Saturday Back Talk

These are some of the listener survey comments I read on the show this week. If you're a listener to the show and haven't taken the survey please do so by scrolling down on the right and clicking through. Thanks!

Lee, IL, Sirius

Sirius/XM Sat came with my new Ford so I am new to the Sat radio universe. I do enjoy the variety of programming. Out of curiosity I checked into OutQ from my programming guide and found your show on my drive home from work. Being straight but gay friendly (one brother-now deceased-was gay) I really enjoyed your show. I never really knew too much about the issues my brother lived with day to day and your show gives me a window on his life and what he had to deal with. You cover issues from a perspective that the mainstream news just does not do. Your interviews are the best though. I heard I think 2 interviews with Rep. Frank that were highly informative as well as entertaining. Your guest interviews are my favorite part of the show, and of course the callers are good as well.

Orlando, FL XM
On the two occasions I have called in, I was not able to finish my statement nor respond back to the host. Though I had disagreements with what he was saying, I hoped to get a chance to respond.

Las Vegas, NV Sirius
I called into the show recently, and as I was about to thank you and say 'goodbye,' you cut me off... and as I continued to listen, I realized that NO ONE gets to say goodbye to you, you cut off EVERY caller... now as I listen, it irritates me that you choose to do this, it comes off as controlling and unsociable. just sayin'.

Boulder City, NV (Sirius)
I have absolutely no problem with the bumper music. I don't really care much for it, either, figuring it was one of those gay things I don't get - but it was never a problem. Bumper music is just a few seconds in and out.

Pinedale, WY (Sirius)
I could give a shit what Tiger Woods does in bed or with who. Its none of my damn business. I bet the religious wingnuts are threatening him to runin his career if he didn't make amends for what he did. WHO GIVES A FUCK'N SHIT! I agree that religion is the problem of the world. All the wars of the world were religious based.

Milwaukee, WI (Sirius)
I love your show. I don't always agree with your opinion, but I always feel like you really do your homework and present the facts separate from your opinion. The only problem is that I can only listen to your show in short bits. The stories you present and the crazy people they are about really make my blood pressure rise! Still, I feel much more aware of how our community is affected by them and outraged that we, as a community, aren't doing more to combat those nut jobs.

Today's Show: When Killer Whales Attack

3:30pm EST - Yesterday, we spent some time speaking about the killer whale who killed a trainer at Sea World earlier this week, a whale that has been linked to two other deaths. What would cause this killer whale, an animal that wouldn't do so in its natural habitat, to attack a human? And when we hear of other animal attacks, why are these animals euthanized? Joining us this afternoon, Richard Ellis, Marine Conservationist at the American Museum of Natural History, to discuss what may have been going through the whales head.

Today's Show: Capitalism & The Jews

4:30pm EST - The success of Jewish people in banking and finance over centuries has often been used by anti-Semites to claim a global conspiracy. Author and historian Jerry Muller joins us this afternoon to talk about his book, Capitalism And The Jews, in which he explores how and why Jews and capitalism have a unique historical relationship, and how the success of Jews -- and the distorted interpretations of it -- has fueled anti-semitism.

4:30pm EST - We've heard a lot of people speak for the rights of the LGBT community, from actors and singers to politicians and pundits. But what about sports figures? Today's Show: Feds Tracking Your Cell Phone

4:30pm EST - We've seen the detective shows, where the police think they have zeroed in on the criminal but need to tap their phone for that final proof. What do they do? Get a warrant! But what if the police want to locate the position of a suspect, using GPS to find someone via his or her cell phone? Do they need a warrant for that? According to the Obama administration, no, because Americans enjoy no "reasonable expectation of privacy." What could that mean for average citizen? Joining us this afternoon to discuss whether this is an invasion of privacy, Mariko Hirose, legal fellow with the ACLU First Amendment Working Group.

Today's Show: An Act Of Terror?

3:30pm EST - Was Joseph Andrew Stack's horrific action last week, crashing a plane into an IRS building and killing himself and two others, an example of terrorism? The media and government have been reluctant to call it that, and it's been a big topic of discussion and debate on the show. We've invited Mark Potok, director of the Intelligence Project at the Southern Poverty Law Center, to explain why this should be deemed a terrorist attack and why, because, anti-government rhetoric, as Potok says, "the level of violence is reaching levels last seen during the 1990s."

Gay Obama Campaign Aide Defends President

Steve Hildebrand, former deputy campaign manager for Barack Obama's 2008 campaign, came on the show yesterday (audio clip below) to discuss the president's efforts on DADT, ENDA and other issues. As the closest openly gay person to Barack Obama during he political campaign, Hildebrand's comments on Obama's progress on LGBT right have carried a lot of weight. Hildebrand had criticized the president last year publicly on LGBT issues, and said he spoke with the president in the Oval Office at the time, expressing his views. But he later pulled back on his criticism, urging people to focus more on Congress, though appearing on the show several times throughout 2009 he has seemed to go back and forth.

This time, fresh from a meeting along with other LGBT leaders in the White House two weeks ago, he was back to defending the president against critics who have charged that, on DADT specifically, Obama has not taken leadership by publicly pushing Congress to vote on repeal this year even though he called for repeal during his State of the Union address.

Hildebrand's argument is not much different from other defenders: The president has done what he can on issues the president has the power to move on and is dealing with a Congress and, in this case a military, that has much opposition. Of course, none of the critics deny the opposition. That's been there for any president. The criticism is about how this president deals with the opposition. And we're surely not the only ones decrying Obama's often-naive style: Similar criticism is leveled at the president from progressives on a variety of issues, observing that this White House just doesn't forcefully take the lead in dealing with Congress. It doesn't help our cause to imagine it's not true.

Hildebrand describes a White House that is working hard and trying to change minds in Congress and in the military. It's evident from Admiral Mullen's words that the process has moved forward in that regard quite a bit. The idea, however, that Obama must build consensus to the point where every single general is on board -- and we see two generals yesterday expressing their irrational fears on repealing DADT, though they say they will dutifully follow orders -- is idealistic and indicative of a president who is indecisive and who loses opportunities in his grasp. If we don't move now on DADT repeal, the opposition will organize and win. As it is already, Democrats can very easily lose Congress this fall. Then a vote of any kind will not happen for years. On this, Steve Hildebrand says that the forecasts are too early and "a lot can happen in seven months."

The conversation was frustrating, in part because people like Hildebrand surely know the White House has not been on top of the political game -- even if the president's personal intentions are laudable -- and yet they're loathe to criticize the White House in any way. What we need is leadership all around, including from the Human Rights Campaign and people like Hildebrand -- which would include forthrightly speaking about how badly the administration is handling issues -- and yet what we often get is more loyalty to a political strategy that is flawed.

Today's Show: The Art of the Gab

4:30pm EST - Daniel Menaker joins us in studio to talk about his new book, A Good Talk: The Story and Skill of Conversation, where he discusses the origins of language and social talk, explains how good conversation works and considers the physical benefit of conversation and its indispensable place in our social, moral and political lives.

Today's Show: How "Kill the Gays" Bill is Really a "Kill Everyone" Bill

(Rescheduled from yesterday) 3:30pm EST - We've talked a lot on the show over the past few months about the Ugandan "Kill The Gay's Bill" and how this horrific, anti-gay legislation has been driving the Ugandan LGBT community underground. But does it affect more than the LGBT community? Rob Tisinai, editor of Wake Up Now Blog, takes a look at this bill and who it effects and joins us this afternoon to speak about what he has found when reading through this bill.

Today's Show: Will Obama Lead?

2:30pm EST - Steve Hildebrand is an openly gay Democratic political strategist, president of Hildebrand Strategies and a former deputy campaign manager for Barack Obama during the 2008 campaign -- the closest gay advisor to the man who would be president. Last summer Hildebrand garnered much attention after he publicly criticized the White House for dragging its feet on LGBT rights and for producing the antigay DOMA brief.

But Hildebrand soon thereafter appeared to pull back. He said that the president got the message after a meeting Hildebrand had with him in the Oval Office and that he had faith things would move along more quickly. Months later many believe the president continues to move too slowly, however, and that DADT repeal will be lost if the White House doesn't lead on a vote this year for repeal. Where Hildebrand stands now is something we'll find out today, as he will join me in studio.

Today's Show: A Way Forward on DADT

4:30pm EST - In an interview with NY Daily News, Senator Joe Lieberman of Connecticut says he announce that he plans on taking a lead on legislation to pass a bill that will repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell." The big question is: Is the White House leading the effort and will it call for the vote to be added to the Defense Authorization bill or is Lieberman going on his own, with a stand-alone bill that will have a tough chance of passing?

Servicemembers United executive director Alexander Nicholson, a former U.S. Army Human Intelligence Collector who was discharged under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" will join me to talk about the plan his group has laid out, including a timetable, for how the President and the Congress can and should proceed on DADT.. He joins us this afternoon.

Saturday Back Talk

These are some of this week's listener survey comments, some of which I read on the show. If you're a listener to the show and haven't taken the survey please do so by scrolling down and clicking through on the right. Thanks!

Lake Hopatcong, NJ (Sirius)
Michelangelo is the only source for gay news. Without him I would not know what is happening in the world of gay rights. He brings gay news to the forefront. We would never get this news from mainstream media.

Simi Valley, CA (Sirius)
What draws me to your program is the timely subject matter, as well as the listeners who weigh in on topics with passionate veiwpoints. I feel there is way too much apathy around and a lot of uninformed people -this is a breath of fresh air for me. Sometimes it does get a little too intense for me and I have to change the station for a few minutes or turn the volume down for a breather, but I always come back. I enjoy listening to your show because while I don't always agree with you, I love what you bring to the table - keep up the good work.

Palm Desert, CA (XM)
Please play less jarring intro/transition music. Not all of your listeners are 22 year olds who enjoy having their ears blasted off.

North Port, FL (Sirius)
My name is Ron and I'm a new listener. My partner has been listening for a while now. I listen to you in my car on the hour ride home from work and an hour of the repeat on my way to work. I can't believe how clueless to the world around me I have become, living in my own little world with my partner in this little town. When I lived in Orlando I was involved with our community. Now I'm listening and now I'm getting mad. I can't believe what is being said and done in order to deny us the rights we deserve and need. Because now that I'm listening again to whats going on, the motivation to get involved is returning. You are empowering.

Yellowstone National Park, WY (Sirius)
Am in Yellowstone National Park (Employee Colony -- can't live here unless you work here). 80/20 on agreement, but still love your show, maybe if I ever can get thru on the phone I will call in.

Denver, CO (XM)
Thanks for covering things that aren't covered on any other outlet. I wish the transgender community would be more vocal in the LGBT community so we could get more respect.

Atlanta, GA (XM)
I have learned so much form listening to the show about what is happening politically. I think the show is very timely and informative about gay issues. I also enjoy the lighter stuff towards the end of the week. I wish he would talk a little faster once in a while. He seems to go on and on at times.

West Milford, NJ (Sirius)
There is no show like it for our community. It is the best and i absolutely love it. I honestly wouldn't change a thing. I think you are extremely fair and are terrific at debating not only the guests but also the callers with all different angles on the topics. Keep up the good work, i think you're terrific.

Clips of the Week: "Trying to Rewrite History"

Our Friday feature on the show, Clips of the Week: the dumb, sometimes smart -- mostly not -- things they said all week, all put to music by our producer David Guggenheim. This week: “Trying to Rewrite History”

Today's Show: Gaycons Debut at CPAC

4:30pm EST - Yesterday began the annual three day Conservative Political Action Committee (CPAC) conference in Washington, with many of the hypocritcal, right-wing gas bags showing up, spewing the same old misleading talking points and taking below-the-belt jabs at the president. Among the crowd at the conference this year was something new, however. GOProud, the group that represents gay conservatives, is a co-sponsor of the conference, which had several right-wing groups threatening (but not following through on) a boycott. Christopher Barron, chairman of the GOProud board, will join us this afternoon to speak about the groups appearance at CPAC.

Today's Show: Malawi Launches Hunt On Gays

3:30pm EST - Over the past few months, we've been covering the news of the "Kill The Gays Bill" coming out of Uganda and how the religious right in the US has had a huge influence in the developement of this legislation. The anti-gay rhetoric and brutality has spread to other countries in Africa, when in December we saw a gay couple in Malawi was arrested for holding a wedding ceremony. Now, police in Malaw are arresting high profile gays and lesbians in what seems like a witch hunt. Covering this is David Smith, The Guardian's Africa correspondent, and joins us today to talk about the arrests and what the police are saying to justify this.

Today's Show: Who Will Replace Evan Bayh?

3:30pm EST - Earlier this week, Sen. Evan Bayh of Indiana announced his retirement from the Senate, right before the deadline to put in nominees for the primary. With this news, many are wondering who the Democrats will back as their nominee for the open Senate seat. One of the names on the short list is Indiana Congressman Brad Ellsworth. According to an article in HuffPost today, Bil Browning, editor-in-chief of The Bilerico Project, say, "An Ellsworth candidacy has lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Hoosiers worried." He joins us this afternoon to explain why.

Today's Show: Muzzling Speech in Name of Fighting Terror

4:30pm EST The Supreme Court is hearing a case that pits free speech against fighting terrorism. Ralph Fertig, a civil rights lawyer with the Humanitarian Law Project, believes that every group is entitled to "peaceful resolutions of their conflicts," and in that spirit wants to help a Kurdish group the U.S. government charges has engaged in terrorism. But American law currently bans Fertig from doing so, in what critics contend is a McCarthyistic muzzling of free speech and freedom of association.

Shane Kadidal is a senior managing attorney at the Center for Constitutional Rights and co-counsel for Mr. Fertig. Their position: "[T]he case concerned speech protected by the First Amendment 'promoting lawful, nonviolent activities,' including 'human rights advocacy and peacemaking.'" He joins us this afternoon to talk about it.

Listen: Demanding Action on DADT

Today on the show I read Nathaniel Frank's hard--hitting and important piece charging President Obama and the Human Rights Campaign with stalling on repeal of "don't ask, don't tell." We took calls from many people who were responding to the blog swarm and also the general criticism of HRC. Some of them were long-time members and donors to the group. Some had become fed up even before the blog swarm.

One of them was Earl in St. Petersburg, Florida, who last week decided to stop giving his automatic payment of $250 per month to the group because of HRC's inaction in taking on the White House. The blog swarm only confirmed for him that he made the right decision. Below is a clip from his call today.

Today's Show: Examining The Body Scanners

4:30pm EST - A topic we have covered with you several times since the Christmas Day attack is whether or not we should put body scanners in our airports to prevent further terrorists attacks. Christopher Calabrese, ACLU Legislative Council for Technology, joins us today to talk about why these scanners are an invasion of our rights and why this maybe an overraction by our government.

Today's Show: Obama's Nuclear Plan

3:30pm EST - Yesterday, President Obama made an announcement in Lanham, MD, throwing support about developing nuclear energy as an alternate energy source in the US, a first in thirty years. Joining us today to talk about the safety concerns , the risky financial investment and the effectiveness of the president's decision is Kate Sheppard, energy writer with Mother Jones, who outlines the cost of the presiden't decision in her latest article, Obama's Nuclear Boondoggle.

4:30pm EST - Confidential was the first magazine to brazenly "Tell the Facts and Name the Names," when it first hit newstands in December 1952, promising "uncensored and off the record" reporting. In Shocking True Story: The Rise and Fall of Confidential, "America's Most Scandalous Scandal Magazine," Henry Scott turns the tables on one of America's most sensational magazines and delivers the never-before-told tale behind the scened of Confidential and joins us this afternoon to talk about it.

Back live today after the holiday break and today kicking off a campaign on the show, along with many LGBT bloggers and opinionmakers in a blog swarm, urging people to call the Human Rights Campaign, the nation's largest gay group, and tell the group to pressure President Obama on getting "don't ask, don't tell" repealed this year.

As you know, the president said in his state of the union that he'd "work to repeal" DADT "this year," and Defense Secretary Gates and Admiral Mullen backed repeal but announced yet another study, which will take a year.

We do not have a year to wait and there is no need for another study. Democrats and supporters of repeal will lose seats this fall. We have momentum now, but it is being lost and there is no leadership on repealing the policy now. And if it is not repealed now it may be years away. There is no reason why, as Barney Frank as said, and as I and other opinion makers have stated, that we cannot have a vote now. The repeal can be pending the completion of the study. The repeal can be added as an amendment onto the Defense Authorization bill. It will be summer by the time that is voted on, and the study completion will then be just a few months away.

We must have a vote before the fall, but the Democratic-controlled Congress doesn't move on anything without leadership from the Democratic president. The White House has been vague, saying it is waiting until Congress passes a bill. That's unacceptable. We need leadership from the president.

The Human Rights Campaign, largest LGBT group in the country, has been muted on the issue and had refrained from demanding action from the president. The group has tried to shift all responsibility to Congress while praising the president for his words. And even Congress seems to be getting some leeway. HRC hasn't been opposed to a vote now, but hasn't lobbied this president strongly and publicly. to push Congressional leaders. On my radio program a few weeks ago, HRC's Joe Solmonese expressed support for a vote now, but also seemed to imply that what we're likely to get is a vote in the House this year, no vote in the Senate until next year. That is not acceptable.

We need HRC publicly calling on the president -- through an open letter perhaps, given to a major newspaper for publication, so as to have impact -- to take the lead on repealing DADT this year, to push Congress to vote now. As Americanblog notes Just last week, the AFL-CIO was forced to send an action alert to its members, targeting the White House. If it's good enough for the unions, it's good enough for us:

We truly believe that if HRC were to openly call on the White House to get DADT repealed this year, it would happen. Mostly because Democrats are rightly worried about the gay vote (and the support of our straight allies) months before a critical congressional election.

Contact HRC today urge the group to publicly demand that the President take the lead in getting DADT repealed this year. That means taking the lead in making sure Congress votes, not just throwing it to Congress and waiting for it to act.

I will be discussing this on the show, taking calls and asking listeners to call HRC. I will also ask you to call back and let us know what they say.

If HRC tells you that the group has backed the idea of a vote, or has stated it publicly, you have to be clear: You want a strong public statement, in an open letter, directed specifically at the President to take the lead on a repeal vote this year, not just a study. Of course, be polite. HRC is working for LGBT rights, we just disagree right now with their reticence. And since they are representing us we're letting them know how they should be doing so, how they should be speaking more forcefully on our behalf.

Cue the Twilight Zone Music

Not sure what dimension blogger Gay Patriot lives in, but it's either a very warped reality or he's a lazy gay conservative, so zealous in his ideological pursuits, that he didn't actually watch the clip of my discussion on the Joy Behar Show before commenting on what I supposedly said, simply buying the claims of another wingnut site. Gay Patriot links to the ring-wing and often gay-unfriendly Newsbusters' spin on my appearance, which includes a truncated clip of my full appearance -- which isn't that long (three and half minutes) , but if they provided the entire clip it would have refuted their idiotic claims.

I didn't even remotely say that actress Anne Hathaway would be "sidelined" after announcing she was leaving the Catholic Church because of supposed conservatives in Hollywood. This is simply made up stuff. In fact, regarding Hathaway, I said her career would not be hurt at all and stressed that emphatically. The question where I answered about the "powers that be" having a problem -- the truncated clip used on Newsbusters -- was actually a question about gay stars in Hollywood and what would happen if they come out. I refuted the claims — made also by the other guest -- that the public couldn't handle it and that these start would be hurt. This has been my opinion for years. Anyone who has read my many articles and books on the subject, not to mention seeing my radio and television commentary, would know that.

I used Neil Patrick Harris as an example of someone who came out successfully. If Gay Patriot had watched the clip he'd not have in fact used Neil Patrick Harris as an example himself in trying to refute me because that would be very foolish since I did actually use Neil Patrick Harris. I went on to say that if anything is in the way of stars coming out it's not the public, which is underestimated, but the powers that be, which don't want to take risk, because money is always conservative.

Newsbusters took that statement and warped it into me saying Anne Hathaway will now be sidelined because of conservatives in Hollywood, and then mocked me for this ridiculous statement which I never said. Then Gay Patriot, in an example of pure hackwork, picked it up, clearly without watching the clip or, as I said, is simply living in another dimension. And now, cue that twilight zone music.

UPDATE: Gay Patriot wrote me to say that in fact he didn't watch the clip and that "if you bothered to read my blog, you'd note that I'm very busy this week," and thus he didn't get a chance to watch the clip and just trusted a wingnut web site. He then said he would correct his "error" but that I owe him an apology for "name-calling." In his updated post, he still claims I'm "wrong about conservatives" but I have no idea what he's talking about as I said nothing about conservatives, in Hollywood or out. I only said that "money is always conservative," meaning that Hollywood liberals among the powers that be in Hollywood may claim they support gay rights but then will not do so in the product, or the take a risk of having an actor come out. I would think a gay conservative would actually agree with me about the duplicity of Hollywood liberals. But I think he probably didn't have the guts to say I was completely right so created some red herring to claim he was partially right or some other silliness.

UPDATE II: Gay Patriot has now removed the post distorting my appearance, which is why the links above are dead, and has posted a new post explaining his "error" and why he removed the post. I certainly didn't ask him to do this. I'm not in favor of censoring these discussions and people should have seen what actually happened.

Saturday Back Talk

These are some of the listener survey comments that I read on the show this week. If you're a listener to the show and haven't taken the survey please do so by scrolling down on the right and clicking through. Thanks.

When your show comes on, after about two minutes I change the station. You are the gay equivalent of Glenn Beck. You use epithets all too frequently to belittle those who disagree with you - case in point - your references to those who belong to the TEA Party Movement. Tea Baggers is the term you use most frequently - and you usually follow it up with a an unflattering sexual reference. Not acceptable. What you are is a "Shock Jock". I'm doubtful that this will ever make it to your view comments. And, I'll never know if it does or not, I've stopped listening to your show.I do hope that you lose your "bully pulpit" and that you're replaced by someone who has the capability to carry on the important issues that we all face.

Pima, AZ (Sirius)

I caught the show by accident and have been listening for a couple months now. I probably don't fit any of your demographics, but I am here and I am listening. :)

Cincinnati, OH (XM)

When I got my car I signed up for XM. I was so pleasantly surprised to find your show. It keeps me up to date on all the national issues that concern our community. Since Cincinnati is a conservative city, it's nice to hear what is happening around the country. I just like the whole show. That's why I keep on listening! Keep it up!!! You're fantastic. Oh, I especially like the call in option on your show. It's great to hear people's opinions.

New York, NY and Los Angeles, CA (Sirius)
I have worked in the entertainment industry in New York & Los Angeles for almost 30 years. I was born and raised on a farm in deeply rural North Carolina. Within my family and among my parents' friends down there, I can list almost a dozen gay & lesbian individuals who are open about their sexuality. I often feel that Michael is inappropriately judgmental and/or dismissive of non-urban parts of the country and particularly the people who populate rural locales. For my part, I have yet to experience the kind of homophobia and fear in (my little corner) of NC that I have in the more sophisticated and enlightened communities that I traffic in elsewhere -- and I'm in show business! There are many folks who support and understand the LGBTIQ community beyond the bright city lights, Yankee Boy! :-)

Minneapolis, MN (XM)

I really appreciate the perspective that Michelangelo puts on the news and how it impacts the LGBT community.

New York, NY (Sirius)
Great show. I try to listen as often as possible during the day at my office. I especially enjoy Friday's show and the Clips of the Week. Keep up the great work!

Warwick, PA (Sirius)
Although I enjoy and agree with the political views of the program, I would often like a change of pace. The political end of things today for the LGBT community is so oppressive and depressing, that sometimes I just have to tune out to keep my sanity. I know you could cover any topic with the same passion, vision, and intelligence that you display in the political arena. Please just give it a try once in a while; not always; just as a brief respite from the important, albeit upsetting, political news that we NEED to hear. Whatever, please keep up the brilliant and courageous work that you do!

Gainesville, FL (XM)
Absolutely love the Michelangelo Signorile show -- he's smart, articulate and always makes sense! It's my favorite program on OutQ. The other day I was driving to South Florida, and I enjoyed listening to Michelangelo all the way down the Florida Turnpike for 4 hours!

Pinedale, WY (Sirius)
I watched "Outrage" over the weekend I was FUCK'N pissed. Not so much at the Republican politicians but the damn gay people that support then and do harm to the community. I am very angry at Dan Gurely (I believe that is his name). I am not only angry with what he did but I am more angry how he acted when he was interviewed...like he did nothing wrong. I am so angry with him.

Fort Garland, CO (XM)

Thank you for calling out Christianity and it's followers for the damage they have done to the GLBT community. If it was not for christian bigotry our community would have achieved equality years ago. Oh, and please stop engaging that starfucker Barney Frank, he is simply a mouthpiece for whatever administration needs coverage from the gay community. Useless!

Clips of the Week: "The Homosexuals"
