Guest / 3:30pm EST - On the show, we are always on the lookout for those anti-gay preachers and pastors who are spewing vile, hateful rhetoric about the LGBT community. Today, we talk to a former Presbyterian minister who wrote in Salon over the weekend that he used to preach that same rhetoric, but realized that the message he was spreading was wrong. Murray Richmond joins us this afternoon to speak about his piece, "I Preached Against Homosexuality, But I Was Wrong."
Guest / 4:30pm EST - We hear the words "peer pressure" and assume the worst. And while some can resist the urge, most give into the temptation. But what if the power of "peer pressure" could be harnessed as a tool to promote a better well being? Tina Rosenberg, author of Join The Club: How Peer Pressure Can Transform The World, joins us today to explain how peer pressure can be used for good.

Today on the Signorile Show
Guest / 3:30pm EST - Last year, we saw activist group GetEQUAL focus the media spotlight on the repeal effort of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," by staging sit ins at legislators offices and handcuffing themselves to the White House fence. They are currently facing charges for one such protest in front of the White House last November, which could have them serving a maximum six month jail sentence. Robin McGehee, co-founder of GetEQUAL and one of the GetEQUAL 13, joins us this afternoon to explain the charges.
Guest / 4:30pm EST - Authorities in Washington have been drafting legislation to phase out Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, the government controlled mortgage financiers. Some experts are saying this could be a problem for middle class home buyers. Thomas Ferguson, professor of political science at UMass Boston and Senior Fellow at the Roosevelt Institute, joins us today to explain what happens if these two institutions are eliminated.

Saturday Back Talk
Here are some of the listener survey comments I read on the show in recent weeks. If you're a listener to the show and haven't taken the survey please do so by scrolling down on the right and clicking through. Thanks!
Edina, MN (Sirius)
I love the fact that you talk about all issues, not just "gay, lesbian" issues and that you do it from our community's viewpoint. Thank you for being so out spoken and willing to challenge us to think "outside the box".
Norman, OK (XM)
I enjoy the show a lot, but sometimes it gets so heavy because of serious topics. It is nice when there is a little relief from some non-news or light news topics.
Los Angeles, CA (Sirius)
Mike, I don't think you talk over guests inappropriately. I think it is silly for people to think that because you call them a "guest" this is anything like a guest in your home. Are you having tea and crumpets or something? I think people should understand that if they agree to come on your show, you will be respectful, but the show is not a platform for them to project sound bites and spin information in their favor. You have a POV and we listen because we find your POV interesting! Please please please continue to direct the conversation in a way that is informative and not like the BS we get from other news and talk. If I wanted that I wouldn't be paying Sirius money every year!
Merida, Yucatan MEXICO (Sirius)
Love the show, but I'm finding the sound of frantic typing in the background as Michelangelo is speaking very annoying and distracting. Maybe it's because I listen with headphones that it is such a bright annoying sound.
Fall River, WI (Sirius)
Because of Michelangelo, I have learned to dismiss foolish, hateful talk toward the Gay Community. When someone makes a hateful comment, I badger that person and demand an explanation for the remarks. In most cases, it is the Religous Right Wing-nut mentality that makes the comments. Shamefully, I used to make those same comments...at that time--back in the 80's-I was not privy to facts. I held the same prejudices as the environment I was surrounded by. I'm not using that as an excuse, back then gays were closeted, I tell everyone I listen to OutQ...and I promote the show to those who have SiriusXM. I really can't make suggestions on how to improve Michelangelo's show. I'm just fortunate to have the opportunity to learn and listen. Thank you.
Fullerton, CA (Sirius)
I get a lot of my news and political analysis from your show. When you are not there, the "Best Of" shows are a real disappointment -- like opening a bag of Cheetos which turns out to be stale. Since your show is so "current events" oriented, it would be much better to have guest hosts to fill as many of your days off as possible. I mean, does ABC air a rerun of "World News Tonight" when Diane Sawyer is off? No. Neither should your show. "Best Ofs" should be a last resort.
Fullerton, CA (Sirius)
I owe both Mike and David an apology. You'll probably remember my "stale bag of Cheetos" comment about "Best Of" shows. As you discussed it on air, I heard David say it was "quite a put-down." I never meant it that way. I was trying to say, in a funny way, how much I look forward to a live show vs. hearing a "Best Of." :-) I've been a daily listener since 2005 and I feel very bad that my comment was taken negatively. I would call in to apologize properly, but I listen while at work and can't get enough free time for a call. Please accept my apology. I love your show! (and Cheetos too ;-)
Chicago, IL (XM)
I really like hearing about topical political discussions especially as pertaining to transsexual issues and discrimination. Following that are LGB issues regarding equal rights, marriage equality and DADT. It is a really good show. Thanks!
Thousand Oaks, CA (XM)
Dear Michelangelo, I am a devout Signorile follower. I think you have the most informed take on current and cultural events, especially from a Gay perspective. But I'm writing about something painful that just happened to me with one of your screeners. . I started by telling him that I didn't know if my question was appropriate or not. You were talking about intimate details concerning anal intercourse (the subject was The idiot Gallagher monster, and her ilk's seeming obsession with anal sex). So true. My question was, I understood why a man would enjoy anal sex, because of his prostate, but I didn't know why a woman might, but clearly they do. I've had experience with heterosexual sex, but that just never came up. I thought it was a neutral question, born of simple curiosity. I thought you might know more than I do. The screener said, with some hostility, didn't I have a woman in my life, and that my question was insulting. I was shocked, mostly at myself, that I might have said something hostile about ANYONE. I asked him how was it insulting. He said, I'm paraphrasing here, that he didn't have the time. Fair enough, but every thing he said was hostile to me. God knows, I can be thick sometimes. My biggest fear is that my question WAS hostile, and I didn't see that. I was also hurt by the screener, but it's not his job to make me feel okay, especially if I was being an asshole, and EXTRA especially, to anything having to do with you or your show, which is one of the staples of my day, and for which I have endless admiration I would seriously like to know how my question was out of line, especially as you were talking about the purpose of the sphincter muscle, etc. I really am feeling awful about it. My enjoyment and pleasure of your show has been tinged, at least temporarily, by this.
Walnut Creek, CA (Sirius)
You are doing a great job & I look forward to listening to you everyday. I still don't know why women like anal sex!! :) I wanted to know too! Guess I will have to call up Romaine!
Richmond, KY (Sirius)
I enjoy your show...agree with many of your thoughts...wish you'd reconsider your views on "outing".
Phoenix, AZ (Sirius)
I like guest hosts, I like radio reruns. I don't think you take too many vacation days. Great show, great discussions.
Grand Junction, CO (XM)
One thing I observe, the very thing that is condemned of the right/teabag/republican party is exactly what you do when discussing issues or interacting with callers. Yesterday you were talking with a Christian caller who said he loved you and didn't think he was better than you but you turned on him and said you were better than him and explained all the reasons why. It appears the exclusive beliefs run high on both sides. Yes, people believe in religion and tend to believe what the church leader preaches. I believe that the LGBT community, generally, is so sick of the religious faiths that condemn homosexuality, that whenever a religious person, even innocently, shares their views, it is met with the hate and anger we accuse them of having toward us. We want love and acceptance but vehemently oppose others views. It is a feeling of being stuck between a rock and a hard place. We want and deserve equal rights and we are in the minority so I understand that we have to draw the line, hold our ground, and fight to gain everything we get. I just feel that the issue can be approached with more education, more patience, and yes, more love.
Atlanta, GA (XM)
I was listening to the show about the Chick-Fil-A controversy. I will never eat at this place. My best friend was fired from there when they found out that his best freind was gay and he attended a gay pride parade with him. The excuse given was that he was not living up to the standards of good moral character for the restaurant. Horrible place.

Today on the Signorile Show
The news out of Japan looks even darker, as radiation levels at the nuclear plant have risen dramatically. We look at the potential Republican presidential candidates on LGBT issues, as their homophobia is rising faster than the radiation in Japan. The governor of Alaska has nominated a man to the state judicial council who believes adultery should be prosecuted, which might mean New Gingrich can't go there! The latest on Libya as command is being shifted to NATO. Is the Uganda "kill the gays" bill killed?
Guest / 3:30pm EST - We have been told that the key to longevity involves obsessing over what we eat, how much we stress and how fast we run. Based on the most extensive study of longevity ever conducted, That may not be true. The Longevity Project: Suprising Discoveries for Health and Long Life from the Landmark Eight Decade Study exposes what really impacts our lifespan, including friends, family, personality, and work. Co-author Leslie Martin, Ph.D. joins us this afternoon to debunk the myths to a long life.
Guest / 4:30pm EST - Tres Watson, Executive Director of Canvass For A Cause, joins us this afternoon to talk about this morning's court case in which Superior Court Judge Jeffery Barton will hear arguments from Target and CFAC. Target isued CFAC for petitioning outside its San Diego stores, promoting marriage equality, and, according to Target, scaring off its customers. In a preliminary hearing earlier this month, the judge found that the group'ss First Amendment rights trump Target's business interests.

Sarah Palin is feeling pressured to make a decisoin And openly gay Fred Karger has annoucned he's running. We'll play his campaign video.
And we're going to get to that "kids on planes" discussion we
We'll be reading listener survey comments today too!
Guest / 3:30pm EST - Last month, President Obama and Attorney General Holder announced that they would refuse to defend Section 3 of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA). This was great news and a big step forward for the LGBT community and marriage equality. Does this decision go further than marriage and help to further efforts for other issues, like the Employment Non-Discrimination Act (ENDA)? Civil rights litigator and former lead council for ENDA in the House of Representatives, Tico Almeida, joins us today to explain how this decision on DOMA helps to further ENDA.
Guest / 4:30pm EST - Jessica Wapner, biomedical contributor to The Atlantic, Scientific America, Slate and others joins us this afternoon to talk about her latest article in The Atlantic, "Why We Need To Stop Treating HIV Victims Like Criminals," which "explores the laws exposing someone to HIV a criminal act are designed to stop the virus from spreading" and why they don't.
We got a lot of great responses from our interview with William Mann, author of How To Be A Movie Star: Elizabeth Taylor In Hollywood. As a treat, we'll replay it for you at the end of the show!
I have some listener survey's to get to!

While discussing the new policy of Orange County's famed Crystal Cathedral, in which choir members were asked to sign an antigay pledge, a member of the church, John from Imperial Valley, CA, called in. John defended the policy on the grounds that homosexuality is a "choice," though he stated that he didn't think he was a "better person" than me, and that he "loved" me.
I told him that, actually, I am a better person than him, because I don't condemn people in such an evil manner based on innate characteristics. I also told him that he couldn't "love" me because he doesn't even know me and that saying so is just plain creepy. Take a look.

Today on the Signorile Show
Yesterday was such a stellar show, with Dan Savage in studio and MSNBC's openly gay anchor Thomas Roberts, and then all the passionate talk about the iPhone "ex-gay" app -- which now appears to have been pulled by Apple -- but another full plate today.
First off, that Ex-App: What happened to the Exodus International app and did Apple finally see the light after 140,000 people signed a petition? No word yet from Apple, but we'll talk about whether or not it was the right thing to do -- lots of discussion on our Facebook page and on twitter.
The continued intervention in Libya, showing more confusion among the allies and not causing Ghaddafi to budge from power. A lot more questions about the end-game and just who is in charge.
Also, kids on planes: More calls by airline travelers to offer "family-only" cabins and flights, or "adult-only" ones. We've all had the kid banging on our seat or running up and down the aisle making havoc. But should they be segregated? USA Today has a lengthy piece on this and overweight passengers -- we'll open it up to the phones.
And of course we look back on the life of the legendary actress and AIDS activist Elizabeth Taylor. William Mann, author of How To Be A Movie Star: Elizabeth Taylor In Hollywood, joins us at 2:30pm EST to talk about the alluring life of this influential star.
Guest 3:30pm EST - Robert Epstein, award winning director of The Times Of Harvey Milk, joins us this afternoon to talk about the re-release of this groundbreaking documentary that captured the atmosphere of the time and influence Harvey Milk had on not only the San Francisco LGBT community, but on the nation as well.
Guest / 4:30pm EST - Immigration lawyer Lavi Soloway joins us this afternoon to talk about Monica Alcota, a citizen of Argentina and Cristina Ojeda, a US citizen, who have requested an Immigration Judge terminate deportation proceedings so they could pursue a marriage-based green card without fear of deportation. This is the first time a married same-sex couple will appear in court to seek termination of such proceedings since the Obama administration reversed it position on Section 3 of DOMA.

Today on the Signorile Show
Are we at war again? What began as a "no-fly zone" has morphed into a full scale attack, with American cruise missiles and air strikes hitting Libyan targets. The U.S. is suddenly in another conflict in the Muslim world. This time there was even less debate in this country than before the Iraq invasion and early polls showed Americans against military intervention. What is the end-game for the U.S. and the allies? How does the president justify remaining allied with Bahrain, which has brutally cracked down on protesters, as well as other dictatorial Arab regimes, while defending the rebels with force in Libya? And what of the American media, which seems to love the beginnings of wars -- lots of urgent breaking news alerts, cool graphics and theme music cued up -- but then likes to forget about them later on? We'll take your calls on all this and more.
Apple has now received over 100,000 petitions to get rid of an "ex-gay" app they peddle on the iPhone. What should the company do? We'll get into it.
Guest / 3:30pm EST - Is 90 really the new 50? Susan Jacoby, author of Never Say Die: The Myth and Marketing of the New Old Age, joins us today to debunk the myths that the Baby Boomers could be "forever young" promoted by the media and health guru's and highlights the health and financial problems this generation will face as they age.
Guest / 4:30pm EST - Steve Clemons, editor of The Washington Note and Senior Fellow with the New America Foundation, joins us this afternoon to discuss what's going on in Libya and how long we can expect to be there.

Guest / 3:30pm EST - The book Jet Age: The Comet, The 707 and the Race to Shrink The World, describes the rivalry that took place 50 years ago between America's Boeing 707 and the British de Havilland's Comet in the race for the sky with the birth of the commercial jet airliners. Author Sam Howe Verhovek joins us today to talk about the birth of commercial air travel.
Guest / 4:30pm EST - Last week, Lisa Ling, host of Our America on Oprah's new network OWN, did an episode titled "Pray The Gay Away," which was said to be a look at "one of the most polarizing debates in Christianity today: Is it possible to be gay and Christian at the same time?" Many have criticized the episode, say Ling could have done a better job exposing the truth behind the myth's of the "ex-gay." Wayne Besen of Truth Wins Out joins us this afternoon to discuss why he thinks Ling was "duped" by Exodus Internationals Alan Chambers and what he thinks Ling should have done to expose the group.

Today on the Signorile Show

We have a lot to get into today!
News that a vote in Maryland on marriage equality is coming up tomorrow. We'll go into the details. Should the U.S. intervene in Libya? We'll open the phones and get thoughts on both sides. Rick Santorum now thinks maybe gay sex is okay? Just as long as you don't get married? What? We'll go through it. And Peter King's reckless McCarthyesque hearings on "radicalism" among Muslim-Americans: Who is the woman behind the movement to demonize U.S. citizens and how is the Christian evangelical movement involved. We'll get the facts.
Guest / 3:30pm EST - Sara Wheeler took a journey to Antarctica over ten years ago and documented her time there in her bestselling book, Terra Incognita. Recently, she journeyed to the northern Arctic regions of the globe and has detailed her adventures there in The Magnetic North: Notes From The Arctic Circle, which she talks about the changing landscape due to global warming and what this means for the people who call this region home.
Guest / 4:30pm EST - As we wait for the implementation of the repeal of "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," which was signed by President Obama in December, the military is working on training their personnel about the new policy. JD Smith, a co-director with OutServe, an organization with over 2700 active duty gay and lesbian servicemembers, joins us this afternoon to talk about the training processes.

Guest / 3:30pm EST - Andrea Ritchie, co-author of Queer (In)Justice: The Criminalization of LGBT People in the United States, joins us this afternoon to talk about the inequalities we see in the legal system when it comes to the treatment of gay, lesbian and transgender people as victims and offenders.
Guest / 4:30pm EST - At the end of last week, we saw the Maryland marriage equality bill, the Civil Marriage Protection Act, passed in committee in the Maryland House of Delegates by 12-10. While it was expected to go through the Maryland House with little resistance, there had been a few hurdles prior to Friday's vote. David Lublin, Co-chair of Equality Maryland's Legislative Committee and mayor of Chevy Chase, joins us this afternoon to talk about what happened and what these means as equality moves forward in Maryland.

No Live Show
I'm off today and tomorrow, but you'll hear special shows put together with interviews and caller discussions from the recent past. We'll be be back with a live show on Monday. Have a great weekend!
Interview With Russian Gay Activist Nikolai Alekseev
Nikolai Alekseev, founder of Moscow Pride and a man who, with other LGBT activists, has faced brutal repression and police beatings year after year as Moscow Pride was banned, is in the U.S. on a speaking tour. He spoke at the LGBT Center in New York last night and at Columbia University the night before, and now heads on to Dallas.
But his trip has been marred by controversy and his West Coast dates canceled over remarks on his blog that some charged were antisemitic. Alekseev says it was, in effect, a mistranslation from his blog, which was in Russian (he no longer has the blog up, but he said that was before any controversy and for other reasons). He sat down with me in studio to talk about the controversy and his work in Russia battling entrenched, state-sanctioned homophobia and fighting for LGBT rights. The full interview is below.

Interview Brad Taylor of Siege Busters
The New York City LGBT Center is rightly under fire for canceling an event -- a dance -- at the center as part of Israeli Apartheid Week, all because the porn producer and Zionist Michael Lucas, who's made horrendous and grotesque comments about all Muslims and Palestinians, publicly complained about the event. This is my interview from last week with Brad Taylor of Siege Busters Working Group, which was banned from the LGBT Center.

The show is LIVE today, but we will be starting at 3pm EST / 12 pm PST. Enjoy the first hour of some of the recent discussions we've had on the show! So much to get into, from yet another antigay wingnut caught with his pant down to the lies and threats from the Wisconsin governor. And so much more.

Guest / 4;30pm EST - Yesterday, President Obama held a meeting with governors in the White House to discuss issues like the economy, infrastructure and health care. During his meeting with the governors, he told them that he supports an idea of moving the states opt out date from 2017 to 2014. What does this mean for health care moving forward? Igor Volsky with the Center of American Progress joins us today to explain.

Challenge to the Reckless Media Re: Pervert Bigots

Dear Media: From now on, every time a preacher or politician speaks out against homosexuality or calls for denying rights to LGBT people you must investigate that person and demand answers from the individual about his or her sexual activity. If you do not, you've shirked your responsibility as journalists, instead pandering to sensationalist tactics by self-loathing, disturbed bigots. Because here we have, once again, a man who railed against homosexuals as perverted and sinful only to be exposed as a hypocrite and, in this case, an alleged pedophile:
The Rev. Grant Storms, the Christian fundamentalist known for his bullhorn protests of the Southern Decadence festival in the French Quarter, was arrested on a charge of masturbating at a Metairie park Friday afternoon....
...He is especially known for arming followers with bullhorns, Bibles and picket signs to protest Southern Decadence, the three-day gay festival held in the French Quarter during Labor Day weekend. Storms grabbed national attention in 2003 with his failed attempts to shut down what Southern Decadence organizer Chuck Robinson called a peaceful festival that celebrates gay and alternative lifestyles.
We've seen this in homophobic pastor after homophobic pastor, antigay politician after antigay politician. The evidence is now abundant and clear: If a public figure is railing against homosexuality it's probable -- yes, probable -- that he or she is hiding a sexual secret about which he or she is ashamed, filled with self-hate and lashing out at other. The press must not report on these people's hate-filled rants and theatrical events unless the individuals are both asked about their sexual activities and thoroughly investigated. Anything less than that is recklessly irresponsible journalism.
