How to support hard-hitting commentary, exposés of hate and corruption, and a great online community

It’s been a great experience writing and sending out The Signorile Report since last spring. Thanks to all of you for subscribing over these months and for being here.

I’m gratified that people appreciate writing that offers hard-hitting, biting political and cultural analysis and commentary. And readers have also greatly supported and shared the exposés of hate and bigotry that I report here, and have been grateful to connect with similar-minded folks in vibrant discussions in this forum.

So I’m offering you a chance to support The Signorile Report, if you’re able to do so, for roughly the cost of a premium cup of coffee at $5 a month, or $50 per year.

The Signorile Report is something I want to continue as an ad-free, reader-supported forum for a long time to come. As an author and columnist — in addition to being a radio host — my writing for many publications in the past has always been a part of my income. I’m writing just about all of my commentary and articles here exclusively now.

I’m rolling out a paid subscription, while keeping a free subscription — and most content here will still be accessible in the free subscription (more on that further down). If you’re able to be a paid subscriber and would like to support The Signorile Report, that would be great, and if you want to be a “founding member” and offer more support that’s terrific too.

It’s been liberating to see the difference we could make

For over seven years, from 2011 until early 2019, I was editor-at-large for HuffPost. In that role, in addition to editing and working on ideas with other writers, I wrote strong commentary pieces throughout the week, and published interviews with newsmakers as well as reported pieces.

I wrote articles, columns and opinion pieces in the years before that time — and also since leaving HuffPost in 2019 — for many other publications from The Washington Post, USA Today and NBC.com to The Daily Beast, The Advocate and Out.

There’s been a lot of media consolidation in recent times, however, while some publications have narrowed their scope. Important publications have sadly gone out of business, too, while others have been forced to slash budgets, as Facebook and Google have taken millions of dollars in online ad revenue.

Independent reporting and commentary that is ad-free and reader-supported is vital right now.

So since beginning The Signorile Report, I decided to write most of my pieces — my best work — here.

It’s been liberating and amazing to see the difference we could make here, with my pieces often amplified by influential people on social media, by popular bloggers, and by broadcasters and other publications, including those publications I criticize a lot —  like The New York Times, which focused in on my coverage of Amy Coney Barrett’s nomination to the Supreme Court. It’s nice seeing the attention The Signorile Report has received. And I’d like to be able for it to continue for a long time.

The Signorile Report compliments much of what I do on my SiriusXM program every weekday. It’s been great providing clips and interviews from the show here as well —including highlighting some of the right-wing callers who often represent the distorted thinking out there that we’re dealing with every day. 

A forum to connect with a community of people

The Signorile Report has also become an important forum in which to connect, where people find support. Initially, I began The Signorile Report for that reason, so that people — including many who listen to my radio program —could connect while we were all in lockdown as the pandemic took hold. It’s provided a terrific place for people to share their experiences, joining in the discussions in the open threads. I’ve loved those discussions, jumping in and joining people participating from far and wide. 

And in that way the newsletter became something much more than I intended: a community of people exchanging ideas and experiences. So again, thanks to everyone for being part of it.

How it will work

As I said, not much is going to change, except that there will be some more content: Though there will a paid subscription — at $5 per month, or $50 annually (less than a buck per week) — mostly everything will still be accessible for non-paying subscribers. Only open thread discussions, occasional personal or analysis pieces, and other kind of features, like a Q and A session, will be part of the paid subscription. 

So here’s how it works: You can purchase a paid subscription now by clicking “Support The Signorile Report” and you’ll see a few options, including: $50 for a full year; $5 monthly; or “None” (free). Right now everything remains accessible, so you don’t need to choose any of them now unless you decide you want to support the newsletter. You can also give a gift subscription by clicking below.

Come January, I’ll send out another note, reminding everyone that soon thereafter only the paid subscription will include open thread discussions and occasional other kinds of pieces.

The free subscription will still include articles and commentary pieces that I write, clips and interviews from my show, those crazy right-wing callers who I do battle with — and all the other great stuff that’s been here. Just not the discussion threads and the other occasional pieces and features.

Again, as of now, it’s all accessible, unless you’d like to switch to paid subscription to support The Signorile Report. And please write me if you have any questions, or if you are going through some tight times financially and feel you still want full access to connect in the threads. I’ll understand and make exceptions.
