Weekend Report: What’s going on?

The results of the Democratic blowout keep coming in. GOP’s civil war over white supremacist Fuentes. Economy teeters, consumer confidence plunges, and Trump starves people.

Tuesday’s elections were big landslides in the most noted races in New York, New Jersey, California and Virginia and in some closely watched races such as for Pennsylvania’s Supreme Court. But as the results come in and the news gets reported out, it’s clear the wins were big even at the most local level in towns and counties across America, and this was a massive blue wave that rolled over the entire country.

Republicans are mired in a civil war over whether to mainstream white supremacist and Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes, who Tucker Carlson gave a platform in an interview. While some Republicans like Ted Cruz have spoken out and condemned the interview as the Heritage Foundation’s Kevin Roberts defended Carlson, other Republicans are silent, fearful of Carlson. Bringing Fuentes into the MAGA mainstream is toxic for the GOP, but even JD Vance is indebted to Carlson and he increasingly needs those young nazis for any election campaign.

The Consumer Confidence Index is at an all-time low, and the latest industry jobs numbers that we have show figures not seen since the Great Recession. The Trump shutdown has fueled this, besides nine months of tariffs. All the warning signs are pointing to an economic downturn, and yet Trump has continued to double down and last night urged the Supreme Court to help him keep starving people, denying SNAP benefits. The court granted a temporary hold, ordering an appeals court deliberating on the matter to decide in the next couple of days.
