Today on the Signorile Show

We'll be going through the president's State of the Union address last night -- and oh yes, the two Republican rebuttals (crazy and crazier) from Paul "young gun" Ryan and Rep. Michele Bachmann, queen of the Tea Party.

Guest / 3:30pm EST
- Adam Schwartz, Senior Staff Counsel with the ACLU of Illinois, joins us to talk about eavesdropping laws across the country and the penalties that have been used against people who are recording their interactions with the police while detained. Today on the Signorile Show

President Obama will give the State of the Union address tonight. Lots of discussion about what he will say, the "centrist" approach he will take and the lowered expectations that the Human Rights Campaign is trying to create, preparing people for the fact that the president will say nothing on LGBT rights. What should he say? What will he say? We'll take your calls.

Republicans took control of the House of Representatives riding on a wave of Tea Party activism, which, the media told us, were a whole new wave of conservatives that was focused on less government and had thrown out the divisive social issues of the past. But not yet a month into their new found control Republicans are backing a bill to ban gay marriage in Washington DC, whose city council had made marriage legal for gays and lesbians last year. The effort is led by Ohio Republican Jim Jordan, who who aggressively courted Tea Party activists. Never mind the fact that interfering in Washington DC’s affairs and thwarting home rule is the very essence of federal government overreach. It seems that the Republican Party leaders only wants less government when it suit them and the Tea Party, and still is very much captive to the ugly demands of religious zealot. We'll get into it.

3:30pm EST - Jaren Artery, board member with Wyoming Equality, will speak with us today about a recent House bill that now moves to the Wyoming Senate, which prevents the state from recognizing out of state civil unions and same-sex marriages. There is a possibility of a compromise, with law makers moving forward to get their own version of a civil unions bill passed in the near future.

4:30pm EST - Cherry Vanilla, iconic publicist to David Bowie, performer with Andy Warhol and author of Lick Me: How I Became Cherry Vanilla, sits with us in studio this afternoon to talk about her book, which is an amazing look at the life of someone who lived through an explosive time in music and pop culture!

In New York and Arkansas there are efforts underway to ban texting and walking as well as listening to music with your headsets while running or cycling. WTF? We'll take your calls. And yes, you'll be driving while talking on the phones -- be careful!

Today on the Signorile Show

Guest / 3:30pm EST - Faraz Sanei with the Middle East and African Division of the Human Rights Watch, joins us this afternoon to discuss a study the organization released last month, We Are A Buried Generation, which focuses on the discrimination and violence against sexual minorities in Iran as well as discuss the potential stoning of two young men who were allegedly accused of video taping the rape of another man and how this is commonplace among this discrimination.

Guests / 4:30pm EST - We'll speak with Joe Kofler and Kelly Egan, two Valley Stream South, Long Island high school seniors who, after months of hurdles and refusal by their principal, Maureen Henry, who said she didn't mean anything bad calling people "faggot," finally got approval from their superintendent to start a Gay-Straight Alliance Program in their high school.

We spoke a lot about a caller, Rita from Memphis, this week. We'll bring back a blast from the past, when we replay our phone call with Deborah from Atlanta from 2007!

It's Friday, that means we'll be giving out our "Angel, Turkey, Gassy and Climax of the Week" awards!

Rita From PalinLand Calls In

Rita from Memphis called in to defend Sarah Palin yesterday, and I think she gives you an idea of the type of people attracted to Palin and what we're up against in trying to debunk the lies and distortions Palin spews.

Today on the Signorile Show

This week Sarah Palin reminded us why she and John McCain lost in 2008. And Barack Obama reminded us why he won. While people were still mourning the deaths of those killed in the Tucson massacre and while Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords clings to life in a hospital, Palin launched into a tirade that was all about defending her against thoughtful critics who want to see the violent rhetoric stop. President Obama, on the other hand, did what a great leader does in times of national tragedy: Rose above the politics, put himself aside, and talked about the victims, the heroes and the rest of us. He consoled us, and he challenged us to debate in a more civil way. It was a challenge that will likely fall on deaf ears among those on the right, but for one night it did seem like all had stopped and a powerful message came through as President Obama was at his best. We'll go through the speech and take your calls.

So much has happened in the past few days in the Wikileaks story, including the contribution to Bradley Manning's defense, and we'll give you an update.

Former Republican House leader and crook Tom Delay was sentenced to three years in prison. But how much time will he really see? His lawyer says not a day.

Guest / 3:30pm EST - While the military took a huge step last month, with President Obama signing the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," this was only the first step to equality. Monica Helms, president and co-founder of Transgender American Veteran's Association joins us today to discuss what needs to be done to move forward on acceptance and equality in the military.

Guest / 4:30pm EST - Daniel Hernandez, the gay intern of Arizona Representative Gabrielle Giffords who ran into harms way to save her life and check on others, joins us this afternoon to talk about his heroism during this tragedy.

Former MN governor and GOP presidential hope hopeful Tim Pawlenty says that if elected he will reinstate "don't ask, don't tell!" We'll give you the details.

Back to the 80s: North Carolina legislator Larry Brown is calling for cutting off AIDS funding for adults because they had "cause it by way of their life." The hate never stops, we'll get into it.

Today on the Signorile Show

We'll be going through all the news out of Tucson this weekend when Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot along with 19 others in a horrific act of political violence that killed six people. There's much debate about the killers motives and if Sarah Palin, the Tea Party and the GOP are partly responsible due to the rising tide of violence-inciting political rhetoric.

You know if you listen to the show we've been charting this violent political talk for several years and warning about just such and instance. We've documented hate speech against President Obama and other politicians and violent rhetoric against gays, Muslims and other groups. The fact that the alleged murderer appears to be mentally ill only proves the point further: Many of us warned of an unstable person latching on to the violent political culture and crossing a line. Lots to discuss and we'll be reflecting a lot and taking your calls throughout the show.

Guest / 3:30pm EST - Duncan Osborne of Gay City News joins us this afternoon to update us on the case of DeFarra Gaymon, the CEO of an Atlanta credit union, who was shot in New Jersey Edward Esposito, an Essex County Sherriff's officer, and talk about Esposito's violent past.

Guest / 4:30pm EST - Mark Potok, director of Southern Poverty Law Center's Intelligence Project, joins us to talk about this weekend's shooting in Tucson and the groups that may have influences Jared Lee Loughner, the man who has been accused of the shooting.

Flashback: Arizona Pastor Prayed for Obama's Death

In light of the brutal gun attack on Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Arizona and the climate of violence-inciting rhetoric in the country, I'm linking back to my interview (video clip and full audio) with Arizona Pastor Stephen L. Anderson in 2009. He'd said he was praying for President Obama's death and that gays should be executed. And he told me, after I told him I was gay, that he hoped I got brain cancer and died "like Ted Kennedy." It should be noted that one of Anderson's congregants attended an Obama appearance in Arizona carrying his rifle.

Also, below is my appearance on CNN to discuss the interview.

Today on the Signorile Show

Guest / 3:30pm EST - Dr. Eric Anderson, an American sociologist teaching with the Department of Sports Studies at the University of Winchester, England, has recently released a study that shows more and more straight men in high school and college are kissing. Does this mean the beginning for the end of homophobia? He joins us this afternoon to explain.

Guest / 4:30pm EST - When you look up at the sky at night, did you know everything you see actually only makes up 4% of what's really out there in the universe? Richard Panek, author of The 4% Universe: Dark Matter, Dark Energy and the Race to Discover the Rest of Reality, joins us today to discuss how scientists came to these conclusions and the rivalries that have fueled and redifined the universe as we know it.

It's Friday, that mean's we'll be giving out 2011's first "Angel, Turkey, Gassie and Climax" of the Week Awards!

Today on the Signorile Show

Washington takes on an orange glow as John Boehner takes over as Speaker of the House, where Republicans are already bending their own (pretty bogus) rules on transparency, while also changing the rules to consolidate power. And today, they will read the Constitution on the floor of the House, in an empty gesture pushed by the Tea Party, before they move on to their promise to repeal health care reform. In the Senate, some Democrats will continue to push for filibuster reform today. And President Obama named William Daley as his new chief of staff, a man who has said Democrats should "moderate" their positions. We've got a lot to get into today.

A marriage equality bill will be introduced in the Rhode Island legislature today, giving gays and lesbians there the rights they have in Massachussetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Connecticut and Iowa.

The Boston Herald's popular, long-time sports columnist Steve Buckley has come out as gay. Good for him!

Guest / 3:30pm EST - Ross Levi is the Executive Director of the Empire State Pride Agenda and joins us this afternoon to talk about his plans for advancing equality for the LGBT community and the likelihood of getting another vote for marriage equality in the state of New York this year.

John McCain now says he'll support repeal of DADT. WTF? Sarah Paln now seems to support repeal, sort of.

And yes, we do have to talk about the hypocrisy of evangelicals attacking environmentalists and global warming supporters as evil while also building Noah's Ark with the latest green technology.

We had a web glitch yesterday and didn't post, but for those wanted a link to our guest's book, here it is: An Apple a Day: The Myths, Misconceptions and Truths About the Foods We Eat.

Today on the Signorile Show

The Navy has now removed Captain Own Honors from his command after his antigay videos went viral. His defenders have said all of this was bowing to political correctness but letting him off with nothing would have made a mockery of the President's commitment to ending discrimination. We'll take your calls and get into it.

A three-judge panel of the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals has sent Prop 8 back to the California Supreme Court to decide if Prop 8 proponents even have standing. It will be a while longer before we know if Prop 8 is unconstitutional.

In a debate yesterday every RNC chair candidate came out for banning gays from marriage, even as we keep hearing that the Republican Party is trying to move forward on the issue. We'll listen in to their idiotic tirades and they bow to the theocrats.

Guest / 3:30pm EST - Author Anand Giridharadas joins us to talk about his latest book, India Calling: An Intimate Portrait of a Nation's Remaking, in which he talks about businesses and global politics have led to a more modern India and how some are trying to weave old traditions into new ambitions.

Guest / 4:30pm EST - It's likely there will be a vote tomorrow on the first day of the 112th Congress to reform the filibuster in the Senate. Mimi Marziani, who is an author of the Brennen Center for Justice recent study, Filibuster Abuse, joins us to discuss the need for reform and what we can expect should it pass.

Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia says that gays and women have no protections in the Constitution, seeming to rewrite the document as he goes along. How do you spell activist judge?

And the story of Princess Boy, who is speaking out. We'll take your calls about his mother, her book and what you think.

Today on the Signorile Show

Happy new Year and welcome to 2011! We're back with a live show after relaxing for the holidays, and ready to jump back in. Hope you enjoyed our week-long special broadcast looking back on the history of "don't ask, don't tell" repeal last year.

Today we look forward, and much of what we're looking at is still focused on homosexuality and the military: Outrage is heating up over raunchy antigay videos made by Navy Capt. Owen Honors who commands USS Enterprise. The Navy has been quick to condemn his actions, but many are wondering what the ramification will be and if the Pentagon will have a policy of zero-tolerance for homophobia now that DADT is on its way out. We'll go into it.

New Hampshire is gearing for a battle over marriage equality -- even though it was won over a year ago. Antigay bigots are trying to now repeal the state's marriage law giving gays the right to marry.

Will the Senate stop the abuse of the filibuster?
Now is the only week it can happen, bringing the filibuster back to something it used to be -- a tool for the minority to get its opinion heard -- rather than an obstructionist tactic meant to stop everything in the Senate. We'll look at the details.

Guest / 3:30 EST - Karen Abbott, author of American Rose: The True Story Gypsy Rose Lee, says Salon.com, is even weirder than the legend.

Guest / 4:30 EST - Lavi Soloway, co-founder of Immigration Equality, joins us this afternoon to talk about "Stop The Deportations," a campaign launched to raise awareness of the cruel impact the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) has on married gay and lesbian bi-national couples.

President Obama praised the Philadelphia Eagles for giving dog-fighting ex-convict Michael Vick a second chance. And it has caused an uproar. We'll open it up to the phones.
