You nailed it, that’s the most infuriating thing, the press commenting everything as if it were normal and bothsidizing us to death. Obviously part of it is ownership by shitler allies, for others it’s fear of retaliation. But I am still aghast at the normalization of crazy by those irresponsible assholes. His insane behavior has been met with so little resistance that now the fact that we are sending federal thugs to randomly murder citizens in all impunity, committing international high sea piracy and murders, attacking, kidnapping and murdering people on foreign sovereign land, and openly considering seizing territory belonging to countries that were allies until yesterday. WHAT THE FUCK.
I wonder if anybody has tracked America's division with the rise of Fox for a correlation. My point is we can't keep American democracy in the face of disinformation and how much Fox set the stage for the rise of Trump, They will keep on doing it because they know there are people out who will always believe. The big stink about keeping right wing speakers off campus became a very important issue years back to the right. They wanted give fascism a platform as a viable form of government because no matter who argues against it there will always be Americans ready to embrace it. Images that used to horrify people as a warning are now cheered by the violent right and embraced.
I don't think democracy can survive when one entertainment channel Fox deliberately dividing and undermining unity in America. Free speech doesn't shut the liars up and the old saw that the answer to bad speech is more speech. How much will be enough to actually solve a problem. When Trump is gone Fox and its poison will still be here. You have Murdoch's WSJ criticizing Trump while Fox frames murders as being in blue states, but never red ones furthering division at every little opportunity. When we defeated Hitler we ended his propaganda. Try and imagine dismantling Hitler's propaganda mill from the inside by the German people and you can see how locked in we are to giving the enemy from within, Fox the absolute right to lie. Imagine if we let Putin start a network here. Would it be any different than what Murdoch is doing now? Free speech and a free press have failed to stop fascism but we keep giving Fox free rein to keep the fascists lies going.
Assuming we ever regain control, let’s hope the lesson is learned. No more Merrick Garland bullshit. There will be 2 years in which work can be done to swiftly punish and incapacitate the criminals and address all the weak points that allowed these monsters to make a mockery of law and justice and shit all over the constitution.
I want to see the entire trump family, rubio, graham, kennedy, all these fucking fuckers behind bars for life. Fox “news”, oann, outlawed. Citizens united revoked. Only then will we be safe. Let it be said that citizens united is the entry point that made all this disgrace possible.
Nah. Trump is going to pre-pardon everyone in his administration before he leaves, or in some other way make it difficult for us to try and convict them. We need to concentrate on enlarging the Supreme Court, and voting the WHOLE Voting Rights Act back into being, along with new No-money-from-corporations-in politics law.
I agree on Citizens United but it has been 15 years for people to forget about it along with the awareness that SCOTUS hovers over America like vultures always ready to shut something down through legislating from the bench. I have some questions about the staying power of Democrats when they have a famously stayed home through elections. We need maximum turnout cycle after cycle to maintain whatever power we have gained, otherwise a GOP Congress will undo it all again. If liberals lose focus which is pretty common we are in trouble again. My gripe about Fox extends to whoever the next Trump is that they will lie for and spread disinformation and change people's and continue to divide the country. We know they can do that.
It’s American apathy caused by so many factors. The fact that a convicted felon was “elected” president of the US says it all.
Non violent protest from EVERYONE who wants to protect our democracy is seemingly the only way out (and even that’s not guaranteed unless it’s consistent.) Call your local rep 202 224-3121 at the Capitol switchboard and tell them; no more funding for ICE (vote no in two weeks) no more discussion of taking over Greenland, open the Epstein files, or whatever issue you want addressed. Be proactive, DO something.
Hi Larry, yes. Defund ICE, and nonviolent protests are the way to go, and voting in overwhelmingly large numbers this year. Drumpf will most likely still try to use the Insurrection Act even if there is NO violence. He must be stopped.
The insurrection act is what we all worry about Sakina, but worry never helps anyone, right? Staying non violent gives him no legal reason to invoke it (and there may be other legal reasons he wouldn’t be able to use it.) Getting everyone registered and getting out the vote also makes it harder for him to use it. And republicons need to speak out too.
You are so right Sakina. We all need to channel your ancestors and Dr. King. They were very strong people. I’m very worried about the orange menace invoking the insurrection act too, but peaceful protests and demonstrations like the people who fought so hard for the right to vote, or attend decent schools, etc is what we all need to practice and preach.
They rely so much on the apathy. And you're right about protest. the more they see people out there the more they realize where they American public is.
Have a wonderful vacation my friend. This nightmare will be ongoing for awhile, I'm afraid every day deeper and deeper. Something's gotta give. Repugs growing a spine, perhaps?!?
As I think most of you are aware, Blue States, especially the Successful Blue Donor States, are under increasingly heavy attack by the current administration. The Convicted Felons private Army is running amuck in Minnesota and Gov. Tim Walz and Jacob Frey are under investigation for conspiracy to impede immigration agents. In a real court, this should get about as far as most of the administrations pursuits in similar matters get, nowhere.
Minnesota seems to be the current focus of the administrations attacks on the Successful Blue Donor States. As I showed last week, Minnesota is a very successful state. It is one of the 9 Successful Blue Donor States that have, over 40 plus years of data, subsidized the Red Welfare States that put the current administration in office.
Initially, the administration called Gov. Walz 'corrupt'. They probably figured out that trying to establish any kind of 'corruption' in a Very Successful Blue Donor State might be challenging, if not impossible. Now they are trying go after the words of Walz and Frey. I would guess any decent lawyer would start by pointing out the current administration claims that the words of the CF had nothing to do with the Jan. 6. Or any of his other words having nothing to do with events that occurred shortly after. I would say the administration itself has established the defense for Walz and Frey. In a real court, this should die a quick death.
A war is on, and it's aimed at the Successful Blue Donor States. We should be shouting the success of these states at every opportunity. The data backs this up. The Red Welfare States are Failed States. Very simple. The data backs this up. I see no issue with calling the Red Welfare States Failures. Failures that put the current administration in office. Failures that seem intent on crushing Success. Seems counterintuitive, but that's the way it looks to me.
The U.S. is being run by Failure. Unfortunately for us, the Failures have the 'Army'. What do we have? Some judges here and there, but what backs up any of those decisions? Nothing. We have nothing. They have the 'Army'. And a boat load of money for that 'Army'. How do you deal with physical confrontations when their goal is to incite physical confrontations and use their superior force.
We're fucked in physical confrontations. We can however, start broadcasting the clear success of the Blue Donor States and the chronic failure of the Red Welfare States. The data is right there. Use it. Change the conversation. Or at least attempt to. What do we have to lose? Don't react to everything the administration does. Go after the failed states. Not only do the Blue States subsidize these states, Red states are the source of much of our national debt. Everything beyond what Blue States subsidize is Debt.
Blue States have higher taxes. Ok, why might that be? Maybe because the Blue Donor Sates have to make up for all the money they give to Red States. How else are they going to do that? Higher taxes.
We have all sorts of material to go after the failure and corruption of Red Sates. Lets start changing the conversation. It's worth try, no? Don't feel guilty about attacking these states. They've pretty much set themselves up for attack. Who knows, maybe we'll even have elections in November.
Why are so many Americans or American institutions supporting and normalizing this man and the now many bigots and fascists behind him? I think that’s the deepest problem we have: too many want this to happen.
Yes, I understand the “one-third” thinking. One third voted for this man, one third for Kamala Harris and the remaining one third just didn’t vote, for one reason or another. So we say there is more of us than of them. Perhaps it’s true but I think it’s misleading and is not my experience, though I have no proof for my feelings or experience.
It seems to me that the numbers are about fifty-fifty. About half the people want this to happen and have normalized it. That’s why it’s happening with such ugly and brutal presence.
What is it with Americans that this is taking place? As Mike suggests from France, is this the age-old “ugly American” phenomenon? Are there just too many ugly Americans, and if so, what can we do about it?
I don’t mean this to be just an exercise in philosophical thought. We have to keep fighting, organizing and showing up one way or another. But couldn’t we also keep this question about “how come so many?” on the table and see if some insight to help restore decency and democracy might show itself as action to take?
Maybes some guests on the show to take on this question of “Why normalization, why so many?”
May Renee Good’s inspiration and Minneapolis’s success prevail. May her family and friends find the guidance they need.
I was just about to post something similar before I read your post, Richard. This normalization is the result of many factors. I believe that a major one is that the person called "President of the United States of America" has been given leeway and respect from nearly everyone for most of our history. The press colluded in covering up for many presidents. Then, after Murdoch and Ailes started Fox, Democratic presidents and presidential candidates were constantly under attack, while Republicans were not. That trickled into the mainstream press and then both-sidesism was born. It's only gotten worse from there, with the former GOP becoming full-on MAGA. Other factors include how news outlets had to make money instead of being there to report the facts. News is often secondary to opinion and sensationalism. Other factors contributing to this normalization are too numerous to mention, but denial is another one. Many people have been in denial about how bad this could get and now it may be too late.
Thanks so much Sakina for pointing out some of the reasons why normalization of such destructive governance is taking place. The need for news outlets to make money is certainly one. And the president traditionally accorded "leeway" is one that has now gone over the top. And let's face it, the hurtful US treatment of both African Americans and Native Americans has been normalized until only relatively recently. And thanks for pointing out the willful denial of so many. I hope it's not too late.
We miss you but are glad you're taking some time to yourself--and what better place to do it?
I thought I was living in bizarre times when I protested the Vietnam War and watched the Watergate drama unfold. But this is much more serious. Vile villain that Nixon was, I believe he did have some concern for our country and its heritage. But the loathsome Trump cares only for himself. Everything else, including his family, can just be damned.
Enjoy the rest of your vacation Mike. Catch you next week. Prop 50 made it through another legal challenge. Good news for not just CA but the nation. 😎
Mike, I went to this rally at King County airport, which was pretty interesting, and we had about 300 people out there. Someone had alerted the King County Chief Executive, who has just been voted into office, and who started life here as an Ethiopian refugee. He came to the rally about halfway through, and spoke briefly. Since then I've written to emails to King County Councilmembers requesting that they find ways to end the contracts for flights out of KC airport.
While I was at it, I decided to do a little research on the GEO Group. The GEO Group owns the Northwest Detention Center, which is located on the outskirts of Tacoma, WA, and is a main holding area for immigrants. This detention center has just been wracked with complaints over the years, including almost a hunger strike every year. One person wrote to a local resistance group that he had seen rat droppings in the food. Living in a Blue State, the NWDC is like having a bad case of acne on an otherwise lovely person.
So I did a search of the chief executive and came up with this: https://www.geogroup.com/geo-news/letter-from-the-ceo-james-david-donahue/ . Not only is this guy white, but the ENTIRE Board and executive management team are white men. I guess GEO Group killed off DEI before Trump even came up with that idea. It's interesting that on their Facebook page they give their industry as "financial", not "warehousing human beings".
I have this really creepy, terrible feeling about a company that is so heavy with white men at the top, and yet the so-called 'services' they're involved in are all about incarcerating brown and black men and women.
They must know they aren't liked, because there is no mailing address on their website, just a phone number. I purchased 3 shares (they're only at $17+/share) to watch and see what they send out to shareholders.
Who hires this POS company for its "expertise" in locking up people? Does the U.S. Dept of Prisons let the contracts? More research ahead!
Looking forward to your return, although Naiyra was very good.
Mike is right that the news media has normalized too much of Trump’s erratic and crazy behavior. We all have to be shouting from the rooftops how abnormal all of this is.

And so have I. Couldn't get Neil Young's song "Ohio" out of my mind.

Let's not help him set the trap. Non-violent resistance, please!!!
Yes about the trap
Posting from Le Château Signorile? Sweet! Might be smart to have a backup plan in case Trump and the Rethugs do start rounding up progressive voices.
We actually changed plans at last minute, to Paris, after the airspace over Caribbean had been shut down at time of VZ invasion.
This is being normalized in International Press? The world isn't raging at this Orange Mob Boss changing all the rules at his will? WTF?
I’m very afraid that left unchecked (as he had been so far) the orange menace will declare martial law and cancel the midterms.
I hope you’re enjoying your very well deserved vacation Michelangelo! I’m looking forward to the substack live!
Thanks Marylou. We should all worry but we'll discuss in the Substack live
Take some time to recharge and rest.. looking forward to your return.
On the way back now, a nice post holiday respite
