Weekend thread: What's going on?

Reckless Gov. Abbott of Texas caught lying about shooting response. Trump and Cruz lie, insult victims at NRA convention. McCarthy refuses to comply with 1/6 subpoena, knowing he'll be caught lying.

Governor Greg Abbott claims he was “misled” by Texas law enforcement when he praised them early on in their response to the Uvalde, Texas massacre — only for the whole world to later see the that police didn’t enter the Robb Elementary School while the shooter was still firing and allowed children to die.

But Abbott is lying. The Texas Department of Safety has been overseeing the response and the details around it from the beginning. They knew something was wrong because for two days they were putting out confusing, suspicious messaging, saying more investigation needed to happen, clearly hoping to stall the media.

And those officials, who answer to the governor, surely were reporting back what they were learning. But Abbott was desperate to shift the story from the proliferation of assault weapons — which he has exacerbated, loosening gun restrictions in Texas — to the issue of security and law enforcement as the solution. It all blew up in his face when officials admitted what happened.
