Yep. There always is a group to demonize. Trans this cycle, Mexicans, Muslims, African Americans, gay and lesbian people in previous cycles. We can’t cave in to rotating bigotry.
They remember the govt checks which came in 2020 and had HIS NAME as the signature even though it was OUR money, not his! They think he will give them another...and he may need to after he completes his agenda of hate.
Clever move. Even though it held the checks up almost two weeks waiting for the signature to be imprinted.
As far the possibility of another check someday, good luck with that too. He doesn't face reelection since this is his second term. With cuts to major government programs on the way, it's unlikely any checks will be issued even with a downturn in the economy.
The Democrats cannot turn their back on anyone. If they climb on the Trump bandwagon and start taking rights from minorities, they will lose a lot of Democrats. I have known and know trans people. They are good citizens and nobody has the right to demonize them.
I saw the trans issue coming two years ago, as a cudgel for Christian nationalist Republicans to hammer Democrats. For the past two years, there were few Foxnews weeknight broadcasts without at least one attack on trans issues - mostly trans females in girls and women's sports. The Democrats made a huge mistake not addressing this, because it made it seem as if they had a policy they could not politically defend.
There should be no compromise on access to gender affirming care for adults and children, and those decisions rest with the medical professionals, the parents and the child. Period. However, there are conversations that need to be had regarding some sports, where male upper body strength might render trans females competing against cis females might not be appropriate, even if testosterone levels have been brought down for parity. That is a conversation that needed (and still needs) to be had. Our community is all about equality, and if cis female athletes are at a disadvantage in a particular sport against trans female athletes, we cannot be afraid to address. Congressman Seth Moulton was insensitive and awkward the way he framed his concerns. but it doesn't mean these concerns should be dismissed.
Riley Gaines claims that trans swimmer Lia Thomas undressed next to her in the locker room. Im sure it didn't exactly happen this way, as Riley is fiercely anti-trans, but a cis female should not be exposed to a penis in a locker room under any circumstances, even if the penis belongs to a trans girl or woman. Again, these are the issues playing out on Foxnews every night to generate hatred of the LGBT community. and without conversations, solutions if needed, and pushback from our national LGBT organizations and our supporters in the Democratic Party, they are taken as truth.
Democratic politicians like Congressman Moulton don't even have the language right in discussing these issues. That is the fault of the Democratic Party, especially LGBT politicians, who had, and continue to have, an obligation to help their colleagues with language and suggest policy that is fair to all.
While I don't think the trans issue was instrumental in Kamala's defeat, I think her campaign allowed Republicans to gain far too much traction bashing our trans friends and loved ones, by remaining silent, when clarity, fairness, and advocacy were so desperately needed. Anyone who was paying attention knew this issue was going to explode in this campaign. HRC, GLAAD, NCLR, and the other LGBT organizations, and the Democratic Party, were silent, hoping the issue would melt into the background. It didn't!
Am I seeing this right? Are there people on this board criticizing MS for taking things out of context? Taking anything at this point out of context is mild and subjective compared the literal waking nightmare we are all now living. Case in point, I just learned that Matt Gaetz, neanderthal + child sex trafficker is going to be the Attorney Gen of the US. 😱 Underage girls everywhere should heed the warning...and the white house is basically getting stacked with Florida criminals like that walking waste of skin, Rubio - I'm surprised Ron DeSatan isn't begging Trump for a spot right now. Seriously, what's next, a zombie apocalypse?
Sorry, back on point, what I find HARD to believe is why anyone has the need to tell others how to live their lives! Why are Trans people such an ISSUE for maga and others? There are many good documentaries out there that show a very real journey of a transperson. I personally think it is courageous to live your authentic self and could not imagine feeling like I was not in the right body - how awful and challenging - have some compassion! And it is NO ONEs business what meds they need or what the parents decide to do for THEIR trans child. NO ONE has the right to deny any human basic rights and needs from anyone. The idea of that is just so ignorant. Things, will be nuts but we need to let this waking nightmare play out because it will NOT be the experience MAGA has promised to deliver the voters. They delivered the message and now it is time for them to walk the walk in front of the world. They are going to run the government like the mob and we're going to watch. It will be sad, but let it roll. #RejectTrump
One small study, results released October 19. It's naive or disingenuous for you to suggest a study of 1354 likely voters conducted over a month prior to the election - before they really even started surging that ad campaign - actually supports your contention in any substantial way. This is very Fox-like use of "evidence."
Most credible polling organizations suggest the unhinged, brief but intense attack campaign was anything but ineffective. They kept pouring money into it, presumably not without reason.
Haitians eating pets, "gender reassignment surgery for illegal aliens" (two such surgeries ever for federal prisoners, citizens), "the worst economy in history," but largely Russian disinformation efforts - It all worked together surprisingly well.
Fair enough. Emphasize that instead of taking previous results out of context, and using them misleadingly.
When I try to point out, to my few remaining "conservative" acquaintances - the whole Fox "Network of Lies" phenomenon - that it's largely the entire right-wing MO - They always retort, "The Left does it too."
Fortunately, not so much. No need to give them ammunition.
none of the polling says that, and "suggests" is a convenient word. There is no polling on the issue itself. As I said, it didn't register at all in exit polls as a reason people voted for Trump or Harris. Did it solidify those going in one direction or the other? Probably, backing their prior beliefs, making them more emboldened. But no evidence of anything or a shift from one candidate to another, as the study found. The larger point of the piece, however, is that no matter what happened it would not only be wrong to throw trans under bus morally, but it would really be bad political strategy and depress way more voters in the Dem base, particularly young voters.
Dems have to be better at responding to it for sure. And they should look back to gay marriage and other issues that they were clueless on but learned how to respond on.
Any back sliding on trans rights, or any other's rights, would be a bad decision by the Democrats. IMO all the Dem candidates should have gone on offense against any Republican spouting the lies and hatred of minority group. Instead of ignoring or even worse siding with the conservatives, the candidates should have hammered them for not running on their records.
One thing that may have been damaging to Harris was the commercial showing her endorsing trans-surgery for adults in prison who wanted it. Two of my family members said they thought that was terrible, and that the taxpayers should not have to pay for that. I tried to explain it, and that Obama and even the Trump administration had this policy.
It also never happened. That scenario - "gender reassignment surgery for imprisoned illegals."
The first such surgery, on a US citizen in BOP custody was in 2022, and the second more recently. Well under 1% of the entire BOP population even identifies as transgender. Only a handful have ever even sought surgery, and it takes years of waiting, counseling, hormonal treatment, etc.
How was this Boogeyman allowed to stand, and to grow?
The immigrant prisoner right to a sex change is right next door as an issue to allowing men (violent men, including rapists) to access women's prisons. It's understandably led to a reaction from women.
Title IX is an explicit legal move to override biological sex based protections by prioritising subjective gender identity.
You spew sewage. You have no idea what Title IX actually is. Anything 'gender identity' you're thinking of came along 40 years later. But I get it. You hate trans people so much that you rant imaginary facts into some peripherally related thread.
Title IX is a U.S. federal law enacted as part of the Education Amendments of 1972. It prohibits sex-based discrimination in any education program or activity receiving federal financial assistance. Its primary purpose is to ensure equal opportunities for all genders in education, including academics, athletics, and extracurricular activities.
It also calls for reporting about sexual harassment and abuse.
It also calls for equitable athletic opportunities for both sexes, including facilities, funding
Would you please explain why a sexual predator would have HIS penis surgically removed so he could get into a woman's prison so that he could rape women without the means to do so. And if you say you don't need a physical penis to rape someone, what would be the difference if a biological woman without a penis did it and a post operative trans woman doing it?
That study you cited "said" nothing about "who people voted for." Please don't write like a Fox commentator.
Also, it wasn't "an ad." It was a $100-million blitz campaign. It's difficult to believe that you actually graduated from a journalism school. Too many decades of writing gossip.
Oh come on. I'm not going to put up with insults. I agree with some of what you've said but drop the nastiness or go. The study showed no shifts in determining who people voted for. I also discussed the "ads" plural in this piece, which ran in 10 dates and targeted Senate candidates. Civil disagreement fine, otherwise find somewhere else.
I actually think that perhaps, that Harris, a highly educated black person... & a woman , was a indefensible obstacle for many voters who are still living in their racist & misogynist "cave". The suggestion of having a leader , a black woman , making policies and laws for them is just "incomprehensible " in their ignorant minds.
I agree completely, and I worry that the Dems want to backtrack on trans rights or any other so-called woke issues. The party cannot and should let allow the republicans to define who we are or who will support. Playing defense will not get the Dems back in power, if for no other reason than the fact that republicans will keep hammering the Dems on these issues, and they will never be far enough away for them to stop.
When you cut and run, it looks cowardly at best, and the republicans will simply keep chasing the Dems. No matter how much they throw trans or anyone else under the bus, it will never placate them.
A better course it to go after their weak points, like Christian nationalism, sexual autonomy, and so on. Hit them hard on their plans to eliminate no fault divorce, access to contraception, and to make christianity the state religion that we must all adhere to.
That will put them on the defensive and they can't run away from them either.
"A better course it to go after their weak points, like Christian nationalism, sexual autonomy, and so on. Hit them hard on their plans to eliminate no fault divorce, access to contraception, and to make christianity the state religion that we must all adhere to."
That's pretty much exactly what did not "work." Shockingly and illogically, the "culture stuff," imposition of Christianity, and even the seemingly killer reproductive rights issues failed at "the top of the ticket" - for Kamala Harris in 2024.
I agree completely. As a 73 three-year-old liberal I have seen a few things. I know we are repeating exactly the same stuff as when we lost before. It was GOP light or heavy on the progressive side and here we are asking the same questions. As much as I respect Thom Hartmann to hear him talk about recreating the FDR years AGAIN means we don't have any new ideas. I hate to be a downer but if the answer is that propaganda is too powerful then what are our options? Bernie still clings to the hope that the perfect message will unleash America's dissatisfaction so overwhelmingly on the right they will wither away, and FDR will return! Living in the past. Our weakest point is being drowned out of every discussion. I don't have an answer because there may not be one available to us but siloing every discussion too pretend the lying machine is a separate issue we can ignore at will is wrong.
It's always wild reading this stuff as a trans person because I kind of dissociate before remembering 'oh yeah, this is about my rights, all these people hate me.' I think the real issue was that Democrats did not hit back against the framing, they let the attack define them by playing defense. Trans rights are about bodily autonomy, so can be tied in with abortion or the whole 'mind your own damn business' slogan. The messaging was there waiting, but everyone (including me) worried the public wouldn't get behind that and instead the Republicans got to run wild with hate and demonization
Here in the swing state of Arizona, a Trump connected PAC resorted to numerous streaming and OTA ads late in the campaign that simply lied about the issue. Claiming that students had received forced gender reassignment 'in schools' and that Harris supported that, and that genetically female participants in school sports had been physically harmed by trans competitors. Being blindsided, the Harris campaign had nothing to offer in return. Google Ads and old school TV stations aren't in the fact checking business, clearly.
The Democrats aren't talking about Trans issues because they are perfectly aware that trans ideology has been pushed to the forefront by the activists/progressive left. They had no choice but to avoid it. Are children being medicalized? Yes. Is trans ideology being introduced in Grammer schools? Yes. Are parents rights being affected? Yes (look at recent law passed in CA) Are dangerous men claiming to be women being put women's prisons? Yes Has there been an explosion of young girls wanting to be boys? Yes Did Rachel Levine convince WPATH to remove age limits for gender affirming care? Yes Did the Cass Review show that medicalizing young people did not improve mental health outcomes? Yes Have detransitioners been vilified by trans activists? Yes Has most of Europe put a pause on gender medicine for kids? Yes ..... This is just a short list. How are any of these issues "anti"??
Yep. There always is a group to demonize. Trans this cycle, Mexicans, Muslims, African Americans, gay and lesbian people in previous cycles. We can’t cave in to rotating bigotry.
The average person thinks Trump can end inflation and make the economy like it was in 2019.
That's why he won. Good luck with that. Inflation is here to stay unless there is a recession.
I don't think trans issues was at the top of voters minds in the voting booth.
They remember the govt checks which came in 2020 and had HIS NAME as the signature even though it was OUR money, not his! They think he will give them another...and he may need to after he completes his agenda of hate.

Any democratic party politician who wants to put the blame on Transgender Americans deserves to lose their next primary election IMO.
The Democrats cannot turn their back on anyone. If they climb on the Trump bandwagon and start taking rights from minorities, they will lose a lot of Democrats. I have known and know trans people. They are good citizens and nobody has the right to demonize them.
How are the rights of transgender people being taken away? If anything Women have to share their achievements, accomplishments & safe spaces with Men.

Women wanting to maintain their sex based rights perhaps? You must be familiar with Title IX changes surely.
Not so much. Please explain.

Some are in-tact males. You may wonder how a woman can be impregnated by another inmate in a woman's prison but that has also happened.
Read Reduxx magazine and learn what happens in the real world (with your support it sounds like?)
I am sure that rape by a woman is possible and happens sometimes.
But we know men are far more likely to commit violence and sexual offences and even more so trans-identified men.
Violent, raping, crossdressing men. Fun film. Dressed to Kill.
To this day, Dressed To Kill remains the best documentary about the trans experience.
Read Reduxx and see the real life examples that have already gained access across the world. The extreme outcomes are part and parcel of the problem.
Frank that’s the ad I referred to and research said it didn’t decide who people voted for. Did they vote for Trump because of it?
Indeed I do not know. But it was a conservative talking point. I would be glad if it had no effect. This scapegoating of Trans persons must end.
That study you cited "said" nothing about "who people voted for." Please don't write like a Fox commentator.

I've moved on. This RFK Jr. thing is ambrosia to the conspiracy loons and "wellness industry" griftees of all flavors.
And the flareup in never ending outrage over the persecution of poor Alex Jones.
