Today on the Signorile Show

The Sharron Angle interview we've all been waiting for -- an actual interview by an real journalist -- is up! And it's as good as we thought. Last week we went through all of The Republican Nevada Senate candidate's connections to a far-right extremists antigay party. Today we'll listen in to the interview.

Guest, 2:30 ET: Glenn Greenwald, Contributor, Salon.com, joins me to discussion the Kagan hearings and just what we are learning about the presumed next Supreme Court Justice.

Guest, 3:30 ET: James Sullivan, author of, “7 Dirty Words: The Life and Crimes of George Carlin”

Guest, 4:30: Harvey Klehr, Andrew W. Mellon Professor of Politics and History and expert on Soviet espionage will join me to talk about the Russian spy case -- 11 illegal, undercover operatives arrested this week -- that has captivated all of us and has a lot of people wondering why this is still going on.

The Scary Antigay Frankenstein Doctor: We'll get into the frightening story of a doctor in Florida who is treating pregnant with with a drug to stop lesbianism. What does this mean and should this even be legal? What is the end goal? We'll discuss today and take your calls.

Listen to The Michelangelo Signorile Show weekdays live from 2-6 pm ET on Sirius XM's OutQ: Sirius 109, XM 98 and on the Sirius XM iPhone app. Not a subscriber? Not a problem! Listen online any time with a free seven-day pass or, if you have an iPhone or Blackberry, go to the app store and download Sirius XM for free, for a 7-day trial, and listen on your phone.

Gay Genocide in America?

I know, it sounds extreme but hear me out: Towleroad points us in the direction of a post by Dan Savage about a doctor who is experimenting with a drug on pregnant women, trying to prevent lesbianism in girls in-utero, and also prevent "masculine" characteristics. The purpose is clearly to prevent homosexuality in women and as well as transgenderism and transexuality:

Pediatric endocrinologist Maria New—of the Mount Sinai School of Medicine and Florida International University—isn't just trying to prevent lesbianism by treating pregnant women with an experimental hormone. She's also trying to prevent the births of girls who display an "abnormal" disinterest in babies, don't want to play with girls' toys or become mothers, and whose "career preferences" are deemed to "masculine."

Dan links to an article at The Hastings Center's Bioethics Forum about this chilling experimentation:

The majority of researchers and clinicians interested in the use of prenatal “dex” focus on preventing development of ambiguous genitalia in girls with CAH. CAH results in an excess of androgens prenatally, and this can lead to a “masculinizing” of a female fetus’s genitals. One group of researchers, however, seems to be suggesting that prenatal dex also might prevent affected girls from turning out to be homosexual or bisexual.

On on the show on Monday of this week I interviewed James Madison University researcher Christine Robinson, co-author of a study published in the April edition of the journal Genocide and Prevention, titled Genocidal Intentions: Social Death and the Ex-Gay Movement. Her provocative conclusion is that the so-called "ex-gay" movement's promotion of its beliefs and policies constitutes genocide under the Untied Nations Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide. It sounds far-fetched but several writers and activists who study the ex-gay movement, after speaking with Dr. Robinson or reading her study, came away impressed with her findings, as was I when she came on the show. She shows how genocide begins with intent to demonize a group -- not with mass killing -- and that there are many steps that need to be in place and which are predictors of genocide, under the U.N> convention, and which the U.N. convention sees as indicators that should be used for prevention.

Surely, the "ex-gay" movement is trying to stop homosexuality and certainly demonizes gays. And I would think that the work of Dr. Maria New would be seen as genocide under the U.N. convention, using the conclusions of Robinson's study: Dr. New is not only trying to eradicate homosexuality amd female-to-male transgenderism; she is experimenting on humans with a dangerous drug, all in the service of this extermination, a frightening throwback to the Nazi regime. The ultimate goal of doctors like her is to make homosexuals and those who do not fit gender norms disappear entirely. That is surely "social death" as Christine Robinson describes it.

Today on the Signorile Show

Republicans used the opening of the hearings on Elena Kagan's nomination to the Supreme Court by trashing the late Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. We'll go over that and the other highlights and low blows from day one and now, day two.

A battle inside the Vatican, The New York Times reports, "between those who seek reform...against those who want to preserve the existing power structure." This on the heels of U.S. Supreme Court's surprising refusal to hear the Vatican's appeal re: international jurisdiction, which will now allow sex abuse victims to sue the Vatican and depose the Pope. We'll discuss.

BP now has a back-up plan to the building and installing of the relief well to stop the oil gusher in the Gulf -- which itself was supposed to be ultimate back-up plan. Does this mean they expect that even installing the relief well may not work? We'll get into it.

Yesterday, we talked about the CNN "Reliable Sources" appearance of Rolling Stone's Michael Hastings, who of course wrote the article that led to the resignation of General McChrystal. I noted that he confirmed an observation I made last week regarding why it took Rolling Stone to write this story: reporters from the the major news orgs -- the networks, the Times, the Washington Post, etc -- are loathe to report anything damaging about subjects like McChrystal because they're afraid of losing access and are probably likely to clean up quotes. CBS's Lara Logan went on the same show after Hastings, and basically trashed him and his reporting while defending the way she and her corporate media colleagues do it. Rolling Stone's Matt Taibbi gives us a spot-on analysis of Logan's defense. We'll get further into it today.

And how could we not talk about the Russian spy story? Did any of you think this kind of thing was still going on?

Guests: Rod McCullom will join mee to discuss recent comments on The View made by D.L. Hughley and Sherri Shepherd and ABC's refusal to apologize. And Glenn Greenwald joins me to discuss the Kagan nomination hearings. Times for both not confirmed yet. Update: Glenn Greenwald will be on at 3:30 ET, Rod McCollum at 4:30 ET.

Did Queen Latifah come out at the BET Awards? This just gets to more of the silliness and hypocrisy that Pam Spaulding pointed out yesterday, which we discussed on the show.

And...will Senator Byrd's successor support DADT repeal? We'll discuss.

All that and more!

Vatican Power Struggle

Interesting story in NY Times today about a power struggle inside the Vatican between those who want reform and those who want to keep the church in the Middle Ages. We get a glimpse of it through a letter rebuking a cardinal. It's encouraging because, frankly, I thought there were no real voices of reform to speak of, let alone a power struggle, in the Vatican.

This comes on the heels of the news that the Supreme Court refused to hear an appeal by the Vatican to keep abuse victims from directly suing the Vatican and the Pope, even deposing him. We had attorney Jeff Anderson on the show a few months ago about this, and his case seemed like a long-shot at the Supreme Court, which many legal experts expected would defer to international jurisdiction, since the Vatican is a state. But that was not the case, another interesting surprise. The Vatican now vows to prove in court that it should not be liable for sex abuse by priests. This will be fascinating to watch: How can the Pope on one hand apologize, while on the other hand vigorously defend the Vatican in court from being in any way responsible?

Today on the Signorile Show

The hearings are underway today for Elena Kagan's Supreme Court nomination and opening remarks by the senators are already showing the Republicans attacking the Supreme Court Justice nominee. Their bluster aside, a lot of us have questions for Kagan and we'll be going through some of what should be asked of the nominee on the show today.

Speaking of the Supreme Court, in another landmark, reckless 5-4 ruling, the court has potentially thrown out gun laws in many states, a decision that will inspire more lawsuits and could inspire more gun ownership among many Americans -- and more gun violence. We'll talk about the issues.

And in another important 5-4 ruling for LGBT Americans, the Court's liberals, with Justice Kennedy as the swing vote, ruled that Christian groups on campus can't ban gays while taking funding from a university. It's an important case in which the rights of a minority (and not fostering discrimination) trump religious freedom. What does it mean as well for the historic same-sex marriage case that is heading its way to the Supreme Court in which Justice Kennedy is expected to be pivotal? We'll get into all of it.

Guest 3:30 ET: Does the "ex-gay" movement's policies promote "social death" and thus "genocide" of gay, lesbian, and bisexual people in society under the United Nations Convention on the Prevention of the Crime of Genocide? That is what a new study concludes and we'll be joined by co-author of the study, Christine Robinson, Associate Professor of Justice Studies at James Madison University in Virgina.

Guest 4:30 ET: What ways did gay and lesbian activists educate themselves and the gay and straight populations regarding safer sex in the face of the brutal and negligent government policies against funding safer sex eduction? And how is that continuing today? Filmmaker Jean Carlomusto joins us to talk about her film, Sex in an Epidemic.

Lots of laws are being passed to fight bullying in schools. But should the battle extend online, and what would that mean for Internet privacy? The New York Times reports that one recent study by the Cyberbullying Research Center, an organization founded by two criminologist who defined bullying as "willful and repeated harm” inflicted through phones and computers, "said one in five middle-school students had been affected." What to do? We'll take your calls.

What does West Virgina Democratic Senator Robert Byrd's death early this morning at the age of 92 mean for Democrats in the Senate. We'll explain.

Queen Latifah once again says she won't talk about her so-called private life even as she opens up for a magazine interview -- just don't ask the gay question. Pam Spaulding takes issue, and so do we. Your thoughts? We'll discuss.

Who is Storme DeLarverie?

If you don't know who Storme DeLarverie is, you should read this article in The New York Times about the Stonewall veteran, now 89 and suffering from dementia. Her life and story are something we must not forget as we celebrate Gay Pride and LGBT history this month across the country, over 40 years since Stonewall:

Ms. DeLarverie fought the police in 1969 at the historic riot at the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village that kicked off the gay rights movement. The first gay pride parade in 1970 was not a parade at all but a protest marking the one-year anniversary of the Stonewall uprising.

Some writers believe Ms. DeLarverie may have been the cross-dressing lesbian whose clubbing by the police was the catalyst for the riots (the woman has never been identified). While others are adamant that Ms. DeLarverie was not that woman, no one disputes that she was there, and no one doubts that the woman who had been fighting back all her life fought back in the summer of 1969.

It's sad, too, and frankly outrageous, the way that history is often forgotten and how these LGBT pioneers are sometimes just shoved away:

A small group of friends, including some of her neighbors at the Chelsea Hotel, visit her regularly. A social worker with the nonprofit group SAGE, which provides services to lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender older people, has been assisting Ms. DeLarverie since 1999, when she was at risk of eviction from the hotel.

Some of her friends said they had been frustrated by the way she was treated by the authorities and others, and they expressed disappointment that Ms. DeLarverie’s troubles have not been a widespread concern for many gay and lesbian activists.

“I feel like the gay community could have really rallied, but they didn’t,” said Lisa Cannistraci, a longtime friend of Ms. DeLarverie’s who is the owner of the lesbian bar Henrietta Hudson, where Ms. DeLarverie worked as a bouncer.

“The young gays and lesbians today have never heard of her,” Ms. Cannistraci said, “and most of our activists are young. They’re in their 20s and early 30s. The community that’s familiar with her is dwindling.”

Surely there is more we can do to honor Storme DeLarverie, starting with knowing that she refused to be treated as a second class citizen, stood up to authority and paved the way for all of us.

Weekend Back Talk

These are some of the listener survey comments from last week, some of which I read on the show. If you're a listener and haven't taken the survey please do so by scrolling down and clicking through on the right. Thanks!

Southlake, TX (XM)
Michael, how dare you assume that if someone has to get off the phone it is because they lost the argument. If someone comes to my office while I am talking I would have to respectfully say goodbye. Whenever someone doesn't agree with you, you start calling them names and assume that they are conservative even when they don't sound conservative. These are just bullying tactics and you are smart enough to not have to engage in these tactics. It will be interesting to see how you bash me if you choose to talk about this comment on air.

Huntington, NY (Sirius)
Both my partner and I listen to your show all the time and have been for several years. We have noticed recently that you have been getting very angry with the "cowards" that call and can't back up the claims they make about you or the subject at large, then hang up or say "gotta go". It's like a hit and run accident. We back you 101%. You should continue to get mad as hell at them with more verbal tantrums.

Raleigh, NC (Sirius)
The caller saying ALL PEOPLE IN THE ADMINISTRATION HATE THE MILITARY, obviously doesn't realize that Robert Gates is in the Administration, at least the last time I looked he was Secretary of Defense. He was pretty much ignorant as are a lot of the opposition to Mr. Obama and his administration.

Kansas City, MO (XM)
I have a bit of a bone to pick with you! You say 866-305-6887 SO much...Seriously it is all the time! It seems to have become your verbal pause and filler. What makes me angry (not actually angry but laughable angry) is when I was filling out my Out-of-Office Outlook message I typed out the OutQ number instead of my companies customer care number! You have the phone number stuck so far in my head that I can't get it out. The kicker is that I didn't realize I put the call-in number on my away message until my boss called my personal phone and was like "what the hell is this radio station you put on your away message?!" Blast you Mike! Good thing she caught it..(after 2 days). Anyway, the show is great and I very much enjoy the content. I wish we could see more of you on CNN or MSNBC.

Star City, AR (XM)
This show is one of the reasons that I have not yet canceled my XM subscription. The MSS is one of the few places that I can hear no-bullshit news about the LGBT community and not only that but Signorile is pro T* which is lacking from many white-gay males in the "gay media."

Denver, CO (XM)
Mike, I enjoy your show. But clearly you've crossed the line from journalist to commentator. I used to think you were fairly balanced but in the last 3 years you've moved completely to the role of instigator and dropped any semblance of impartiality. I first noticed it during the 2008 election cycle. Clearly you were supporting Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton. When Hillary would do something that was embarrassing to the Obama camp it was "Sleazy, scummy, vile, disgusting" but when Obama's camp would do something to embarrass Clinton it was "disingenuous, or silly". Go back and listen to the tapes. You have no journalistic integrity left, sir. And I am disappointed that you've continued to move from serious journalist to a parody of what was once a good show. Fortunately I've found Pete Dominick on Sirius XM's POTUS channel.

Jacksonville, FL (XM)
I love all the OutQ shows. It's so much fun to be inundated with Gay positivity while just driving to and from work. What I love most about your show in particular are the intense, in depth discussions.

Meade, KS (XM)
Michael, you make fun of serious people who write comments but I thought your discussion about the mosque at WTC was awful. How would you like it if a Catholic Church wanted to build a church where Matthew Shepard was murder and I don't even think that the murders were Catholic. Yes Not all Muslims are bad people just like not all Catholic people are bad people but building a church on scared ground that goes against everything that is scared about that ground is just wrong. You say you listen to your callers but you don't really. All you do is argue with them and try to make them look like idiots. Just because we don't agree with you doesn't make us idiots.

Ridgefield, CT (XM)
Michelangelo ROCKS! I love that he isn't afraid to be serious or to get into detail about news stories or political issues. I also love that he respectfully but assertively stands up to guests who strongly disagree with him and/or criticize him. I don't always agree with him myself (such as, recently, on immigration and pedophiles), but I still appreciate his articulateness and ability to present information in an engaging and educational way. He seems immune to fashion and the pressure to be "entertaining" (read: mindlessly pandering to the lowest common denominator and insulting the audience's intelligence) or the typical plastic, fake, numbingly middle-of-the-road talking head one sees pretty much everywhere else on TV, radio and the mainstream press. Love the stuff on environmental issues even tho it isn't specifically LGBT-oriented. No real suggestions or requests except "More of the same, please!"

St. Petersburg, FL (Sirius)
I'm glad you pronounce the letter "H" now or that you have at least made an effort to do so. The one positive thing to say is that you give us information and discussion we cannot find anywhere else and you do not let people get away without answering your questions. The one negative thing I would say is you sometimes drone on with excruciating detail over the minutia of a story leading to tangents that require breadcrumbs to once again find the original purpose of your comment(s). Love the show, warts and all.

Today on the Signorile Show

We've seen the devastation caused by the BP Gusher at the bottom of the Gulf of Mexico to the coast habitats and animals. Earlier this week, news broke showing that the burning of the oil in the Gulf is killing a high percentage of endangered sea turtles. And the people who are trying to save these turtles have been blocked by BP, who are stopping boats from their rescue efforts. Reports show that more and more areas and wildlife are being threatened. We'll get into the devastation today.

Sharon Angle, Nevada Tea Party-backed Republican candidate for the Senate, has a long antigay history. We'll get into her vitriolic anti-gay past this afternoon.

Guest / 3:30pm EST - Richard Socarides joins us this afternoon to talk about his article in the Wall Street Journal regarding the the president and the LGBT community, where he says, "despite a steady trickle of of small steps Mr. Obama has taken to promote gay rights, on the big issues, he's a disappointment." He'll explain why today.

Last night, CNN aired its documentary, In America: Gary and Tony Have a Baby. While it is great that CNN focused programing on some of the struggles the LGBT community face, many felt the documentary didn't do its best to represent the community, because Gary and Tony are privileged -- spent 160K for the baby, through in-vitro and surrogacy, rather than adoption -- which may have made it easier for them to have a child. They represent only a handful of gay male parents in that regard. Others didn't like the focus on assimilation as the kick-off to the Gay in America series. Did you see it? We'll get your thoughts today.

Will humans be extinct in 100 years? That's the question Ian O'Neill asks on Discovery. O'Neill spoke with many scientists across the globe and many feel our species is doomed. One scientist from Australia tells him, "We're going to become extinct. Whatever we do now is too late." Is it really too late for the human race? We'll discuss this as well.

It's Friday, so we'll be giving out of "Angel, Turkey, Gassie and Climax of the Week!" Who do you think deserves an award? Let Mike know on Twitter and Facebook! (If you already follow Mike, be sure to follow my tweets too!)

All these stories and so much more, today on The Michelangelo Signorile Show!

Listen to The Michelangelo Signorile Show weekdays live from 2-6 pm ET on Sirius XM's OutQ: Sirius 109, XM 98 and on the Sirius XM iPhone app. Not a subscriber? Not a problem! Socarides Blasts Obama on LGBT Rights

Former Clinton gay adviser Richard Socarides has a Wall Street Journal op-ed looking at the president's promises, what he said at the White House cocktail reception this week and what he's not followed through on. I hit on just about every one of these issues on the show this week when we reviewed the president's speech, listening in to what he said. It bears repeating again and again, as the LGBT leaders in Washington just don't want to say it, seeming to only suck up to Obama further as he continually breaks his promises, and Richard is spot-on when he notes that Ted Olson is further along than President Obama:

Mr. Obama entered office with greater immediate challenges confronting him than most. But after eight years of benign neglect (at best) from Washington, and a campaign in which Mr. Obama promised to be our champion, gay Americans had good reason to expect more from this president, and now are understandably frustrated.

In a telling development, the most significant and aggressive legal effort to promote gay equality today is being led by a conservative, former U.S. Solicitor General Ted Olson. In federal court in San Francisco, together with co-counsel David Boies, he is prosecuting the most comprehensive and sophisticated legal attack on antigay marriage laws in history.

The Gay Angle on Angle

And it's not pretty. Sharon Angle, Nevada Tea Party-backed Republican candidate for the Senate, has a long antigay history. Talking Points Memo has the goods:

The far-right third party that Nevada GOP Senate candidate Sharron Angle called home in the 1990s supported abolishing "the debt money system" and ran a vitriolic anti-gay insert in state newspapers that portrays LGBT people -- or, as Angle's party called them, "sodomites" -- as child-molesting, HIV-carrying, Hell-bound freaks, according to documents obtained by TPM.

That far-right party Angle belonged to in the early 90s actually claims that gays are more likely to be murderers, that HIV can survive in water and that we need to bring back sodomy laws, citing an 1814 legal treatise titled "Consequences of Sodomy: Ruin of a Nation."

Today on the Signorile Show

In news that broke late this morning, The U.S. Supreme Court, in an 8-1 decision, ruled that names of those who sign antigay petitions must be made public. It's a ruling that could have a sweeping effect on the future of antigay ballot measures. We'll talk about it and speak at 4:30 ET with Charlene Strong, one of the activists in Washington state who helped to propel this forward.

Should BP, which is still trying to contain the gusher in the Gulf Coast, begin yet another drilling operation in Alaska? As Mike pointed out in a blog post last night, "BP is moving ahead with a controversial and potentially record-setting project to drill two miles under the sea and then six to eight miles horizontally to reach what is believed to be a 100-million-barrel reservoir of oil under federal waters." We'll discuss this afternoon.

Yesterday, we spoke about Tom Brock, a church pastor who had claimed a recent tornado was caused by God's wrath against homosexuality. He had been outed by a local gay publication, Lavender, as being an ex-gay in a "conversion therapy" program. Even though he has been outted, he is still able to keep his job, because of his involvement with the ex-gay movement in the church. We'll go through this story today.

We also spoke about President Obama's firing of Gen. Stanely McChrystal and announcing Gen. David Petraeus, McChrystal's boss and now former CENTCOM Commander, to take over operations in Afghanistan. The president made claims in his speech that because personnel changed, that doesn't mean we'll be changing policy. We'll talk about it today.

Can you believe what the America Family Association is doing now!? Currently, there are demanding that Lionel Jordan, the mayor of Fayetteville, Arkansas, pull support he has given for the NW Arkansas Pride Parade. And that's not the wost part. Will Phillips, the 10-year-old who refused to say the pledge, is Grand Marshall of the Parade. AFA is claiming that making Phillips Grand Marshall is a form of child abuse. We'll get into this one today!

Guest / 3:30pm EST - What's its like to go from having it all to complete self-destruction? Bill Clegg, literary agent and author of Portrait Of An Addict As A Young Man, joins us this afternoon to talk about how he had a supportive partner and thriving business when he walked away from his world to embark on a two month crack binge.

Guest / 4:30pm EST - The US Supreme Court has ruled that the names in a petition to overturn a gay rights law in Washington state are to be made public. Charlene Strong, one of the activists who helped bring the case forward.

Have you taken the Listener Survey yet? We'll go through some of them today as well.

All these stories and more, today on The Michelangelo Signorile Show!

Gay-hating Pastor Outed, Keeps Job

We talked a lot on the show yesterday about Tom Brock, church pastor in Minneapolis who said that a tornado there was God's wrath against homosexuality, and then was outed by a local gay publication , Lavender, after a reporter went undercover into a supposed 12-step "reparative therapy" program. A lot of discussion focused on the ethics of the reporter but there's no doubt this guy is a hypocrite and needed to be exposed. Well, now the church says he won't be booted because he is in the "ex-gay"cult trying to deal with his supposed "problem:"

Hope Lutheran's executive pastor, the Rev. Tom Parrish, said when confronted with the article, Brock "simply said he indeed has been attending this Christian group, both going there and being honest about temptations he has, and is being held accountable so he never would do anything with that temptation."

Parrish said Brock was put on leave from the job of senior pastor at Hope Lutheran when the article came out, but likely will return after an internal investigation.

"What they've done is unconscionable," Parrish said of Lavender's covert infiltration of Faith in Action. The group is the Minnesota affiliate of the Catholic Church's Courage program, described on its website as a "spiritual support system which would assist men and women with same-sex attractions in living chaste lives in fellowship, truth and love."

The discussion on the show, and the calls from many listeners, really convinced me this was the right thing to do and this is not any real, respected "12-step program" but a dangerous cult group whose entire premise is a lie. The man went out in public, to a group recognized by medical and mental health authorities (American Psychiatric Association, American Medical Association, American Psychological Association, etc.) not only as a fraud but also potentially harmful.

Most reporters, if they'd received a tip about the pastor from someone in such a program, would surely have tracked it down, seeing a story there, even if perhaps not going undercover in the program or using that as the sole sourcing or as anything but background. I personally would have gotten other sourcing -- people who had sex with the guy, for example -- but I can understand the reporter in this case, John Townsend, not seeing this as a 12-step program in line with those that help people with universally recognized problems such as alcohol and drug abuse. I'm even more convinced it was right after seeing the church's response, and hope the paper keeps up the reporting. Like every other deluded "ex-gay," this guy will never be straight and will surely be getting it on with a rentboy -- or someone else in the program.

UPDATE: You can watch Tom Brock's rant about the tornado being God's wrath on the gays below.

An Alaska "Replay" of Gulf Gusher?

Even as 60,000 barrels of oil still gushes from the bottom of the Gulf, BP is embarking a very risky Alaska adventure, that could result in a "replay" of what happened in the Gulf:

[A]bout three miles off the coast of Alaska, BP is moving ahead with a controversial and potentially record-setting project to drill two miles under the sea and then six to eight miles horizontally to reach what is believed to be a 100-million-barrel reservoir of oil under federal waters...

...The scientists and other critics say they are worried about a replay of the disaster in the Gulf of Mexico because the Liberty project involves a method of drilling called extended reach that experts say is more prone to the types of gas kicks that triggered the explosion on the Deepwater Horizon.

“It makes no sense,” said Rebecca Noblin, the Alaska director for the Center for Biological Diversity, an environmental watchdog group. “BP pushes the envelope in the gulf and ends up causing the moratorium. And now in the Arctic they are forging ahead again with untested technology, and as a result they’re the only ones left being allowed to drill there.”

Today on the Signorile Show

Today, "The Runaway General," Stanley McChrystal, is out. hHe met with President Obama and other officials in the administration to explain comments he made during an interview with Rolling Stone magazine. And then president announced he was relieved of his command. But did Obama miss an opportunity, once again, by not bringing in someone with a plan to end this war and chart a different course? What does it mean for the war that General Petraeus has been brought in? Did Obama make the right decision? We'll talk about the news coming out of the White House today.

Last night, the president had a reception for the LGBT community to celebrate Pride Month. He invited a lot of local LGBT groups and some special guests, including Constance McMillan, the Mississippi lesbian who had been banned from bringing her girlfriend to her prom. We'll go over what the president had to say at the event and the reaction from activists.

The BP Oil Gusher has dominated the news in one way or another. Yesterday, news broke that a judge had reversed the moratoriums on offshore oil drilling enacted by the White House. Today, we learn that judge has financial ties to the oil industry. We'll talk about the investments he has and the reaction from the White House to appeal this decision.

Guest / 4:30pm EST - Tomorrow night, CNN will premiere its documentary, In America: Gary and Tony Have A Baby, which follows this couple as they try to have a baby and form a family. Rose Arce is the producer of the documentary and joins us this afternoon to talk about their journey.

The New York State Senate has passed an anti-bullying bill which would protect LGBT students from harassment and discrimination. The Advocate says, "Governor David Paterson is expected to sign the bill into law, which would mark the first time gender identity and expression are included in state law."

We'll talk about these stories and so much more, today on The Michelangelo Signorile Show!

Gayest. "Ex-Gay." Ever.

Borrowing the headline from from Truth Wins Out, which is where we found this video -- much thanks! -- which we had so much fun with on the show today.I lnow many listeners had to pull over the side of the road laughing!

UPDATE: The Youtube clip is okay, but I just realized the clips we played on the show more, including with the "Jesus!"orgasm scream, are from the second clip here, which is different and is totally over-the-top insane!

President Obama plans to make an announcement that expands "the rights of gay workers by allowing them to take family and medical leave to care for sick or new-born children of same-sex partners" under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) of 1993. But how big is this? MetroWeekly points out the limits that once again are all because of the Defense of Marriage Act, which the Justice Department continues to vigorously defend. We'll talk about the FMLA and what this expansion means today.

General Stanely McChrystal, the top commander in Afghanistan, has been summoned to the White House over some outrageous comments he made criticizing the president and vice president regarding the war in Rolling Stone magazine. (One of his aides also characterized a dinner with the French as "fucking gay," as McChrystal and his aides seemed be unbridled in speaking with a reporter for the "Runaway General" article). Should Obama fire McChrystal? And will he? We'll go over the reaction from Washington and take your calls.

Guest / 4:30pm EST - Is the oil gusher unstoppable? Lisa Margonelli, director of the Energy Policy Initiative at the New America Foundation, joins us this afternoon to talk about this horrifying idea that has been discussed on the web a lot but which the government and BP seem not to want to touch.

We told you last week about a town in
Nebraska that wanted to introduce legislation that would prohibit employers from hiring and landlords from renting to undocumented immigrants. The town of Fremont has since voted on the measure and have passed the legislation. We'll review what is in this law.

Continuing on the immigration front, President Obama met with Arizona Republican Senator Jon Kyl to talk about solutions regarding illegal immigration. It is reported that both fought over what the best way to go about tougher border security for Arizona and the other border states. We'll go over what was discuss at yesterdays meeting today.

Wikileaks, the whistle blowing website that released the video of Reuters reporters and Iraqi civilians being killed by an airstrike, has announced it plans on releasing more video. According to the Washington Post, "Wikileaks.org plans to release as soon as this week documents related to a US airstrike that killed Afghan civilians last year and plans to release combat footage of the incident this summer." Many critics have made claims that this is a danger to our national security. We'll get your thoughts about this issue.

Today on the Signorile Show

It's the 63rd day of the BP Oil Leak off the Gulf Coast, and as the oil continues to gush, the attention is now turning to those who are helping BP fix this catastrophe. One of those people is Hilary Rosen, former interim director for HRC. Prior to working with BP, she had been a editor with Huffington Post, who let her go when they found that their heavy coverage of BP was in conflict of interest with her involvement with BP's own branding clean up. What do BP, its PR disaster and the LGBT Community have in common? We'll discuss this afternoon.

In the beginning, we heard 1,000 barrel of oil a day. Then 5,000. Then 12,000. Then 20,000. THEN 60,000. NOW, released documents from BP by Congressman Ed Markey, chairman on the House Energy and Commerce Committee, are showing that BP knew that if something were to go wrong with the Gulf Rigs, it could potentially spill 100,000 barrels per day! We'll talk about this document today.

Guest / 3:30pm EST - There has been a lot of discussion as to what happened in 2008, when voters overturned a law allowing gay and lesbians the right to marry in California, establishing Prop 8. Patrick Egan joins us this afternoon to talk about the findings of a study he conducted, which makes the claim that funding for different proposition campaigns does not sway the mind of the voters.

Guest / 4:30pm EST - Bruce Watson, author of Freedom Summer: The Savage Season that Made Mississippi Burn and Made America a Democracy, joins us this afternoon to talk about the summer of 1964, which led many to Mississippi for grassroots campaigning and changed voting in the south forever.

The Senate has been pursuing legislation that would give the President authority to shut down the internet in the event that our national security were to be threatened by a cyber attack. Many technology experts are thinking that this may also be a way to censor the internet. Now, Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano is also saying that there needs to be stricter laws for regulating internet traffic in order to prevent more homegrown terrorists. Do you think the government needs to be monitoring for terrorism? We'll discuss today.

Weekend Back Talk

These are some of the listener survey comments I read on the show last week. If you're a listener to the show and haven't taken the survey please do so by scrolling down and clicking through on the right. Thanks!

Toronto, ON Canada (Sirius)
I like the fact that Michealangelo is not trying to be overly "balanced". America is far too afraid of anything even a bit left of centre. In fact I'm not sure that the Democrats are really all that left of centre. Because your culture is still strong even if your economy is not, it is vital that strong entertaining and intelligent voices from left or alternate views on the political spectrum (like us homos) have a forum.

Washington DC, (Sirius)

I enjoy the balance Mr. Signorile displays on his radio show. While I can typically figure out his personal views, he is unafraid to discuss both sides of an issue. Understanding why the GLBT community likes or dislikes something is important and enjoyable to hear as a gay man. I believe it is also important to understand why the opponents of GLBT issues come to their conclusions...even when difficult to hear. Only then can positive and effective strategies be designed to counter anti-GLBT activists.

Glen Rose TX, (XM)

Michael not only are you authoritarian you also twist the truth. First of all I am a lesbian liberal not a conservative guy as you indicated on you show. Also Glen Rose is right outside of Ft. Worth and has nothing to do with Glen Beck. You are the most authoritarian person I listen too because I don't listen to Glen Beck or other conservative talk shows. When I wrote that I wish we had true diversity of Gay News reporting on OutQ it wasn't about have more conservative voices on OutQ but more about how someone on the show that didn't twist facts like you do and isn't as authoritarian and disrespectful of your callers and listeners as you are.

San Francisco, CA (Sirius)
I listen with great interest to your program. I've followed you ever since your days with ACT-UP, and I was delighted to discover your show when I started listening to Out-Q several years ago. I find you AUTHORITATIVE, not AUTHORITARIAN, as some misguided listener wrote in to you. You are telling the truth to power, which often makes people uncomfortable. One of the greatest things about your show is that it is intelligent and diverse, with cogent analysis by you, and fascinating guests. I like that you have on those with whom you disagree, something that many (if not most) other talk shows don't do! And David Guggenheim sounds really cute, also. :)

Gurnee, IL (XM)
You host the smartest show on OutQ, Michelangelo. Your news analysis is very fair. What I enjoy is when you let your views shine through, because partisanship makes for good radio. Consider your most popular counterparts on the right and how biased they are. The fact that you ostensibly care so much about what people say about you is charming, but may be a bit of an Achilles' heel. Your desire to please too many may keep you from your greatest achievement. Keep up your insightful analysis, and I'll keep listening.

Bakersfield, CA (XM)
I just found your show a few weeks ago and love to listen. Your discussions are very informative, clear and concise. I now feel like I can make an informed decision in my local elections for governor/senate in California. You have opened up an entire new world for me out here in farm country..Thanks!

Rochester, MI, (Sirius)
Michelangelo hosts an outstanding show. What a relief to have such an inquisitive, pragmatic show. Terrestrial radio is such a fools playground as evidenced by all the right-wing nut jobs that waste airspace! Kudos to Michelangelo and also his producer David Guggenheim, after all its those behind the scene that never get enough credit! I'm always listening because every show is enlightening and makes me a more informed person. Thanks guys!!

Oceanside, CA (Sirius)

The only reason I even subscribe to Sirius radio is to hear your show. It is the ONLY place I can get up to date news on gay issues. Your show has many times given me the opportunity to bring my gay friends up to date on what is happening with current issues (like DADT) I find the show very informative as well as entertaining. I always look forward to getting some time in my car when I can listen to the whole show. (FYI I am a lawyer, out now after a 25 year marriage to a woman. I went to reparative therapy and all sorts of s%@#). Both of my children live full time with me....it was their choice to live with their gay father rather than their heterosexual mother). Keep up the good work!!

Woburn, MA (XM)
Thanks for putting together such an informative show with entertaining and interesting discussion. I have to say that when listening I often get so mad at the news I get from your show! it is motivating me to get out and make a difference in my community and really shedding light on what's going on in our country. Living in Massachusetts, I feel that I have so many more privileges than others do and only hope that the rest of our country catches up soon. Thanks again - I really do enjoy the show.

Today on the Signorile Show

All the talk today is about the non-apology for the apology by Texas Republiban Representative Joe Barton, to BP for the apparent "shakedown" from the White House for making BP set aside $20 Billion in relief funds. Republicans are spinning out of control trying to undo the damage and there is still a lot of fall out from his comments. We'll go over the the rest of yesterday's hearings and how Barton's comment's really hurt the Republicans.

Meanwhile, as the hearings went on in Washington, the oil continued to leak off the Gulf Coast. The president made the claim that we'll be able to capture 90% of the oil soon, but many are wondering if this oil will ever stop gushing. We'll talk about the concerns of scientists that think this leak is unstoppable.

Guests / 3:30pm EST - The Advocates Kerry Eleveld joins us this afternoon to discuss the status of ENDA legislation in Washington and also the progress, or lack there of, by the Obama administration on LGBT equality.

Guest / 4:30pm EST - Dr. Jallen Rix is a speaker, educator and author. His latest book is Ex-Gay No Way: Survival and Recovery From Religious Abuse, which talks about the religious abuses of the conversion therapy movement and his own journey through it.

The internet is still a fairly new frontier, one where we have started hearing stories about cyber hacking that pose a risk of national security. There is currently a bill in the Senate, which would grant powers to the president to essentially shut down the internet if there was a suspect threat to our national security. Many technology experts are wondering though if this is just an attempt to try and censor the internet from leaks on whistle blower websites, such as Wikileaks. We'll go over some of the details that are being suggested in this bill and get your thoughts on whether this is an attempt to censor the internet.

It's Friday, that means we'll be giving away our "Angel, Turkey, Gassie and Climax of The Week!" Who gets an award this week? Cast your votes on Mike's Twitter and Facebook! (If you already follow Mike, be sure to follow my tweets too!)

Today on the Signorile Show

Yesterday, Judge Vaughn Walker heard the closing arguments from sides om the Prop 8 case in California. We told you about Walker questioning Olsen and Boise in the morning during their statements and according to the LA Times, Walker questioned Charles Cooper, the attorney for the proponents for Prop8, and "continually pressed the sometimes flustered Cooper on just what marriage means and why the state should care about it." We'll discuss the hearing of the closing arguments this afternoon with report Lisa Keen.

Hearings are already underway today at the House Energy and Commerce Committee, where BP CEO Tony Hayward is testifying about what went wrong nine weeks ago when the Deepwater Horizon Rig exploded, causing the worst environmental disaster in US history. We'll go over what legislators have said during the hearing and some of Hayward's response.

There is more in the scandalous life of possibly closeted Illinois Republican Senate candidate Mark Kirk, who has had his military service in question. This time, his teaching career has come under scrutiny. How has he exaggerated his teachings career? We'll go over that, today.

A new Washington Post/ABC poll has discovered that a majority of American's actually support the new Arizona immigration law, which would allow authorities to question the residency of suspected undocumented immigrants. Is this for real?! We'll go over this as well.

Debating Get Equal

Last week Bil Browning of the Bilerico Project came on the show to discuss his three-part series on Get Equal, the direct action group that has received lots of attention for its work at bringing attention to LGBT issues. Browning contends that Get Equal needs to be more transparent, among other criticisms, asking, "Is Get Equal the New HRC?" Heather Conk, managing director of Get Equal responded to Browning's criticisms. I invited both of them on the show last week to discuss the issue in two separate interviews posted below.

We discussed a lot more, including what needs to happen now. Listen in.

Today on the Signorile Show

Last night,President Obama gave an Oval Office address regarding the BP Gulf Oil Leak. After the speech, some Republicans predictably claimed he's trying to exploit the disaster for political gain, but some liberals and progressives also criticized the speech, saying he only touched the surface and was too vague in his response and his push for energy reform. What did you think? We'll go though it and take calls.

After a five-month hiatus, court is back in session today, with Judge Vaughn Walker hearing the closing arguments in the historic Prop 8 trial. We'll be updating you today on what is coming out of California.

Sharron Angle, the Tea Party-backed Republican Senate candidate running against Harry Reid in Nevada, arrived in Washington yesterday to meet with Republican's to show she's ready to take on the challenges of Washington elites. According to the Washington Post, "
as she made the rounds of the senators she came to see, the anti-Washington candidate seemed to go out of her way not to be seen." Meanwhile, comments of hers have surfaced in which she called for an armed insurrection. We'll talk about her appearances, and her rebellion-talk, this afternoon.

Guest / 3:30pm EST - We spoke about the HHS Committee vote regarding the ban on gay men donating blood. The committee voted it down with a vote of 9-6. Joining us today to talk about what went wrong, Adam Bink, who has been following this on OpenLeft.com.

Guest
/ 4:30pm EST -Wendy Moffat, author of A Great Unrecorded History: A New Life of EM Forster, joins us this afternoon to discuss the life of E.M. Forster and how keeping his homosexuality secretive influenced his writings and why his history of gay experiences, he believed, would find its audience in a happier time.

Elton John now claims, through his partner David Furnish, that he was "building bridges" by singing at Rush Limbaugh's wedding -- but no mention of the million bucks he collected or where it's going. Meanwhile, news has now surfaced that the pastor who married Limbaugh and 4th wife was none other than the antigay Ken Hutcherson, who Mike's sparred with on the show several times. We'll surely be talking about it and taking your calls.

Yesterday San Francisco passed a law mandating cell phone providers disclose the amount of radiation emitted from cell phones at the point of purchase. Are the studies conclusive enough that radiation from cell phones can cause brain tumor? Could this hurt the cell phone sales in the US? Would this stop you from buying? We'll discuss today.

Today on the Signorile Show

Last night lightning struck an iconic, 62-foot-tall statue of Jesus, which we're sure Pat Roberston will say was a sign from God, right? "Charred remnants remained this morning, June 15, of the large Jesus statue iconic to Interstate 75 that was destroyed following an apparent lightning strike during a thunderstorm late Monday night." According to two witnesses, "They say its ironic that with a Hustler store nearby, the Jesus statue outside the church should be the thing destroyed by fire." We'll have some fun with this one

The president is finishing up his trip to the south east to examine the effects of the disastrous BP oil leak in the Gulf of Mexico, which is in its 57th day. Tonight, he will deliver an update to the American people from the Oval Office. What does he need to say this speech? We'll go over that this afternoon.

Over the weekend, a gay man from Savannah, Georgia was beaten, suffering two seizures during his attack by two US Marines. Joe.My.God. reports that they have only been charged with a misdemeanor assault charges. The two have been restricted to their base while the FBI investigate whether or not this is a hate crime.

And you thought Arizona's ideas for battling undocumented immigration were extreme? Tom Mullins, the GOP's candidate for Rep. Ben Ray Lujan in New Mexico, suggested last month in a radio interview that we lay land mines down between the US and Mexican border. According to CBS news, "He explained Monday the suggestion about the land mines was something he'd heard while campaigning, and that it came in response to a complaint that nothing could be done to secure the boarder." We'll get into more of what he has to say this afternoon.

Today on the Signorile Show

As we approach Senate hearings on her nomination, things have been pretty quiet on the Elena Kagan front. But Duncan Osborne of Gay City News writes on his blog about Kagan's defense of religious freedom in 1996,How does her view of this case, which deals with anti-discrimination laws vs. religious rights, fair for the the LGBT community? We'll speak with Duncan Osborne at 4:30 ET and lay out the details of the case.

Is the White House finally getting a handle on the response to the BP oil leak? This morning, President Obama's headed to the Gulf states to assess more of the damage. He will spend today and tomorrow traveling to the different beaches and talking to the people whose lives have been affected. This weekend, the administration announced that the president would be meeting with the heads of BP to discuss fixing this leak and putting money aside for those whose lives have been destroyed by BP's failure to contain this leak. The White House also announced the president would give an update to the American people tomorrow night in a televised address from the Oval Office to summarize his visit and to use this time to promote tougher energy laws.

Guest

Guest / 4:30pm EST - Duncan Osborne joins us to clarify what Elena Kagan wrote in the memo to President Clinton in which she argued , "that the Clinton administration... join religious conservatives in asking the US Supreme Court to review and reverse a California Supreme Court ruling that found that a landlord's religious objections to renting to an unmarried couple were trumped by that states anti-discrimination law."

While "don't ask, don't tell" waits to be repealed, gay and lesbian soldiers are living in limbo.

In perhaps in an example of the work battling homophobia that military officials must do, two Marines have been charged with brutally assaulting a gay man.

Just when calls for pulling out of Afghanistan were reaching a crescendo amid reports of further deterioration, comes a report in The New York Times: "The United States has discovered nearly $1 trillion in untapped mineral deposits in Afghanistan... enough to fundamentally alter the Afghan economy and perhaps the war itself." The deposits, which include copper, iron and lithium, "are essential to modern industry that Afghanistan could eventually be transformed into one of the most important mining centers in the world." But in fact all this has been known for years and this seems to be the latest in Pentagon propaganda.
