When not doing that, they would sneak into the abandoned piers on the Hudson River and surreptitiously watch gay men have sex. I never understood why they did that. "Oh, man, that's disgusting! Let me look...."
I understood even less why they beat up gays. To prove they were straight, they said.
So why don't you just go out with a girl, I asked.
"Because that's sissy, man!" shouted the eighth graders, who then beat me up.
This little gang was led by a young man who had nothing to lose -- he suffered from Hodgkin's Disease, so he had utter contempt for the world. He led them into these one-sided battles.
However, one day, the gang jumped two gay men emerging from a gym on Christopher Street. These two chaps were NOT stereotypes. They were into lifting weights, physical training, and karate. Assailed by 12-year-olds, they coolly sent the whole lot to St. Vincent's Hospital with various injuries.
Watching this scene, Mr. Hodgkin's ran like hell. He didn't "withdraw" like British troops or even "retreat" like American troops...he ran like hell, back to his apartment in Westbeth, to smoke weed and listen to something called "Quadrophenia." That was the end of his gang, of course.
However, to this day, I am fearful of walking around that portion of Greenwich Village, afraid that Mr. Hodgkin's might pop out of that building and -- as he did when we were in the eighth grade -- karate-kick me down the block.
