Weekend Report: What's going on?
Trump trapped in massive abortion flip-flop. Harris campaign begins 50-stop abortion rights bus tour. CNN Harris-Walz interview is glaring example of why candidates avoid corporate media.
Donald Trump has finally crashed and burned on abortion rights. Trying to avoid the issue for months, idiotically looking for some sort of middle ground, he became unhinged watching Kamala Harris and other speakers slam him on the issue at the Democratic National Convention, and impulsively responded. His announcement this week that he’d mandate the government or insurance companies to pay for IVF for all Americans if he’s elected—a massive, socialist government program—was laughable. Then he came out for the Florida abortion rights amendment on Thursday only to face angry backlash from Christian nationalists. He quickly backtracked and said he’d vote “no” on Friday.
The Harris campaign then made sure he wore his “no” vote: “Donald Trump just made his position on abortion very clear: He will vote to uphold an abortion ban so extreme it applies before many women even know they are pregnant.” And the campaign announced a 50-stop reproductive rights bus tour that will begin in Palm Beach, Donald Trump’s home turf.
Dana Bash’s interview with Kamala Harris and Tim Walz on CNN was hyped by the corporate media as some sort of big test. If it was that, Harris did well and again proved she’s ready to be president. But once again, the interview showed how the corporate media has normalized Trump and right-wing talking points and why Democrats will avoid it as much as they can if they really want to reach voters, As corporate media interviews offer few things the American people really want to know about.
