Weekend thread: What's happening?
Arizona judge reinstates near total abortion ban from 19th century. GOP cuts loose Ohio Republican who lied about military service. Poll shows DeSantis' cruel migrant stunt backfired.
Yet another horrendous ramification of the overturning of Roe v. Wade has unfolded. A judge in Arizona has ruled that a ban on nearly all abortions from the mid-1800s — before Arizona was a U.S. state — can go into effect. It’s a horrible circumstance for those needing abortions, and it’s sent a jolt of fear through the GOP, as Democrats are surging on the issue and Arizona has several competitive races.
The GOP, which is seeing its red wave evaporate, was forced to abandon a House candidate in Ohio in a district they had a shot of taking from a Democrat — after they’d gerrymandered it. Lying about election fraud and attacking the Capitol —- as this candidate did i — is fine to the GOP, I guess. But claiming to be a combat veteran when it’s not true apparently crosses the line.
And we might see Ron DeSantis and other Republicans take a hit for coercing migrants onto buses and planes and sending them to blue states as a poll shows only one-third of Americans back this action — and only half of Republicans support it.
