Weekend Report: What's happening?
Outrage over special counsel's political hit on Biden. Reckless, sensational corporate media seizes on it. White House, Democrats fight back.
After a week in which Republicans in Congress hit rock bottom, the past 48 hours have been jarring—and angering—for Democrats and progressives: President Biden faced a politically motivated hit job by a Trump-appointed special counsel who gratuitously questioned his mental acuity and memory—in statements those close to Biden say are completely false—clearly trying to give the GOP ammunition.
The special counsel not only went far beyond his scope—he’s not a mental health professional—and as legal experts pointed out, his report was also sloppy, contradictory, and clearly motivated by political bias or fear of repercussions from Republicans or both. How did Attorney General Merrick Garland allow this to happen?
And how did the corporate media fall right into Special Counsel Robert Hur’s trap, blowing up the report and handing a gift to the GOP when its ultimate conclusions clear the president of any wrongdoing?
Yet, while there have been lots of comparisons to James Comey’s report on Hillary Clinton in 2016, will this play out the same way? There are a few reasons why this incident may be different, starting with both President Biden and Democrats hitting back forcefully and angrily.
