The January 6th Committee released its final report late on Thursday, and the reverberations — including regarding what’s in it, and what’s not in it— continue. And a lot of people are asking why more political figures aren’t referred for criminal prosecutions to the Justice Department.
More infighting in the GOP as Mitch McConnell, yet again, tries to cleave off Donald Trump. How many times have we seen this before?
And the House passed the omnibus spending bill, which includes a historic revision of the Electoral Count Act — so there can’t even an attempt at not certifying a presidential election — as well as $44 billion in Ukraine aide, protections for pregnant people and breastfeeding moms, huge sums pumped into Pell grants for low-income students, and money to help veterans and give emergency relief to farmers.
It was House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s final act as the leader of the House, sending the bill to President Biden’s desk. Minority leader Kevin McCarthy however railed: “This is a monstrosity that is one of the most shameful acts I've ever seen in this body." That gave us a preview of what’s to come as the GOP takes the leadership of the House in a few days.
