians who vote against our rights. I appreciate your thoughtful and insightful analysis of current issues affecting LGBT people. Thanks for keeping us informed about the stories and issues that are not reported in mainstream media.
Riviera Beach, FL (Sirius)
loved Bruno, when i started reading about glaad yesterday...it came back to me that they didn't like it for absurd reasons. its an honest piece of art that promotes gay issues and exposes silly stereotypes. i don't feel it reinforces anything negative. that movie is a healthy and fun portrayal of a gay character. fuck GLAAD, they suck. they are so vanilla and are destructive to gay culture. I'm sickened by them. i hope Michelangelo attacks them regularly until they die or change.
Miami, FL (Sirius)
I am so disappointed that I am not able to call today. I tried calling on the cell phone and home phone. I wanted to comment about the New Times article about South Beach and want to send a link of Steve Rothaus' (Miami Herald LGBT reporter) response to the article. The article was poorly written and the source of the info is a washed up Boston drag queen. There were four document cases of Gay violence in Miami-Dade County last year, 3 or 75% were in South Beach. The example she cited was of a man who left a bar at 4:30 am...Oh well!
Orlando FL, (Sirius)
To be truthful, the constant Obama bashing is getting quite tiresome and I've shut the show off a lot lately because the tone is so negative about what the president is or isn't doing in only his first year in office. We will likely suffer through another Republican debacle (like the previous 8 years) when they are returned to power due to the constant tearing down of Barack Obama everyday on shows like yours. I'm a liberal-leaning moderate and will never understand why the strict liberals (like Signorile) do not ever GET IT that successful governing is most times from the middle...allowing for modest strides in rights. The liberals very much appear grumpy and unsatisfied (even with Obama in the White House) so it's clear this dissatisfaction will succeed in eroding Obama's base and we'll have not had any opportunity to see any real change. Shame on people like Signorile who will constantly 'fight the good fight' but fail to understand how to exercise patience or execute a plan that talks about future positive steps, instead of complaining that change is not happening in a suitable time frame for the liberals.
Austin, TX (Sirius)
I love your show and I have learned a lot. I have become much more politically involved with LGBT issues. In the past, I was apolitical but now I have become the "go to" person with my friends on political issues. The only thing I don't like is the way you say "huge" and "human". Do you mispronounce Rush Limbaugh on purpose? I can't stand him but when I hear you pronounce his name, I cringe. That's all; love your show.
St. Louis, MO (XM)
I enjoy listening to all sides of a topic and just because I am a gay person doesn't automatically mean Democrat. Listening to the shows on the gay channel I consider for entertainment purposes only. And there is NOTHING wrong with that! : )
Milton, FL (Sirius)
I enjoy the show most when you cover issues being ignored by the mainstream media - ie. outing of closeted politicians. Your monologues are enjoyable as well, but I most enjoy listening to callers. Especially when you talk to folks who do not agree with your viewpoint. Sometimes it can be like arguing about religion (they'll never come over to your side), but it's fun to listen to anyway.
Manchester, CT (Sirius)
I like the show, but sometimes a point is belabored for so long that I have the change the station...and when I return 5 or 10 minutes later, the SAME THING is being discussed. The thing about the boy who refused to do the pledge to the flag went on for days. B-OR-I-N-G.
Souix Falls, SD (XM)
I love this show...invokes thought!
Medford, OR (Sirius)
Love the show. We use to live in WeHo and know we live in a much smaller town and just love the quality of the show.
Ocala, FL (Sirius)
I think you should ask if your listeners are in a relationship and how long.
Toronto, ON Canada (XM)
I am disappointed in the lack of issues from Canada, however as I reflect on what those issues would be, there are not a lot. It also makes us appreciate everything that we have & take for granted that our human rights have been respected while government of all stripes south of us continually try to repress what are basic human rights & respect. Keep up the great work Mike!!
Portland ME (XM)
I was listening to the discussion about sexual harassment the other afternoon and have a completely different take on the discussion. I wish I had called in but didn't get the chance. I was unjustly accused of sexual harassment 4 years ago and it put my life into hell for a year and a half. I quit the job I was planning on retiring from, it ended up costing me $5K in legal fees defending myself, my professional license and my reputation. As it turns out I now have a better job and and stronger but my cynical in my outlook. I have lost a lot of my sense of trust that if you do the right thing you have nothing to worry about. Love the show, thanks for fighting the good fight.
Mermann MO, (XM)
I've had issues with you and the show in the past. However, I find myself compelled to listen and the more I do, the more I appreciate your show. I won't call in anymore because when I have in the past I've always felt like I was dismissed and unappreciated. That's probably because I stutter and am from a very small town and have a southern accent. Never-the-less, your show has grown on me and I listen just about every day. I don't always agree with you, nor do I always like how you handle yourself, but do know that I am most appreciative of what you all do and I am so pleased that you all provide interesting and important insight into LGBT issues as well as other interesting news items. I've been pissed off with you in the past - not so much because of your views, but because of the way you state them. I think it must be a cultural thing and I'm getting over that.
San Dimas, CA (XM)
We enjoy you enormously and are always impressed at your unflappability and even temper when faced with the vilest contrarian. Congratulations.
Austin, TX (Sirius)
I love your show and I have learned a lot. I have become much more politically involved with LGBT issues. 4:30pm EST - What effect does same-sex marriage have on children? Is not having a mother and a father in the house ruining child developement? Judith Stacey, professor of social and cultural analysis at New York University, says in USA Today, "It's more about the quality of the parenting than the gender of the parents." (Rescheduled from earlier in the week) 3:30pm EST - Natalie O'Neill, staff writer for the Miami New Times, join us this afternoon to talk about a recent article she'd written, Gays leave unfriendly South Beach for Fort Lauderdale, which focuses on the rise of hate crimes against gay men in Miami and that many in the LGBT community are looking 25 miles north to Fort Lauderdale, where she says, "gay entertainers find work more easily, queer yuppies can afford spacious homes, and transgender ladies feel safer walking to the corner store. South Beach, they explain, has grown tense."

While discussing the outcome of the Massachusetts Senate election, Tony from Massachusetts called in to the show to explain why he, as a gay man, voted for -- and campaigned for -- the antigay Scott Brown, a man who opposes repealing "don't ask, don't tell," opposes the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, supports the Defense of Marriage Act and voted more than once in Massachusetts in the state legislature for a constitutional amendment to ban gays and lesbians from marrying.
There were no exit polls in the race, so it's impossible to know how many LGBT people may have voted for Brown. On my Facebook page one listener had said on election night that he knew several gay men who voted for Brown, so that prompted me to ask on the show for Brown supporters to call in. Tony was one of a few who did.

4:30pm EST - David Cruz, constitutional law professor at the University of Southern California, joins us this afternoon to talk about an article I had mentioned on the show yesterday, Gay marriage supporters fear Supreme Court's ruling was an omen, regarding the US Supreme Court's decision to deny recording the Prop 8 hearings. He says the decision "suggests the majority has a very strong sympathy for Prop. 8's supporters." He'll tell us why and why this may be an omen for the outcome of this overall case.

Joining us this afternoon is Dee Dee Edmundson, political director of Mass Equality, to talk about the statement the group released yesterday, saying the National Organization for Marriage has been making robo-calls to the voters in Massachusetts, "urging them to defeat 'radical' Martha Coakley because of her support of same-sex marriage."

Saturday Back Talk
Listener survey comments I read on the show this week. If you're a listener to the show and haven't taken the survey, please do so by scrolling down and clicking through on the right. Thanks!
Omaha, NE (Sirius)
I'm a big fan of the show & listen often. I love that your show highlights not only big news stories, but also stories that you can seldom find elsewhere in the media. Love the interviews, caller discussions, & debates. You get so much criticism for cutting callers off or being rude. Hello, people...it's called DEBATE! I think your back and forth conversations with your listeners are always respectful and on target. Keep up the great work. PS--great meeting you and David G in DC at the Helix Lounge.
San Francisco, CA (Sirius)
All-in-all, love the show. Have been a listener since the beginning, usually get to hear all 4 hours. It's great to be able to spend the whole afternoon discussing all topics of the day and of our community. Pet peeves: "Clips of the Week" I don't like, but know many do, how 'bout a compromise; last 5 minutes of the show, that way those of us who don't like can just tune out, the others can stay for their enjoyment. Pet peeve 2: Mike. your voice fades out quite often during the show, I find myself turning up the radio and than being blasted when a commercial comes on. David G, can't you throw something at Mike to correct this...maybe a slight current in his chair would help - you could push a button on your panel when he starts to fade away! :)
Las Vegas, NV (Sirius)
Great show! Thanks! Keep up the great work! What I don't catch on the radio, I follow on facebook. Didn't realize Associate Producer was so hot! Grrrr!
Covington, VA (XM)
I absolutely love the Michelangelo Signorile Show. Mr. Signorile is a fabulous host because he is willing to examine all sides of the issues and he does not cut off reasonable dissenters. I really enjoy Mr. Signorile's witty and usually accurate commentary. I'd also like to add that I absolutely love the opening theme thing, and that it always cheers me up to hear it.
Loiusville, KY (XM)
Overall it is great show. The only thing that bothers me is the way Michelangelo stereotypes Southerners. There are many people who live in southern states with progressive attitudes and beliefs.
Akron, OH (XM)
Michelangelo, I'd like to take a minute to let you know I think you're one of the best talk show hosts I've ever heard. Your so intelligent and well rounded. I have personally become a more balanced, informed individual. I can't believe how you can interview someone with an open mind and allow yourself to step back and take a full view of the complete issue. I think you are more than fair and I have never heard you cut off a guest unless they are just going in circles. Even when you have some real idiots on your show. You remain so professional and I love when you realize that you cannot agree with a guest you kindly say we agree to disagree. I will go as far as to say you are easily the most intelligent interviewer I've ever heard! I think you should be made president! Or at least be the main person in charge of our movement.
Dallas, TX (Sirius)
Need to up your game. Insight is a little intellectually sloppy. Think TRMS.
Sacramento, CA (XM)
I was very glad to accidentally find your show on my XM car radio. I have a 54 year old son who was able to marry his boyfriend of 30 years last year in California. It is so nice to be able to call his husband my son-in-law. I like your show because it makes me laugh - some times - and also make me cry - it keeps me thinking about what my kid and his husband go through.
Rochester, NY (Sirius)
I have a 22yr. old gay son, and a 22yr. old lesbian niece who's like a daughter. I'd like to hear more about the challenges of GLBTI youth and young adults.
Indianapolis, IN (XM)
As a hetero, I find the conversation very stimulating. You do not have to be lgbt to enjoy the program.
Avondale, AZ (Sirius)
I love it when you have FUN topics on and Michael cracks jokes, LAUGHS and shows he's got a sense of humor. I like LESS of his repeating himself 100 times on serious topics before/during/after taking listener or guest calls.
Mesa, AZ (XM)
Lose the "dogs of Portland" and "cell phone manners" type of filler that has been used in 2009. I find myself not only tuning these fluffy themes out on the live broadcast but also during the weekend repeats. Micheal continues to talk over the callers he disagrees with to the point of being annoying, bullying, and, rude. While I agree with most of Michael's views, his handling of the callers he disagrees with is unsettling during a lunch break.
Martinburg, WV (XM)
Michael, I really enjoy your show and regardless what some callers think or say, you DO give the other side a chance to explain their view. You are very skillful in engaging the individuals you interview and I have learn a lot from your show.
Ft McMurray AB Canada (XM)
LOVE LOVE LOVE this show.......you are amaze-balls and you are doing such a service to the LGBT community, I'm just another straight follower, "you can join us or you can get out of the way."
Lancaster, MA (Sirius)
I have become so much more educated, informed from listening to your show Michael. Thank you for all you do.
Calgary, AB Canada (Sirius)
I don't always agree with your political views but that's fine, we each have our opinions. I do like hearing an intelligent opposing view to that of my own. You do have to realize tho that Canadian politics vary greatly from the US. I do wish to say I love the research and knowledge of the subjects discussed, that you bring to the show Mr. Signorile. Thank you for a very excellent show every day.

Clips of the Week: "Common Humanity We Share"
Our Friday feature on the show, Clips of the Week: the dumb, sometimes smart -- mostly not -- things they said all week, all put to music this week our associate producer, Sean Bertollo. This week: "Common Humanity We Share"
Today's Show: Outrage Over Outrage
4:30pm EST - Outrage, the groundbreaking film about homophobia and politics, is out next week on DVD. Yesterday, we spoke about GLAAD's recent award nominations for the past year in TV and film, but one documentary didn't seem to make the list was Outrage, a documentary that held many of our elected officials feet to the fire when it came to lobbying for anti-gay legislation in the U.S. I've invited Kirby Dick, the director of the documentary Outrage, which comes to DVD this Tuesday, to speak the features he's added for the films' release, including a panel discussion with me and Larry Kramer and the late Rodger McFarlane on the film. And I'll ask him about GLAAD's ommission..

Today's Show: What's up with DADT Repeal?
3:30pm EST - Over the course of the week we've been talking about "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," and the rumors coming out of DC on whether or not we will see repeal this year. Sam Stein of the Huffington Post wrote a piece this week saying Congress and the White House are moving to put the repeal on the Defense Authorization Bill, while the Servicemembers Legal Defense Network has released a letter calling for the president to take action and lead the way on repealing DADT, and a Pentagon document was released that claimed Admiral Mullen's legal counsel believes DADT should wait, that "now is not the time." Joining us this afternoon is the executive director of the SLDN, Aubrey Sarvis, to discuss the reality of the repeal and if the White House has responded to their message.
