Weekend thread: What's going on?
1/6 committee subpoenas fraudulent electors. Another prominent anti-vaxxer died of Covid. Joni Mitchell joins Neil Young, dumps Spotify.
It’s the weekend and that means a thread for you all to join in on discussion of whatever you’d like, or some of the topics in the news.
The January 6th Select Committee has now issued subpoenas for fake electors in seven states who clearly engaged in a mass conspiracy to overturn the election. It was good to see the Department of Justice open an investigation last week. Now the 1/6 committee, which has ramped up in recent weeks and is giving me a lot of hope, is on it:
The move comes as two Democratic attorneys general have asked federal prosecutors in recent days to investigate whether crimes were committed in assembling or submitting the “alternate” Trump slates. Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco this week confirmed prosecutors’ consideration of what she termed the “fraudulent elector certifications.”
In a statement Friday, Rep. Bennie G. Thompson (D-Miss.), chairman of the select committee investigating the Capitol attack, said the panel had obtained information that multiple advisers to former president Donald Trump or his campaign had used the actions of the bogus electors to “justify delaying or blocking the certification of the election during the Joint Session of Congress on January 6th, 2021.”
“The Select Committee is seeking information about attempts in multiple states to overturn the results of the 2020 election, including the planning and coordination of efforts to send false slates of electors to the National Archives,” Thompson said. “We believe the individuals we have subpoenaed today have information about how these so-called alternate electors met and who was behind that scheme.”
This could lead to felony charges, including wire fraud for transmitting the information to members of Congress. I think we’re just at the tip of the iceberg on this one. It’s tied to Donald Trump and John Eastman trying to get Mike Pence not to certify the election, and could begin to crack things open.
Robert LaMay, a Washington State trooper who infamously make a video refusing to comply with Governor Jay Inslee’s vaccine mandate — and told the governor to “kiss my ass” — has died of Covid-19:
LaMay started his career in 1999, and worked all over the state. He retired last October instead of getting vaccinated.
“We don’t do vaccines,” he told Fox News in an interview last year after he quit, referring to himself and his family. “We don’t do flu shots or any of that stuff.”
LaMay told Fox that he obtained a religious vaccine exemption, but that he decided that required changes in his job due to his unvaccinated status were unacceptable.
Fox News and the rest of the anti-vax propagandists continue to kill people.
And Sarah Palin should be banned from New York City:
The former Alaska governor returned to Elio's restaurant Wednesday night and dined outdoors just days after it was revealed she tested positive for COVID-19. Palin, who has touted the fact that she is not vaccinated, was seen dining inside the Upper East Side Italian restaurant on Saturday, before her diagnosis. The city requires proof of vaccination to eat indoors.
And WNYC/Gothamist confirmed the former vice presidential candidate dined al fresco Tuesday night at Campagnola, another Italian restaurant in the area.
The recklessness is astounding, but it’s also about defying Democrats at all costs, even if it means putting oneself or others in danger. Former wacko congresswoman Michele Bachmann said on Fox News that Palin should be “commended” for going out with Covid-19 and just “trying to act like a normal human being.”
Yep, normal means trying to spread a dangerous virus.
The legendary Joni Mitchell isn’t having it, joining Neil Young who this week removed all of his music from Spotify because the platform hosts the podcast of Joe Rogan, who has spread dangerous misinformation about vaccines. Mitchell wrote on her website:
Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue.
So there are some heroes. We are getting socked with snow in New York City as a blizzard is hitting the entire East Coast. Perfect day to stay in and listen to Joni Mitchell and Neil Young while baking bread, right?
