Weekend Report: What's happening?
Democrats eviscerate GOP on abortion. Trump and Johnson push federal voter suppression law. GOP forces vote on "Refrigerator Freedom Act," while stripping human rights.
Vice President Kamala Harris went to Tucson on Friday, where she gave a speech condemning the “Trump abortion bans,” like the one in Arizona, which took women back to 1864. It’s part of an energized, unstoppable march this week by Democrats on an issue that has the GOP—Donald Trump included—running in fear, unable to figure out what to do. The entire election, up and down the ballot, has been transformed.
Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson, meanwhile, had a press conference at Mar-a-Lago on Friday to push an unnecessary law they claim will make it illegal for non-citizens to vote—when it already is illegal and there’s no evidence of any problem. The goal, however, is threefold: 1) to telegraph to Trump’s base that undocumented people did vote in 2020; 2) to further demonize immigrants; and 3) perhaps most alarmingly, to actually make it harder for all Americans to vote in 2024.
And this seems like it is straight out of the Onion, but I kid you not. Having gotten nothing done in the House, Republicans are rushing through a whole bunch of bills next week—like the “Liberty in Laundry Act” and the “Refrigerator Freedom Act”—that are meant to '“prohibit the federal government from putting new energy conservation standards” in place. Yes, refrigerators get freedom and liberty, while women are brought back to 1874. Wait until you hear the names of the other bills.
