Friday Thread: Donald Trump's federal indictment, charged under Espionage Act!
Prosecutors have a recording in which Trump showed "secret information" to a group while telling them it was classified and said he could have declassified it as president, but he now couldn't.
What a difference a day makes.
Just yesterday I wrote about how Trump could be indicted imminently. Just hours later he was indeed indicted by Special Counsel Jack Smith in the probe of the Mar-a-Lago documents Trump stole and refused to give back.
According to reports it is a seven-count indictment, which includes charges under the Espionage Act, including “hoarding (and possibly disseminating) stolen classified documents.”
Republicans, including Trump’s GOP presidential rivals, are screaming that this is the “weaponization” of the government while still not defending Trump directly and not having seen any indictment, as it is not unsealed.
And we’ve learned how prosecutors have a recording in which Trump waved around “secret information” at a meeting in 2021, telling the group that it’s not declassified—and said that he could have declassified it as president but hadn’t, undercutting his entire defense.
