This is a really good assessment on how the rise of authoritarianism is spreading globally. From Elon Musk courting right-wing leaders and turning off Starlink to Trump's praise of Putin over the intelligence community. The media is prone to shiny objects due to their incentive structures. We shouldn't forget Trump's dealings in other hostile governments to build Trump estates and properties. An active and educated citizenry protects democracy and that has to be reinforced as we realize the perils of excessive privitization that makes people self-indulgent, fearful, and isolated from the public square.
I just shake my head with just how ridiculous and how much energy is being wasted on this orange bag of puss. I don't understand how Gaetz became the spokesperson for the entire MAGA wing of the GOP. And hopefully his grandstanding will be his demise!! The old adage is in full swing, "Be careful what you wish for"!! The majority of voters, who are educated, understand that we have to fund the Ukrainian effort otherwise, we will be drawn into this conflict and it will not stop at Ukraine, Putin will keep pushing to reclaim more and more.

Excellent piece! Concur with the comments on Trump and Gaetz. The ‘bow to Putin’ makes sense, as he gets ‘assistance’ for as long as the money flow is stymied. Hope it’s not too long. Also, a way to take attention from the Tish James situation. That IS a ‘domestic cut’ Trump cares about-hence he attended when he didn’t have to.

Another unsaid aspect to consider is Pedogaetz is loving the spotlight aimed at him for the moment because he is either hoping to boost his profile for a possible run for governor or getting ahead of the rumor of getting booted from the House. Not exactly surprised the gop wants a Russian victory, we've had a 4 year exposure to a wannabe dictator and we rejected him. The wapo this morning revealed the cravenness of corporate media by attempting to shoehorn a ludicrous notion of not utilizing the 14th amendment to keep trumbo the elephant off ballots next year. Not enough that the media ignores the calls to violence, but to not even pretend to care about democracy itself is the real damage unaddressed.
