When Obama was elected, I was very proud to be an American. I believed that racism was minimal and that people had progressed into a decent, open-minded society. Thanks to the orange Nazi, hatred, homophobia, misogyny, racism, and violence are fashionable and "patriotic.' I hope I live long enough to see our country restored to normalcy.

Hi DB, I was same mind, thought we were really getting somewhere nationally, we had entered the 21st century and it was a new and better world, as might be seen in Star Trek’s far future time. I was wrong, naive. No more. It’s a classic example of hard won half step forward, backlash, two steps back. It’s odd isn’t it?? So many people have a hard time tolerating “change” while simultaneously living in a world proven over eons of history is in a state of some level of constant change. You’d think they’d be weary of constantly pushing back against the inevitable. “Tilting at windmills”. I get idea their thought of “change” is rather pessimistic, almost guaranteed to be something worse, not better. I feel it’s rather likely to be something better, improved, more optimistic. And there we have it, some building block base differences between “conservative” and “progressive”. Leaning towards pessimism “worse” vs leaning towards optimism “better”. In a nutshell.

Yes, Rick, thats why the orange, deranged crime boss says Make America Great Again. Again, when? With cross-burnings, when women couldn't vote, when gays had to hide in closets. What other injustices should we bring back?

Yes, DB, like, No interracial marriage, women cannot get loans nor have own credit cards, no such thing as no-fault divorce, that’s only like 50 some years ago “great again”. Is hard to believe in my lifetime segregation ran high, signs on bathrooms and over water fountains and the like. I so respect “The Rat Pack” Sinatra, Martin, someone else, sorry someone else, and how they pushed the envelop that Sammy Davis Jr would get same hotels as they and walk in the FRONT door. Beatles early on and a large concert in Florida, from Siri: “The Beatles performed a concert in Florida only once. And they were willing to cancel the Sept. 11, 1964, date at Jacksonville's Gator Bowl when they learned the audience was to be racially segregated. Bully for those forward leaning folk.

To the caller Steven and his views on abortion and "Christianity", what about the Constitution? Trump wants to get rid of it and sign off on a total abortion ban, so my guess is that he will probably vote for him again.

The first story I saw about the Pride flag murder was on Foxnews, which is perversely ironic, since their isn't a media outlet in the country that has done more than Foxnews (with their daily tirades against all things LGBT) to plant the seeds for these horrific crimes against gays, trans folks, and our allies.

When I saw the original story, it seemed pretty clear to me what happened. I do not know what the way forward is for this country, but we need to find it pretty soon. Beyond this being an obvious hate crime, it certainly seems inspired by the mounting pile of circumstantial evidence composed of sometimes vague (and sometimes not) hate speech. Beyond that, this is yet another story of escalating gun violence in America. Anyone who is not seriously offended by politicians posing with AR-15 rifles, smiling, while we suffer more mass killings is simply not capable of empathy. The number of people who are survivors of mass shootings is growing by the day, and they will not be stopped because their voices are growing in number and volume.

I respect the 2nd Amendment as it has generally been interpreted. At this point in our history, I fully understand a person wanting to exercise their rights and own a weapon for defense of their home, property, and family. Absolutely. What we cannot have is what we are seeing and living, which is a sick fantasy world of guns and a religious devotion to weaponry. I do not have all the answers, but I know a start might be not allowing citizens to acquire the arms and ammunition to equip a full platoon, if not a battalion.

Shit Mike. The murder of a good person, wife and mother of NINE, likely many grandchildren, possibly great grandkids, this is so tragically sad for the family and friends, the nation as whole. Not a 21st century we imagined. Just tender age 27 is red flag. Seems it usually takes longer to fester such hate and intolerance. I googled “pastor calls for execution of LGBT” and there are many saying such anti-Christian things. That’s just so wrong on a galactic universe scale. Sad. Be safe you all in the community. I have multiple nephews nieces and great nephew to worry over. Just a flag of tolerance, support. This is so wrong.

"Abortion and same-sex marriage are both immoral and are design (sp) to destroy humanity one by one."

Let's take it away...

"Both immoral:" OK; he has the right to feel that. I disagree, but he has the right--as long as he makes no laws based on his view of morality, he has the right.

"to destroy humanity:" So, here is your drama queen. He should have gone on Drag Race.

"One by one:" This is illness

But the one that got me was

"Design(ed)" Well, I'd like to meet the person who designed gay sex and abortion.

Do these people even think about the words they write?

These people are indoctrinated at an early age in toxic forms of religion and culture that espouses "holy" wars and violence against "sinners". They embrace their guns and bibles (mostly Old Testament and the book of Revelation), which makes absolutely no sense to anyone but them. According to reporting, the cultists are more inclined to follow their orange leader than even their pastor!

Sakina, I think of a large % as “Old Testament Christians”, solely interested in the angry, vengeful, hate filled version of God. Not the NT love your neighbor, help the widow and orphan, welcome the stranger, give unto Caesar what is due Caesar (taxes), turn the other cheek, yadda yadda yadda. That is “Jesus spewed a lot of liberal peace and love hippie clap trap, not war and conquer your enemies with massive weaponry/fire power, strength”.

Abortion is the oldest form of birth control. People were aborting fetuses thousands of years ago. It wasn't safe, but it was the only option.

Absolutely, or they simply discarded newborns who were unwanted. Some people still do it today, so we know the practice existed.

Thanks, Rick. I thought we overcame all of this sh**, but it has reared its ugly head again. I was in Viet Nam war protests in the 60s as a college student, burned my bra in the 70s and fought for gay rights in the 90s when both of my kids came out. Now we're back to 1950. Disgraceful!!!!

I'm Jewish. What you call the "Old Testament" is what we call the Tanakh and is our holy book. It does not belong to Christians. Christianity has been nearly 2000 years of vile antisemitic lies. It has a history of murdering people in the name of Jesus and torturing those who will not convert. When I hear about "Christian Love" I think "There is no hate quite like Christian love.

I have to deal with their crap not only as an LGBT person but as a Jew.

DeSatan and the Orange Monster have returned us to the point of civil war, once again. This country continues to slide further and further downward. This latest event only shows that the fight for equality in this country has slid backward in the last 10 years and is going to require us doubling our efforts to return to a path that mirrors the words of the framers of the Constitution "equal rights for ALL under the law".

What happens if we have another economic downturn?

This is the best job market in 50 years. Anyone who wants a job or wants to find a better one can easily do that.

The 6% interest rate is nothing compared to 21% back in 1980. We had two recessions in a row, 1980 and 1982. President Reagan was shot and had to have emergency surgery.

The MAGA's think retuning to the past will somehow be better. Right now is the best it's going to get as far as the economy is concerned.

Social issues are much worse in a recession. People lose their jobs and families are stressed leading to domestic violence and divorce. Crime and theft increase too.

They all sound like a bunch of spoiled brats to me.

Hate to like this column because of the senseless act of violence. After the polling showing magats trust trumpanzee more than their pastors, cannot help but notice that the expected J6 mob violence will not surface again but instead be sporadic extremist acts to solidify the fear they engender. With the degradation of the national discourse fanned by elected gop who know they can't win with ideas so they espouse culture war issues to keep the division afloat. The fact that a mere Pride flag caused a murder of an ally is just the beginning folks. Time to hit the gun ranges and learn to shoot straight...

DK’s comment “Anyone who is not seriously offended by politicians posing with AR-15 rifles, smiling, while we suffer more mass killings is simply not capable of empathy” definitely says it all. Seeing MTG posing with her family on a Christmas card pointing Ar-15’s speaks to the fact that she and her ilk promote hate over love and evil over goodness. The “freedom” they seek is only for elitists like themselves.

Empathy is not part of their being. And it’s gut wrenching that their followers support them, and it’s bc they are exactly like them.

We need to constantly remind those people in our lives who are cult driven that if you support MAGA, you also support the “gun posers” of the world.
