New Jersey mayor arrested by ICE. Judge halts Trump's mass firings. Miller claims Trump may move to end habeas corpus, as legal experts are dubious.
In an extraordinary action, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka, who is running for New Jersey governor, was arrested at an ICE facility in his city that he and city leaders said the federal government opened without proper permits. Three members of Congress visited the facility—as is their right to visit any ICE facility for oversight at any time—while Baraka was trying to get access as well. He was arrested, however, for trespassing while on the public side of the gate, in what appeared to be an order from someone on the phone to ICE officials.

A federal judge has put a two-week pause on mass firings of federal agencies by the Trump administration, ordering two dozen agencies from moving forward with the largest purging of jobs we’ve seen the Trump administration attempt. Will this hold, and what about the tens of thousands of workers who’ve already been fired?
Stephen Miller, Trump’s belligerent deputy homeland security adviser, has now threatened that the administration is looking at suspending habeas corpus, the right of a person to challenge their detention in court, and thus giving no due process to migrants. The threat, which is alarming and would have ramifications for all Americans, is directed at judges. As Miller says, they will move forward with this if judges keep blocking them and demanding due process for migrants. Though habeas corpus has been suspended four times in history, legal experts are very skeptical Trump will be able to do it. That doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be concerned.
