MAGA callers try to make sense of Trump’s downfall

And it’s glorious. One actually agreed with me on some things--while he rationalized. The other is still deep in the tank, engaged in combat with me (never a good idea).

A Friday treat! MAGA callers to my SiriusXM show desperately trying to make sense of the world as Trump is sinking fast and they face a huge dose of reality.

All over the media today are stories of Trump as a lame duck — even in conservative publications—the MAGA anger and division, and the White House is in a crisis on issues from affordability to the Epstein files. This from the New York Times is an example, “America First? Some Trump Supporters Worry That’s No Longer the Case.”

President Trump has been dining with Wall Street bigwigs. He has embarked on an opulent revamp of the White House at a time when Americans are struggling to pay their bills. He has expressed support for granting visas to skilled foreigners to take jobs in the United States. He approved a $20 billion bailout for Argentina, helping a foreign government and wealthy investors at a moment when the U.S. government was shut down.

For a president who returned to office promising to avoid foreign entanglements, make life more affordable and ensure that available jobs go to American citizens, it has been a significant departure from the expectations of his loyal base. And it is starting to open a rift with his supporters who were counting on a more aggressively populist agenda.

I’m obviously a progressive host on SiriusXM but I usually get calls from MAGA a few times a week who call to disagree. But they’d been radio silent, especially last week after the big wins for Democrats.

This week, as the stories of Trump flailing permeated the news, I dared some of them to call in to defend him.

Mark from New York called to say that he had to agree with much of my criticism of the Trump—but then he tried rationalizing by saying Trump is only in his first year and needed a more time.

Sorry, that dog don’t hunt! And I had to tell him, though I have to say it was a civil discussion—and some admissions on his part—which is scarce with MAGA. Listen in here.

Then Tom from North Carolina called, and showed he’s totally in the tank, a MAGA super-fan cultist, who is completely devoted to the debilitating dictator. This one became some old-fashioned MAGA combat, as he pushed ugly anti-immigrant blather. Just a reminder that there are those who will never abandon him.
