Weekend Report: What's going on?
SCOTUS blocks deportations under Alien Enemies Act. Moody's downgrades US credit rating. GOP implosion in House as extremists demand more cuts.
In a 7-2 ruling, the Supreme Court dealt a severe blow to the Trump administration mass deportations, barring it from using the Alien Enemies Act of 1798 to deport Venezuelan migrants, saying they were not given due process. The implications are larger, as the court referenced the Kilmar Abrago Garcia case—and the Trump administration claim that it can’t return the Maryland man—and came after sharp exchanges this week as the court heard arguments from the Trump administration challenging nationwide injunctions barring Trump’s executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship.
Just as Trump is pushing massive tax cuts for the wealthy—once again creating soaring debt—Moody’s downgraded the credit rating of the US, because of its massive debt. It’s the third credit agency to do so, and coming at this time when tariffs have created chaos and could further harm the economy.
And in Congress, mega-MAGA members rebelled against Trump’s budget bill precisely because of the debt it incurs, stopping it in the budget committee. But they’re not for paring back the tax cuts, of course. They just want to cut and slash more, sending more people off of Medicaid and other programs, while the vulnerable Republicans in swing races are freaking out, since it’s going to be hard to defend this madness as it is.
