I love it. Let them keep eating their own. At least if Matt is spending his time doing this there are many mothers who won't have to worry quite so much about their teenage daughters going to the mall with their friends.

Good one Mark. Sounds very similar to an earlier time when that 38 YO Alabama DA (later a judge in black robe) was banned from an Alabama mall for creepy lecherous behavior around teen gals 20+ years younger. Teen’s moms had sigh of relief after that mall ban. That guy is also another Biblical literalist/purist. Seems like their 2+2 does not always = 4.

The hypocrisy of Republicans, as usual, is breathtaking. But what about Reagan's long ago admonition to Republicans to not speak ill of their fellow Republicans? They are eating their own at this point! Where will this end?

Clearly lots of self loathing there... using his power and influence to injure people like himself is just heinous.

I saw Tim Miller's post last night and thought, "who?" about Smith. I looked around a little and saw a pic of him with Schock and thought, "oh, okay." Gaetz is slime, but I still say, "Out away!"

This hits on a couple of levels in watching the Republican in-fighting and eating their own (or is it "eating their young" as the former guy says?), which is popcorn-eating fun, but if it outs a hypocrite--even one who had been under the radar (or my radar as least)--I'm all for it.

I have evolved over time on my views on outing. Back in the days of OUTWEEK and its controversy, I wasn't out yet, so I wasn't sure where I stood, but I would sneak looks at the magazine on the newstand for all the wrong reasons--I wanted to see the more gossipy aspect of finding out who might be gay.

I think my hesitancy toward outing was fear of being outed myself. When I came out, I had less to fear and I was all for it with the hypocrites, but still protective of those who weren't ready and for whom it might not be safe.

I credit you, Michelangelo, and your book QUEER IN AMERICA for being very helpful on my journey.

As for Smith, let's see if this outing has any resonance or if it's ignored. I'm thinking it will largely be ignored. I'd be happy to be proved wrong.

As for Gaetz? He's still slime. I caught part of his interview with Ari Melber last night and I have mixed feelings about it. I like that Melber gives the other side a chance to respond, but I also hate that it can also normalize them. In the part I saw, Gaetz was coming across pretty rationally. I still had to leave the room and do something else for a bit until he was gone, so I don't know the final impression the audience was left with--or whether any lies were perpetuated.

Ari tends to be pretty good pushing back. Peter Navarro is a prime example. I'm glad that I missed Gaetz's interview, though.

This conjures a scene from Mississippi Burning, after Agent Ward finally agrees to do things Agent Anderson's way. They set up the Klan by "arranging" a meeting in the middle of the day in a church.

When the Grand Dragon shows up in his Cadillac, he quickly realizes that, but not until they unwittingly reveal who the weakest link is. The camera pulls back to a tape recorder sitting in between the two agents in the front seat of a nearby car as they record the conversation.

"Looks like the rattlesnakes are starting to commit suicide," Agent Anderson says.

Back in St. Olaf, er, Obama's 2nd term, there was a Rep from Illinois... damn, history does indeed repeat itself. The enemy of my enemy is my friend... and fratboy Gaetz is determined we get breadcrumbs instead of a scoop. Whew, enough damn cliches (get to poinrt, Edith). Smith opened himself to be outed and this being the 21st century, no need to be coy anymore. Nothing new about voting against your own interests to cover your lifestyle and gaining enmity from your community. Smith has himself to blame for building a not so elaborate closet. To each his own. Just consider your constituents who you are accountable to and accept your ruse is over. You take them for rubes and now they'll insure you don't represent them anymore. Hope it was worth it...

Arnie, I think it's OK to be gay if you're a Repub, closeted, and you give a lot of $$ to the GOP.

It's going to really piss me off when Lindsey Graham retires from politics un-imprisoned and writes a self-serving memoir finally outing himself....

Gaetz is a lying piece of trash. If his father wasn't in FL politics and VERY wealthy, he'd have been in prison long ago.

Both things can be true. Gaetz is a lying slime ball, & a number Republicans are hypocrites when they deny who they are (which in this day & age should not be an issue - except in Republican politics), then vote against LBGTQ+ civil rights.

Awful people whether they're outing (even though they themselves have a questionable relationship back home) like Gaetz, or voting against their own interests like Smith apparently is. So much harm from these cowards.

That said, after reading this I'm happy I now have a new vacation destination to visit in Canoa Quebrada.

Michelangelo has taught me over the years that outing someone who has power and is actively working to make live harder for LGBTQ people is not the same as outing a regular citizen.

Expand full comment

I can understand that. If someone is virulently anti-gay, yet gay themselves, and hurting the lives of LGBTQ people, it's fine to out them as the hypocrites they are.

Expand full comment

It wasn't always that clear to me. I remember back in 1989 when I first heard of Michelangelo, it was very controversial. But he stuck to those guns and eventually helped me understand it as a legit form of activism.

I respect Michaelangelo and I've been reading him since the 90's. It is activism and a good way to smoke out hypocrites (plenty in the GOP).
