I truly believe if republicans keep both houses this November, the real fight for LGBTQ right will be strongly challenged in the courts. My daughter is married to a wonderful woman. Like so many people who have had the fear of coming out, she married a man and had 3 boys before she finally was able to come out and be who she was meant to be. The difference in her entire personality changed. As a child she was always angry, frustrated and distant. Now, she is truly happy. I’ve never seen her so happy in 44 years. I am so happy for her. However, I fear their marriage is in jeopardy.
As a progressive, liberal mother, I feel like I failed her by not recognizing her troubled heart. I know there are other parents who have been through similar experiences.
I will fight for her rights. Pride month is so important. Just like every other marginalized group in this country, my daughter deserves to live her authentic life without fear and rejection.
It makes you wonder what nonvoters were thinking when they chose to do nothing to protect your community. Obviously there were more important issues that caused them to let this happen and stay home instead of voting.
One thing some cis LGB's fail to realize is that we transfolk also are LG & B, and have been in the trenches, fighting the Good Fight for all of us, for decades. Benjamin Franklin had it right all those centuries ago: "We must all hang together, or most assuredly we shall all hang separately."
as for celebrating straight families.... we have that all the time in every commercial, in every holiday, etc. it sounds like those people clamoring for making June about straight families, the leaders are showing a face of genuine fear. a needed compensation, a lack of confidence in their own sexuality, orientation that they need to come after a community they despise. They forget LGBTQ+ folks have always been a part of the human experience. We are not new. WE stand for who we are and know we are equal to the rest of the human society. Their states have LGBTQ+ citizens in them. They are weak thinking they need a month of celebrating. They are celebrated every day.. it is someone who has a weakness to say they are better than someone else, to be over someone else to be bigots. It won't end well.. We will still be here.
It's not everywhere. I am happy to report that Thursday evening the Haddon Township Pride parade drew thousands to Haddon Avenue in Westmont, NJ. There were LOTS of kids and parents and the full spectrum if LGBTQ folks. All kinds of groups were in the parade - school, music, business, Girl Scouts, churches. It's by far the most family-friendly Pride event I know and I wouldn't miss a year.
