Weekend Report: What's going on?
Republicans continue losing the shutdown. Federal judge orders ICE unmasked and badged. Trump administration admits deportation are threatening nation's food supply.
Donald Trump has now ordered mass firings of federal workers in an effort to force Democrats to cave on the shutdown. Yet it has only emboldened Democrats further as House Speaker Mike Johnson got scorched by voters on C-SPAN and expressed the GOP fears of next week’s No Kings protests by calling them “hate America” rallies. A Trump administration document shows Trump’s government is terrified of food shortages and the impact on agriculture because of mass deportations, something critics have warned about and which even farmers have desperately complained to Trump about. It notes that, contrary to the agriculture secretary’s claims that Americans will fill the jobs of farm workers, the jobs are vacant. “Unless the Department acts immediately to provide a source of stable and lawful labor,” the document says, “this threat will grow.”
