It was a surprise attack that showed an intelligence failure on Israel’s part, with the death toll of civilians and Israeli military so far at 100, with hundreds wounded. There are also reports of hundreds of Palestinian deaths and thousands of civilians wounded in Gaza as Israel retaliates and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declares “we are at war” and vows further military response.
