Weekend thread: What's going on?
More fallout from disastrous week of Supreme Court decisions. Is marriage equality next? And Ron DeSantis attacks Trump--for being too pro-gay!--with an unhinged ad that shows how dangerous he is.
Reading through the opinions in the cases the Supreme Court handed down this week, it becomes clear that the majority knows it’s on thin ice, as it spends much of its time on the defensive, spending an inordinate amount of time lashing out at the brilliant dissents.
That was clear in the 303 Creative case, in which Neal Gorsuch sought to mock Sonja Sotomayor. One key omission in his decision on a case all about same-sex marriages, by the way, was any mention or affirmation of the Obergefell marriage equality ruling, which Sotomayor references at length. What could that mean?
Let’s hear it for Justices Sotomayor, Jackson, and Kagan. They did a lot of heavy lifting, and they weren’t playing around. They slammed the majority hard, saying the Supreme Court violated the Constitution itself, and they had the receipts. Dissents are important, and they make sure the majority doesn’t get off easy.
And Ron DeSantis has released an ad that actually blatantly, proudly touts his homophobic, transphobic actions—using media headlines criticizing him and comments of progressive pundits pointing to his draconian actions—and attacks Trump, the most anti-LGBTQ president in history, for being too pro-LGBTQ! And there’s a lot more bizarro, creepy, and scary stuff going on in this ad.
