Weekend Report: What's going on?
Jordan down in flames, but clown car of new speaker candidates filling up.Trump is fined, threatened with jail by NY judge. But DC judge temporarily lifts gag order. Surge in striking union workers.
Ohio Rep. Jim Jordan completely crashed and burned on his third, inexplicable try for House speaker, losing 25 Republicans and bleeding more. The Republican House Caucus then dumped him as their nominee on a secret ballot. The damage to the GOP is massive, as members stuck out their necks for nothing and the public saw a dysfunctional party day after day. And it’s only going to get worse for them as the candidates throwing their hats in the ring include people even more extreme than Jordan.
Donald Trump was finally punished for violating a gag order—a meager $5000 fine—and threatened with jail if he does it again by Justice Arthur Engoron, who is presiding over his New York fraud trial. But Judge Tanya Chutkan temporarily lifted the gag order she imposed on Trump only a week ago, giving lawyers another chance to make their case. It seems there’s no accountability for this guy! In amazingly good news, though, another of the 19 co-conspirators in the Georgia case has flipped and will testify against Trump.
And there’s terrific news for union workers as we’re seeing more strikes—and more wins for workers—than in any time in recent years, and they’re getting big raises and making other gains.
